Box 24536, Ethiopia *E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT Bamboo is an important source of income for rural livelihoods in Ethiopia and somewhere else. It is increasingly recognized as potential species for environmental protection and poverty reduction in many countries including Ethiopia. The study was conducted in Amhara Regional State, Awi Zone, where Yushania alpina dominated areas of Banja district. This finding aimed at to identify advanced propagation techniques that can be pertinent for large scale plantation of Yushania alpina. randomized complete block design with three replications was used. The vegetative propagation materials (treatments) were; rhizome with two nodes, rhizome with four nodes, rhizome with six nodes, rhizome without culm and rhizome with the whole culm (offset). A total of 240 offset planting materials were planted in the experimental station. Of which, sixteen planting material were used in each plot level. New shoot sprouting, and their height, root collar diameter and mortality rate data was collected. There was no statistical significant difference in mean number of new sprouted shoots of Yushinia alpina between the five treatments. While, there was significant difference between mean shoot height of rhizome with four nodes and rhizome without Culm (137.02b ± 22.94, 67.10a ± 17.97) at (p<0.05) respectively. -

EDINB. J. BOT. 51(2): 275–295 (1994) THE BAMBOOS OF NEPAL AND BHUTAN PART II: Arundinaria, Thamnocalamus , Borinda, and Yushania (Gramineae: Poaceae, Bambusoideae) C. M. A. S TAPLETON * This paper continues the systematic treatment of the bamboos of Nepal and Bhutan, covering four hardy temperate genera with semelauctant inflorescences and 3 stamens from the subtribe Arundinariinae Bentham. Arundinaria Michaux has leptomorph rhizomes, while Thamnocalamus Munro, Yushania Keng f., and the new genus Borinda have pachymorph rhizomes. The separation of these and related Sino-Himalayan genera is discussed. Sinarundinaria Nakai is treated as a synonym of Fargesia Franchet, a genus that is not known from the Himalayas. A new treatment of Himalayan Thamnocalamus species is given, including the description of two new subspecies of Thamnocalamus spathiflorus (Trin.) Munro, subsp . nepalensis and subsp . occidentalis, and one new variety, bhutanensis. T. aristatus is treated as a synonym of T. spathiflorus subsp. spathiflorus, and Fargesia crassinoda Yi is transferred and given new status as Thamnocalamus spathiflorus (Trin.) Munro var. crassinodus (Yi) Stapleton. Two new species of Borinda are described: B. chigar from West Nepal and B. emeryi from East Nepal. Six species of Fargesia from Tibet are transferred to Borinda, which thus comprises eight species. STATUS AND S EPARATION OF THE G ENERA Bamboos from the mountains of the Indian subcontinent and China with 3 stamens and terete culms were all placed in Arundinaria Michaux until late in the 19th century, when two genera for bamboos with spathate inflorescences were described. Munro (1868) described Thamnoca- lamus as a Himalayan genus with groups of one to four racemes at the tips of branchlets, each raceme being enclosed in a spathe. -

Bamboo has received increasing attention over the last two decades for its economic and environmental values. In Africa, Asia and Latin America, it is closely associated with indigenous culture and knowledge and is widely used for housing, forestry, agroforestry, agricultural activities and utensils. In countries undergoing economic development, traditional bamboo culture gradually disappears. However, industrial development of bamboo is offering a new opportunity to younger generations to retain and continue developing cultural traditions related to the cultivation, harvesting and use of bamboo. Ethiopia is one of the few countries in the world endowed with a vast bamboo resource base. The country has an estimated one million hectares of natural bamboo forest, 7% of the world total and 67% of the African total. There is large amount of bamboo distributed in both highland and lowland areas including areas not suitable for other plants. And also there is a new species ‘jiant bamboo’ that is cultivated under amhara agricultural research center. Currently these different bamboo species uses in the country as construction material, for making furniture, and as livestock fodder whereas, their mechanical properties are not characterized yet. Therefore in addition to these bamboo applications for advanced industrial development textile and other energy production all properties have to be characterized for researcher and users. To characterize, first the fiber is extracted with different extraction method. -

The community data used in our analysis were derived from the database of the National Vegetation Diversity Inventory and Mapping Project of Taiwan (NVDIMP), and environmental data were obtained from the WorldClim and NVDIMP databases. We used non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) to identify vegetation composition of Abies communities and the structural equation models (SEMs) were used to examine the complex relationships between environmental factors and vegetation composition. The results of ordination showed the most important factors determining species composition of Abies forests involved habitat rockiness, heat load index, warmth index and summer and winter. SEM results approved the warmth index and winter precipitation were the main drivers determining the latent variable—climate, which significantly affect the overstory composition of Abies communities. -

Received 22 November, 2017; Accepted 28 February, 2018 Bamboo is one of the world’s most important non-timber forest products (NTFPs) which have been advocated for poverty alleviation in many regions. However, in Ethiopia it is utilized below its potential due to lack of scientific knowledge and awareness on its management and utilization. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate the indigenous knowledge of highland bamboo management and utilization practices of local communities in Kokosa woreda. Five kebeles were purposively selected and 196 sample households (HHs) were selected randomly. Primary data was collected through face-to-face interview, direct observation, key informant interview and focus group discussion. The collected qualitative data was analyzed using simple descriptive statistics, mean and percentage values and standard error. The result of the study indicated that, local people have experience of developing bamboo stands using their indigenous knowledge on propagation techniques. Among the propagation techniques, bamboo offsetting (82%) was preferred most, where 89% of the source of bamboo offset was obtained from individual farmers. -

In modern molecular systematics, matrices of unordered multistate characters, r P such as DNA sequence alignments, are used for analysis with no further re-coding e r procedures nor any a priori determination of character polarity. Here we present 1001, a P simple freely available Python-based tool that helps re-code matrices of non-additive characters as different types of binary matrices. Despite to the historical basis, our analytical approach to DNA and protein data has never been properly investigated since the beginning of the molecular age. The polarized matrices produced by 1001 can be used as the proper inputs for Cladistic analysis, as well as used as inputs for future three-taxon permutations. The 1001 binary representations of molecular data (not necessary polarized) may also be used as inputs for different parametric software.
