The origin of the name Tait, Taite, Taitt, Taitte, Tate, Tatte, Tayt, Tayte, Teat, Teate, Teit, and Teite was a personal namae in Norway in the eleventh century. The Scots made a favorite of this ancient English name for both boys and girls. It is an Anglo-Saxon name meaning the cheerful; and Tatum is a variation simply meaning one of the Tates; the word Tate is Norweagian meaning younger or son of.

The family settled in England in the ninth century; the original Tates reported their holdings in Northumbria, the land north of the Humber River which was settled by the Scandinavian sea pirates, as reported to William the Conqueror and his agents when he checked all land titles in England.

The family was mentioned in deeds in Coventry as early as 1207. In the Church of St. Michiel in that city w~s a chantry founded by one of the name, called "Tate's Chantry."

JOHN TATE of Coventry held lands in the reign of Richard 11th. A descendent, Sir. Robert Tate, was Lord Mayor of London in 1488 and his bro. Sir John Tate of de Ia prey Abbey in 1496 of Northampton, Sir William Tate, a gt. gr. son of Sir John Tate, of de la prey Abbey, was a member of the British Parliament in 1592. Genealogists claim our family descended through this lineage, though I have found no documentary proof. NICHOLAS TATE, appeared in the records of Cambridgeshire, England as early as the year 1273; the most notable of the name was Sir. Henry Tate, trustee of the National Gallery, who presented to the British Nation the famous Tate collection and picture gallery. Now called the "Tate Gallery." ref. Diet. of Family Names of Briton, History of Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland by Burke, Vol. 11 p. 75, 488, Time Magazine Dec. 9, 1957.

Like many other names, our early scribes spelled it as the fancy moved them, frequently it was spelled Taite; my branch of the family spell the name Tait, Tate.

In 1635 JOHN TATE was in St. Andrews parish Va., owning land and slaves. Before 21 Ap~. 1656 one JOHN TATE of Charles City Co. Va. md. the widow of John Harrison and before 3 Feb•. 1665 one JOHN TATE of Westover Parish, was married to the relict of Capt. John .Wall; possibly the same person married one or both of the widows mentioned. On 20 Oct. JOHN TATE had a patent of 80 a.(acres) on No. side of Jamaes River in Charles City Va. He lived in the section of the upper James River where in 1676 Nathaniel Bacon, of Bacon's Rebellion, resided; John Tate joined Bacon in the ~truggle. Ref. '-- Timothy T. Tate, 1862- 1938

Timothy Tate was my grandfather. By the time I was old enough to know him he was already in his mid 60's with a white beard~ The Tate's did not come over on the Mayflower because the Mayflower did not stop at or near Williamsburg Virginia. The first Tates' in my family settled in York County, Virginia. York County covered a large area of Virginia. From present day Norfolk it extended northwest past Richmond to at least near Charlottesville. Later York County was divided and part became New Kent-County, later New Kent was divided and Hanover County was created, later Hanover Country was divided . and Louisa County was created. The'Tate family at first was located inYork County then New Kent County then Hanover County. Whether they moved or the county boundary was changed is unknown. However, there was definite move from Hanover County to ·Augusta county on the west side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, then to Russell County in south before turning south to and Tennessee. As if to say it's getting crowded, we have to move.

Grandfather was a typical frontiers' man, a hunter, craftsman of wood and farmer--enough to provide food for his family. Most of the farm work was accomplished by the children. GeneraUy the children attended school for three years, however the school terms were only about three months--after gathering the faU crops and before the severe winter started. Severe winter· meant that you could not get outdoors because you did not have shoes to wear.

Grandfathers' wood working amazed me. With home-made chisels, wooden maUet, a saw, and a hand planer, he would make the most perfect racks for the. bees to store their honey. Everything had mortise and tenon joints. He also made the bee hives, ax handles, sythe handies, etc. He also loved to work around the bees and never got a sting. Well, not until he had "Rheumatism", then he would catch bees and make them sting him on the affected joints. I never learned the results of his experiment. Grandfather-loved to hunt He always had some stories to teU about his hunting experiences. At times he would walk-several miles on Colony Road to visit his daughter Ethel and Chris Schild, near tbe Stage Coach Inn. After we ate the evening meal dad would teU my mother," I'D take grandfather to visit Ernest Stampfli for a glass of wine". Mother knew they would not be home till very late. A glass of wine was mucb better for his "Rheumatism" than the bee stings and he felt like reliving some of his experiences. His stories mostly related to bunting deer and bear during the winter. Trapping small game wasn't much fun but did provide food for the table. A story that I remember but cannot relate with the excitement and detail that he provided: One winter we had about 3 inches of snow on the ground and he decided to go hunting for deer. He explains where he went, how long he had hunted before he found fresh -deer tracks and explains tracking the deer until he found him.· The air was still and the deer had not been alerted to his presence. He quickly shot the deer and went-to cut his throat so the deer could bleed and be lighter to carry home. When grandfather arrived. at the deer, he laid down his gun to get his knife and the deer suddenly jumped op and began to ~ Grandfather was quick to ron also and was very close being the deer and could reach out and grab the tail. The tan being short and smooth grandfather could not hold on to the tail and pull himself forward to get a better hold on the deer. After a minute or so he realized that this would not work and he gave up the chase and returned to get his gun. Then tracking the deer in the snow be found the deer exhausted and easy to kill this time.

In the late 1920's and early 1930's there were very few radios and fewer that worked, no TV, no rockets to the moon or Mars. Thus, grandfather rated prime time around Gruetli. Grandfather died on October 5, 1938, and was buried in FaD Creek Cemetery. A lot of local history died with him. He was 7 years old when a bunch of "Foreigners" moved in and began to build a Swiss Colony on some of his father's hunting ground. The Tates understood these Swiss people as they were considered frontiers' people like the Tates bad been since they arrived in Virginia early in the 1600's. ~escendants of WdUam Tate

Notes for ROBERT TATE: There were several families of the name TATE in South West Vtrginia before the Revolution and some were related. (1) There was an early ROBERT TATE, in Washington Co. VA, who may have been the ancestor of the Col.Iohn, Robert and William Tate who settled in Washington Co. VA, in 1772. This Robert Tate estate was taxed in 1794, indicating that he had "passed on" prior to that date. Augusta Co. Vtrginia, was formed in 1738 and comprised a great part ofVrrginia. Botetourt Co. formed in 1772, Washington Co. in 1776 and Russell Co. formed in 1785, where they eventually found themselves living. Robert Tate, Sr. died prior to 1794, however his son Robert Tate, Ir. continued to be called Ir. In Nov. 1804, Russell Co. VA, a power of attorney was granted by Sarah Hanley to her friend Robert Davis, Robert Tate, Ir., and Aaron Tate. Robert Tate, Ir. was Aaron's father, thus it seems there were several generations of Robert Tates in the area. This early Robert Tate, Probably the sire of Col. John, Robert and WIlliam Tate. He married (1) Rum. She was born 1784 in Virginia. He married (2) ELIZABETH SMITH February 23, 1829. She was born August 08, 1807 in N.C., and died November 25, 1867.

Notes for MAJOR JAMES TATE: Major James Tate, born Abt. 1778, Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain on the Holston River, some 15 miles from Lebanon, Russell County Vrrginia, son of Robert and (Mary ) Tate. Here he grew up and married, however, it is thought he migrated to Waren Co. Tenn. before his father died in 1806. In 1806 he met with some ofhis brothers and others to petition for a New County where they lived, consequently in 1807 Warren Co. was organized. Jazmes and his brother Robert settled In a remote section of the County, on Taylor Creek, until after he married his 2nd wife, then he moved to the Mountains, in what later became Grundy County. He servced in the War of1812 and was promoted to Major of the Tenn. Militia, and was always afterward called Major. He married (1) (Ruth ) born 1784 in Virginia, however, they were divorced. It is said she returned to VA to her people. I think it unlikely she returned for good, since all of her children were in Tenn. The Fed. Census of 1850 listed Ruth Tate, b. 1784 in VA living with the Jeremiah Walker Family. Major James married February 23, 1829 (2) Elizabeth Smith born August 8, 1807 in N. C. she died November 25, 1867, burial Smith Chapel Cemetery. James WmM Tate stated that his mother died and was buried in West Tenn. Major James acquired some twenty thousand acres of land in Warren and Grundy Counties in Tenn. That he was the son of Robert and Mary Tate of Russell Co. VA is recited in a deed dated October 14, 1816, Russell Co. VA when the heirs of Robert Tate, deceased, met to dispose of certain land. and sold the land to their brother Joseph Tate. Mother Mary, who was also in Warren Co. Tenn. signed her dower to the son Joseph Tate who remained on the old plantation in Russem, VA Major james Tate executed a will. He died testate April 19, 1849 buried in Philadelphia cern. 13 miles south ofMcMimmville, Tenn. The will was contested, went to the Supreme Court ofTenn. The widow Elizabeth received most of the estate. However, all the children were named. Ref: Russell Co. Va Deed Bk 5, page 537; Grundy Co. Tenn.
