While an array of quantitative analyses for studying fine-scale habitat use and selection have been developed, such methods have rarely been applied to bat species, with most work focused at a broad scale or using qualitative methods. Insectivorous bat communities face major threats from habitat conversion, exploitation of natural resources, and the impending spread of white- nose syndrome. Hence, detailed knowledge of their habitat needs is critical for developing effective management plans. In North Dakota, little was known about local bat populations prior to 2009, with essentially no knowledge of habitat associations and preferences of bat species. The overall objective of this research was to survey habitats across North Dakota to document species occurrences within key ecological regions and to assess the influence of fine-scale habitat characteristics on community diversity and foraging patterns.

The farm stay is part of a growing trend in “agritourism” that involves family farmers using their land, food supply, and livestock to attract guests to the farm.1 For farm and ranch owners, offering a farm stay accommodation can generate a new stream of revenue. Many farmers and ranchers appear to be recognizing and capitalizing on this financial opportunity. While lagging behind many European countries, the U.S. now has a national non-profit trade association that connects potential guests to accredited farm stay operators through on online booking platform, the U.S. Farm Stay Association.2 The association currently has 121 accredited farm stay operators across the country and reports that there are about 1,500 additional working farms and ranches in the U.S. that offer lodging, a doubling since the association began in 2010.3 In 2018, there were approximately 57,000 listings on the popular Airbnb website that the company identified as “rural,” bringing in about $316 million to the “rural” hosts,4 and Airbnb added a more specific “farm stay” category to its listings a year ago.

    News Release ‐ For Immediate Release September 20, 2016 Contact: Michael Reeves (806) 775‐2338 [email protected] SDDOT Recommends Heartland Expressway and Theodore Roosevelt Expressway as Critical to Rural Freight Movement The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) closed a comment period on September 6, 2016 allowing state departments of transportation (DOTs) to make recommendations to the Undersecretary of Transportation for Policy on critical rural freight facilities and corridors that should be included in the National Multimodal Freight Network (NMFN). The NMFN looks to the future with the purpose of assisting states in directing resources, informing freight transportation planning, and assisting in prioritization of Federal investment. The Theodore Roosevelt Expressway Association, Ports‐to‐Plains Alliance and South Dakota Department of Transportation submitted comments urging USDOT to include the Heartland Expressway, the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway and the Ports‐to‐Plains Corridor in this Final National Multimodal Freight Network. The Theodore Roosevelt Expressway Association provided comment asking USDOT to “Consider inclusion of the congressionally designated High Priority Corridors on the National Highway System, Including the Heartland Expressway from Rapid City south to Nebraska and U.S. Highway 85 from the South Dakota/North Dakota state line to Interstate 90 at Spearfish, South Dakota, as a Critical Rural Freight Facility and Corridor (CRFFC).” Michael Reeves, President of the Ports‐Alliance,
