Robert J. Baer - Businessman Robert J. Baer, who founded Telecheck Inc., which became the world's largest check guarantee company, died TuesdaySep 17, 2002 in Honolulu. He was 89. Baer was born in Pittsburgh on Oct. 27, 1912. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and moved to Wisconsin, where he became president of Alemite Co., an auto parts distributor. In 1965, several Hawai'i businessmen approached Baer with the idea of a check verification system. They were having problems selling the idea and Baer told them he could do it. A year later, Baer moved to Hawai'i and helped found what would become Telecheck Services. The check verification idea spread quickly and Telecheck soon became a worldwide franchise. Carl Becker met the Baer family when he was a student at the East-West Center in 1971. Becker, who teaches medical bioethics at Kyoto University in Japan, said the Telecheck idea was all about helping local businesses. "In those days, a guy comes to Honolulu from the Mainland with a checkbook or credit card and he wants to buy something, and the local merchant wants to sell him something, but neither of them can prove that the credit is good or not," Becker said. "Bob thought, 'Gee, if we can get it so the merchant can sell to anybody he wants and the customer can buy anything he wants, we would have more business and more happy people.'" But work didn't consume Baer's life. He found time to participate in many community activities. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for more than 40 years, was a 32nd-degree Mason, served on the boards of the Hawai'i Public Libraries Foundation, Honolulu Symphony and John Howard Society of Honolulu, and was a supporter of the Salvation Army. In the late 1960s, Telecheck began a library program in O'ahu's prisons. Baer also served Thanksgiving dinners to the poor and passed out Christmas gifts to homeless children. "He felt that being an adult in the community meant that you owed the community thanks for all that your community had done for you," Becker said. "And the way that we adults repay our thanks to our communities is not just by paying taxes, but by actively volunteering to help the community where it needs help." Baer left Telecheck in 1983, but returned four years later as a consultant. In his retirement, he taught franchising at Hawai'i Pacific University. In 1991 he received an honorary doctorate from Louisiana State University. Baer is survived by sons, Ronald and Jeffery; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Borthwick Mortuary. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army of Honolulu. [Adv 19/9/2002]

Richard Baldwin - Richard H. "Manduke" Baldwin's office was a saddle most of the time, as he ran Haleakala Ranch from his horse, working with other cowboys, mending fences and branding young cattle, friends say. "I learned quite a bit from him," said Harold Amoral, a retired ranch foreman who was inducted this year into the state Paniolo Hall of Fame. "He was a hard-working cowboy." Baldwin, born Aug. 21, 1911, died on Christmas Day Dec 25, 2002. He was 91. Baldwin was the oldest son of Samuel Alexander and Kathrine Baldwin who managed Haleakala Ranch and the grandson of Henry P. Baldwin, one of the founders of Alexander & Baldwin. Inc. He was a sportsman in the 1950s, riding for Maui at polo matches at the Honolulu Stadium and participating in horse races at the old Maui Fairgrounds in Kahului. He became president of Haleakala Ranch in 1968 and turned over the reins to his eldest son Peter Baldwin in 1979. Baldwin, who attended Cornell University, also was known for being an innovator in the cattle industry, introducing clover and other grasses to hot pasture lands. He also brought Santa Gertrudis cattle from Texas and bred them with Herefords from to create a stock that could withstand hot weather. "He was always looking after the breeding herd," Amoral said. Big Island rancher Freddy Rice, who grew up on Maui, said he regarded Baldwin as one of the best cattlemen in the nation. "Everything he did, he did top notch. He was the last of an era," Rice said. Baldwin is also survived by his wife Harriet, other son Ben; daughter Katie Achaval; sister Mary Abby Willey; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Maui Animal Aloha Center, P.O. Box 880278, Pukalani 96768. Donations may also be left during a public memorial service at 1 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Haleakala Ranch polo field. Ceremonies will be held to dedicate the field in his name. [SB 28/12/2002]

RICHARD H. “MANDUKE” BALDWIN - The Haleakala Ranch polo arena will be renamed at a memorial service Sunday for Richard H. "Manduke" Baldwin, a prominent sportsman and innovative rancher who died at home in Makawao on Christmas Day Dec 25, 2002 at age 91. "He was a great cowboy and a great sportsman, between fishing, hunting and bird dog field trials. Of course, polo was his greatest," said his son Peter Baldwin of Maui. Baldwin was born Aug. 21, 1911, the oldest son of Samuel Alexander and Kathrine Baldwin, and grandson of Henry P. Baldwin, one of the founders of Alexander & Baldwin, which pioneered the sugar industry on Maui. Samuel Baldwin was manager of Haleakala Ranch for most of his life and president for the last three years, before he died in 1950. Manduke Baldwin took over as president in 1968, but began his career there in the 1930s. As a student, he spent his summers on the ranch, often heading over to 'Ulupalakua Ranch to rope wild cattle with legendary Hawaiian cowboy Ikua Purdy. A hard-charging polo player, Baldwin excelled at the sport both at Cornell University and on the famed Maui team of the 1950s that also featured Gordon von Tempsky and Oskie Rice. Peter Baldwin, who also attended Cornell and was a nationally recognized polo player in his own right, said one of his dad's favorites polo stories was about the time then-Maj. George S. Patton attended a big party at 'Ulupalakua Ranch after playing a match on Maui in the 1930s. Patton, who would become a legend for his exploits as a World War II general, entertained the guests by standing on his head while drinking a glass of whiskey upside- down. Manduke Baldwin and his wife, Harriet "Haku" Baldwin, also were regular competitors in the Kona Billfish Tournament, and they hosted parties at the Haleakala Ranch hunting lodge each year at the beginning of pheasant hunting season. Big Island rancher Freddy Rice grew up on Maui and was Baldwin's godson. He said Baldwin was a mentor and a second father to him, and was instrumental in helping Rice get established in the ranching industry. "Besides being an aggressive sportsman — he was proficient in golf, tennis, polo, fishing and hunting — he was a winner. He gave me that," Rice said. "On the ranching side, he was one of the best pasture men we ever had here. He taught me that we were not really raising cattle, we were raising grass, and cattle were the harvesting machines. "It made a major difference in how you run your ranch. The philosophy was that you manage your cattle for the sake of your pasture." Baldwin was knowledgeable about all the grasses and clovers growing on Maui, and introduced new species to increase forage production for cattle. He also was a shrewd cattle breeder, importing the first Santa Gertrudis cattle from Texas, as well as Brahman bulls from Arizona and British-bred Herefords. "He was a hands-on manager who was on a horse all the time with the men," said Peter Baldwin, who became ranch president in 1979, then retired in 2001. The public memorial service begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at the polo field off Haleakala Highway. There will be entertainment, a barbecue and pa'u riders. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Maui Animal Aloha Center, P.O. Box 880278, Pukalani, HI 96768. Along with his wife and son Peter, Baldwin is survived by another son, Ben, and a daughter, Katie Achaval; his sister Mary Abby Willey; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great- great grandchildren. Richard Behnke - Broker-dealer Richard Behnke, who was the epitome of the patient investor, always believed time was on his side if he picked the right stock. What he wasn't counting on was his body giving out early. Behnke, the owner of Abel-Behnke Corp. Securities and one of seven participants in the Star-Bulletin's 2002 survey of best investment ideas, died of a heart attack May 28, 2002 at his Honolulu office. He was 62. Business partner Wade Richardson, who at one time was licensed with Behnke, said his former associate was a disciplined value investor. "He would take positions in a company and he would wait," Richardson said Thursday. "One of the significant ones he recommended was Security National Financial Corp. It stayed at $2.50 to $3 for about six years and today it closed at $6.44 ($6.80 on Friday). "This is the type of investment that Richard would dig out. Sometimes an investor will look at the short horizon. Richard would look long term. If he thought the value was there, he would hold the stock and, in the end, he was usually right. Most of the clients who have been with him had been with him many, many years. They completely trusted his research and his recommendations. Very few stocks that he recommended would not do well." Behnke's top performer in the Star-Bulletin survey was Security National Financial, a life insurer, death care provider and mortgage company that posted the best total return (169.4 percent) of any of the stocks or funds picked by the seven-member panel of experts. That pick helped him record a six-month average total return of 29.9 percent that beat out the other survey participants. Among his other picks, World Wide Ltd., a Cayman Island-based real estate investment trust, was up 13.6 percent and life insurer Southern Security Life Insurance Co. was ahead 5.3 percent. Showing losses were biometrics company Drexler Technology Corp. (down 9.1 percent) and his one speculative pick, computer memory maker Simtek Corp., off 38.1 percent. Behnke, who used to be partnered with Stanley Taylor in Behnke- Taylor Corp., changed the name of the company to Abel-Behnke Corp. Securities in 1973 after Taylor died. There never was any such person named Abel, however. Behnke chose the name, according to his wife, Gayle, so that he could be listed first alphabetically in the phone book among brokerages. The approximate 400 clients that Behnke served are due to get notices telling them that their accounts will be transferred to fiduciary Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles. Behnke, who graduated from Centre College of Kentucky in 1961, served in the Navy from 1962 to 1964 and in 1965 worked as a narcotics agent in New York under the U.S. Treasury Department. He received an MBA from University of Hawaii in December 1969. He is survived by his wife, Gayle, with whom he had been married 31 years, and one son, Christopher. Services already have been held. Clayton W. Benham, "the heart and soul of the ILH," died yesterday afternoon April 29, 2002 at The Queen's Medical Center. He was 81. Benham had been the only executive secretary of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu since it was re-structured as a private-high school athletic association in 1970. He also headed the league for several years before that, when Honolulu's public high schools also belonged to the ILH. "He was the heart and soul of the ILH," retired Punahou School athletic director Ralph Martinson said yesterday. "He gave very effective leadership as a liaison between principals and athletic directors. He was meticulous in his job, and apart from that, a good guy." Benham retired from teaching in 1982 after 28 years at the Kamehameha Schools, but continued to be active in high school sports administration and as a tennis player until he was stricken Friday morning with a brain abscess. His wife took him to Queen's and he slipped into a coma Friday night. Tony Sellitto, retiring this year as basketball coach and athletic director at Hawai'i Pacific University, said, "Clay was my best friend, one of the finest men and a true advocate of the students at the schools in Hawai'i." "What a loss to the league and to the state," Punahou athletic director Tom Holden said. Sellitto and Benham had planned to leave tonight for Saturday's Kentucky Derby, which Benham had never seen in person. Benham was a former Territorial tennis champion and played four times a week. He played three sets last Thursday, a friend said. Frank Mauz, a sportswriter in the '70s and '80s and long-time observer of high school sports, said Benham "had to make some tough decisions as ILH secretary. What I admired was that he always had the best interest of the student- athlete at heart." Mauz and others also remembered Benham's ability to project warmth, and make people feel better about themselves. "Whenever we met at a game, it was like seeing an old friend," Mauz said. Benham was born on Oct. 5, 1920 in Kahuku, where his father was a sugar plantation store manager. He was an outstanding athlete in football, baseball and tennis at Kamehameha Schools and graduated in 1940. He played football and tennis at San Mateo, Calif., junior college for a year. As war clouds were gathering over the , he returned to Hawai'i and went to work for the Honolulu Police Department Benham left HPD to enroll at the University of Denver in 1950 and was the No. 1 player on the tennis team. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1953 and was working on his master's at Stanford when he was offered a job teaching and coaching at Kamehameha in 1954. He was head football coach at Kamehameha from 1954-57 and supervisor of physical education and athletics from 1958-73. He was also tennis coach and taught social studies and physical education. Blane Gaison, current co-athletic director at Kamehameha, recalled that Benham was one of his teachers there. Survivors include Benham's wife, Marian; brothers Roy and Howard, all of Honolulu; sisters Elouise of Honolulu and Eula of Denver; daughter, Betsy, of Half Moon Bay, Calif., and her children, Renee, Maile and Camille. James Grant Benton, one of the founders of the groundbreaking Booga Booga comedy troupe that gave life to a generation of performers who found humor in local-style characters and situations, died yesterday May 28, 2002 of an apparent heart attack at Castle Medical Center. He was 53. His wife, Deborah, catering manager of the Hawai'i Convention Center, said she was up early on her way to work when she found Benton standing in their bedroom appearing disoriented. She summoned an ambulance from their Ka'a'awa home at about 4:30 a.m. and he was taken to Castle, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. Benton had a history of heart problems, Deborah Benton said.. "I'm actually in a state of shock," said Edward Ka'ahea. Ka'ahea is now the lone surviving member of the original Booga Booga trio, which also included Rap Reiplinger, who died in January 1984. Ka'ahea and Benton had been preparing for a June 28 comedy performance, "Lolo No Ka 'Oi," at the Sheraton Waikiki. "The show was going to be called 'The Viagra Years: Aging Gracefully in Paradise,' " Ka'ahea said. Ka'ahea, a deejay at KONG radio on Kaua'i and a program director of the Hawaiian station there, was uncertain of the immediate future of Booga Booga. "I know Bruddah Jimmy is having a good time with Rap," said Ka'ahea. "For me, it's a personal loss because Jimmy was a very caring and giving human being, one of those guys who'd give you the shirt off his back. Literally, he's done that for me. But for Hawai'i, it's a major loss of a real talent." Benton's work in recent years included small parts in movies and on TV series shot in Hawai'i, as well as radio and TV spots. But his biggest fans remember him best for his work with the Booga Booga trio, playing Waikiki clubs in the '70s and '80s, cutting albums and appearing on comedy specials on local TV. "James did it all," said Arnold Hiura, a longtime friend and business partner of Benton who shared offices with him at the Mo'ili'ili Blind Fish Tank. Benton, Ka'ahea and Reiplinger organized Booga Booga in 1975 and established themselves as a different kind of group, creating a new kind of sketch comedy that developed characters, situations and dialogue, not just jokes and punch lines. Their material, delivered in dead-on dialects ranging from plantation pidgin to tourist haole, played off local idiosyncrasies, shared experiences and ethnic differences but never crossed into racial or crude humor. Over the years, members included Andy Bumatai, Dave Lancaster and Ray Bumatai. But the public always revered the original trio, with Reiplinger and Benton creating some of the favorite routines. From Las Vegas, actor and stand-up comedian Pat Morita said Benton was the most level-headed of all the original Booga troupers. "I first met James when he emceed the shows at the Comedy Corner (in Honolulu, during the late 1970s); subsequently, we became tight friends," said Morita. "One of the most rewarding, albeit bizarre experience with him, was several years back, when Ken Thompson (an agent) was managing Rap, and these guys were hoping to get back together after a split. James was sort of at the forefront of the fever to get them back together; Ed was non-aggressive, Rap was on another . I played a small part of this reunion when they all came and stayed with me for a day and a half, when I had a place at 1350 Ala Moana. "I shall miss him; he was wonderfully funny and a great friend." Benton was born Jan. 15, 1949, and graduated from McKinley High School in 1967. He attended the University of Hawai'i in Manoa between 1971 and 1973 but never finished his higher education. In entertainment circles, he had a stellar career in a variety of disciplines outside of the Booga circle. In theater, he wrote and adapted a pidgin- English version of 's "Twelfth Night," which was dubbed "Twelf Nite O 'Wateva!" initially produced in 1974 and still remembered as a pioneering piece of theater. As a performer, he had a leading role in a landmark Hawai'i company production of the rock opera "Hair," which journeyed to Las Vegas in the mid-'70s. At the height of set-in-Hawai'i television series, Benton became a seasoned bit player on "Hawaii Five-O," "Magnum P.I.," "Hawaiian Heat," "Baywatch" and "The Byrds of Paradise." For "Byrds," he served as a script consultant, overseeing dialogue requiring local lingo. He also had a number of movie roles, including the popular produced-in-Hawai'i "Picture Bride," and the teen surf film "Blue Crush" set to be released this summer. Television commercials also gave him wide visibility, most notably a Columbia Inn restaurant spot, where he portrayed a gamut of diners. Benton was troubled for years by dependency on alcohol and drugs, "but that was BD — before Deborah," said his widow. "I met James when I first booked Booga Booga, and he was always good fun, crazy, like a roller coaster," she said. "He had become such a nice grandfather, happy with his dogs, eating heartily. He was off alcohol for two years, and not doing drugs." "He finally got the demons off his back," said Ann Asakura, head of TEMARI, the Center for Asian and Pacific Arts with whom Benton had done a series of promotions. "He was not any moke with a toilet bowl mouth; he was really terrific, especially since he quit drinking." "When he started up with AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), he really changed his life," said Hiura. "He was sober and clean and very focused, with energy level way up high." Ka'ahea said that Benton occasionally wondered about his mortality, but acknowledged the healing power and nurturing of his comedy. "We often talked about how comedy can be a unifying force," Ka'ahea said. "(Benton) cared about Hawai'i and worried about getting old; that's why we customized our upcoming show for us two old farts." Services are pending, but Deborah Benton said the comedian, who loved the ocean, wanted to be cremated, with his ashes scattered at sea. Besides Benton's wife and granddaughter, survivors include a son, Kui Benton; his mother, Ann Wilms; two brothers, John Benton and Ralph Wilms; and a sister, Kathy Ahlo. [Adv 29/5/2002]

Booth took many groups, including those from Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club and Scout troops, up and down Hawai'i mountains. Booth, who was born Sept. 23, 1912, in Portland, Ore., caught a boat to Hawai'i in 1939 after he identified a criminal on a wanted poster in a Seattle Post Office, said his wife, Mary. Borge "Ben" Breining, an energy conservation pioneer, died on May 17, 2002 in Honolulu after suffering a stroke several days earlier. He was 77. Breining started his own company, American Technology, in the early 1970s, then spearheaded energy conservation in Hawaii years before it became an important local and national issue, said developer Rick Rainalter of Kamuela Associates LLC, a longtime friend and business associate Breining was "one of the most brilliant mechanical engineers I have ever met, and it's a very difficult area to get good results. His end product was better than most," Rainalter said. In the mid-1970s, Breining designed, built and installed Hawaii's first major residential solar hot water heating system atop the Windward Passage condominium in Kailua, still one of Hawaii's largest, said Rainalter, who helped build the project. Breining also was the first in Hawaii to implement the shared-savings concept with the Pavilion condominium in Waikiki in 1975 -- where his fee was based on the money saved due to installation of an energy conservation system, Rainalter added. "Ben was definitely on the cutting edge of energy conservation in our industry's infancy," said Cully Judd, chairman of Inter-Island Solar Supply. "Back then, when Ben couldn't buy a piece of equipment off the shelf, he just designed and built it himself, like the solar panels for Windward Passage," Judd said. Breining was an avid sailor and belonged to the Kaneohe Yacht Club, Waikiki Yacht Club and Hawaii Yacht Club at various times. He was the official measurer who established International Offshore Racing ratings for racing yachts in Hawaii for many years, Rainalter said. "He was an all-around wonderful person. He had a great sense of humor. He was very responsible, very independent; a loyal and good friend," he said. Breining came to Hawaii in the 1964 to manage the Honolulu branch of Honeywell, the international mechanical engineering firm. His ashes will be scattered offshore from the Hawaii Yacht Club at 10 a.m. Saturday. A memorial service and reception will follow at 11 a.m. at the club. Breining is survived by two daughters, Lisa Breining West and Christine Breining Aday, and four grandchildren. [SB 29/5/2002]

Sam Bren was not a man to mince words. He called a new shopping center in Waikiki "Fort Kalakaua." He referred to Washington Place, when inhabited by a Democratic governor, as "the donkey mansion." A transplanted Missourian who could lay claim to the title of "mayor of Waikiki," longtime Neighborhood Board Chairman Bren died Friday July 12, 2002at the age of 85. He was the model of a good citizen, a man who not only talked about problems but worked hard to find solutions, said Makakilo community activist Maeda Timson. Bren could turn a phrase, and when he tattooed a politician, the needle was sharp. When the Democratic leadership in the state Senate was enlarged, Bren wanted to know "Why do we need four donkey-jockeys to ride herd on such a small band of jackasses?" And when Councilman John Henry Felix dared to criticize an official Bren backed, Bren said Felix's "investments in mortuaries give him the cold heart to ignore the living." Born in Kansas City on May 5, 1917, Bren completed high school and went to work for a coffee company in Los Angeles. His experience prompted him to form his own firm, Bren Associates, a coffee machine service. He fell in love with Waikiki during a 1957 visit, and 19 years later decided to move to Hawai'i. Once here, Bren began fighting for that old Waikiki he loved, but eventually also endorsed "change" and "growth" such as the expansion of the Hilton Hawaiian Village complex. In his 26 years in the Islands, Bren spent 18 of them on the Waikiki Neighborhood Board. He battled for reform of condominium laws, and served on city task forces for Waikiki, fireworks, pedicabs and crime. Although he was diagnosed with cancer a year and a half ago, Bren accepted his treatment and kept up his civic work, arguing as recently as April for bus rapid transit for the city. "When he got interested in something he went after it like a bulldog," said his wife, Olive. Bren had hoped, Olive said, to live until Aug. 29, their 50th wedding anniversary. "But it wasn't to be, and what difference does the date make after all?" she said. "The important thing is we knew each other then." Bren is also survived by a sister, Hazel Levey of Los Angeles. Services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the Waikiki Elks Club, followed by sprinkling of ashes at sea. [Adv 15/7/2002]

John F. "Jack" Burby, former deputy editorial page editor for the Los Angeles Times who started his journalism career in Hawaii, has died. He was 77. Burby died of lung and brain cancer at his Avila Beach home on Saturday, according to the Times. Burby joined the Times as an editorial writer in 1978 and served as deputy editor of the editorial pages through much of the 1980s. In 1989 he returned to editorial writing full time. He left the paper in the early 1990s and worked briefly for the New York Times, also writing editorials, before retiring. Burby "was an unusual newspaperman, in that he had the mind of an engineer," said Anthony Day, who was the Los Angeles Times' editorial page editor for 18 years. "He loved technology, and that love of technology helped him on missile defense issues, including Star Wars," Day said. Born in Benton Harbor, Mich., Burby was an Army Air Corps pilot during World War II. After his discharge in 1947, Burby took a reporting job with United Press in Hawaii and attended the University of Hawaii. He left the wire service in 1951 and joined the Honolulu Advertiser, working there until he came to the mainland in 1956 for a job at the San Francisco Chronicle. He worked as press secretary to California Gov. Edmund G. "Pat" Brown in the 1960s. He also worked briefly as special assistant to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Alan Boyd. He then worked as an editor at the National Journal and then as president of Potomac Policy Inc., a federal policy consulting firm that focused on energy and environmental issues. Edward "Eddie" Bush - 'Ukulele player extraordinaire Edward "Eddie" Bush died Tuesday Sep 10, 2002 at age 67, just as his musical star had begun to shine brightly again. Bush, who had had a quintuple bypass a few years ago, died at The Queen's Medical Center after suffering a massive heart attack at his Hawai'i Kai home. Bush, who always kept a "day job" in the banking and credit fields, played music as a passion, not a trade, said guitarist Winston Tan, one of his latest musical partners. Tan said the two gave a performance together on Saturday at Pearlridge Center, then had dinner to discuss plans for a new CD they had just completed to be sold through the Honolulu Elks Lodge. Now, Tan said, he hopes to produce the CD for public release with proceeds from sales to go to Bush's family. "It is a beautiful album, and we had all the songs, 'Over the Rainbow,' 's 'Ave Maria,' 'Kamehameha Waltz,' a solo by Eddie of 'Rhapsody in Blue' "Eddie Bush is a legend, and he stretched that instrument, the 'ukulele, to its limits," Tan said. "He did every style of music." Bush's wife of 37 years, Donna, said Bush had been working at maintaining his health so he could continue performing at Michel's and New Otani Hotel. In his prime, Bush was a headliner at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Room by night, and a banker by day. Bush graduated from St. Louis School, and then from Dayton University in St. Louis, Ohio. During his business career, he worked at Bank of Hawaii, THC Financial, Servco and First Hawaiian Bank until his retirement four years ago. In 1969, he produced a successful album called "A Man and His Ukulele," and attracted the attention of a talent scout who got him a national television appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson the following year. Bush said at the time he wanted to use the appearance to promote Hawai'i's signature instrument. "I want to show that (the 'ukulele) can be used as a featured instrument, not only as background or as a novelty," he said. In addition to his wife, Bush is survived by his sisters, Edna Ellis, Winona Naweli and Pauline Tagesell; daughter, Keli; son, Edward Kevin; and four grandchildren. Plans are pending for memorial services 10 a.m. Sept. 21 at The Elks Lodge, followed by scattering of ashes at sea. [Adv 12/9/2002]

O.A. "Ozzie" Bushnell, who combined a scientific background, love of history and literary flair to produce some of Hawai'i's finest and most popular books, died at home Aug. 21, 2002 after a long illness. He was 89. A microbiologist and medical historian, Bushnell began writing novels while still teaching at the University of Hawai'i's School of Medicine. His early works, including "Ka'a'awa" and "Moloka'i," paved the way for several generations of Island writers to tell their own stories, using their own voices. "He was something of a heroic figure," said Joseph Stanton, an English professor at the University of Hawai'i. "He had a passion for science, writing, reading and history. He's a great example of someone writing in a workmanlike way, endeavoring to promote understanding through literature." Born in Kaka'ako to an Italian-Portuguese father and a Norwegian mother, Bushnell studied science at the University of Hawai'i and received his postgraduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin. After returning home to teach, Bushnell began writing fiction in his spare time at his Manoa home, working out of a converted 8-foot-square piano crate stuffed with 2,000 books. His writings showed a deep passion for all things Hawaiian and a deep sadness for what Hawai'i has lost over the years. "I couldn't live anywhere else. I'm in love with this place," he said in a 1979 interview. "I remember being 15; I came out of a slum area of town and looked up at the mountains. I saw Tantalus and I said, 'Auwe,' and damn near cried." Bushnell's first novel, "The Return of Lono," won the Atlantic Monthly's fiction award in 1956 and was published in New York. It appeared at a time when almost all Hawai'i literature was written by authors such as Jack London, and James Michener, who were not local. Over the next 25 years, Bushnell published four more novels, each dealing with aspects of Hawai'i history. "Moloka'i" tells the story of Kalaupapa, Hawai'i's quarantined outpost for leprosy patients; "Ka'a'awa" is about changing O'ahu life in the 1850s, when many Native Hawaiians were dying of diseases brought by white men; "Stone of Kannon" and its sequel "Water of Life" are about the first Japanese contract laborers, who came to Hawai'i in 1868. Several of Hawai'i's best writers today say Bushnell inspired them. "He challenged the younger writers of various ethnicities to come forward and tell their stories," Stanton said. "He was very insistent that people with other backgrounds should be the ones writing about Hawai'i." Bushnell, a stickler for proper English in his university classes, also was a strong advocate for the use of pidgin English. "I'm all in favor of using it," he once said. "People who make a fuss about pidgin are missing the point and also betraying their racist attitudes. Each of us should speak both standard English and pidgin." Bushnell, who retired from UH after 24 years in 1970, saved his most deeply felt work for last. His "Gifts of Civilization: Germs and Genocide in Hawaii," published in 1993, is a masterful combination of his skills and interests: microbiology, Hawaiian history and literary craftsmanship. The book, which Bushnell worked on for more than 50 years, is the definitive study of how Native Hawaiians, living in isolation from the rest of the world for centuries, were susceptible to and nearly wiped out by a host of diseases — including tuberculosis, smallpox, Hansen's disease and venereal diseases — that outsiders carried when they started arriving in the Islands. Bushnell won the Hawai'i Literary Arts Council's Award for Literature in 1974. The council cited him for "contributions to the art of language in which (he) brought life to fact and reality to fiction, and to both, love for Hawai'i." Bushnell is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Andrew, of Kapa'a, Kaua'i, and Philip, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a daughter, Mahealani, of Honolulu; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. No services are planned, at his wish. The family suggests gifts in his name to the University of Hawai'i Foundation, earmarked for the UH Medical School. [Adv 24/8/2002]
