• Debt As an Instrument of Colonial Domination: How France Appropriated Tunisia
Debt as an Instrument of Colonial Domination: How France Appropriated Tunisia By Eric Toussaint Region: Middle East & North Africa Global Research, June 16, 2016 Theme: Global Economy, History CADTM 13 June 2016 Tunisia’s fate at the hands of France in the second half of the 19th century serves as a good example of debt used as an instrument of dominating and alienating a state’s sovereignty. In 1881, France conquered Tunisia and turned it into a protectorate. Until then, Tunisia, known as the Regency of Tunis was a province of the Ottoman Empir |1|, enjoying significant autonomy under a Bey. Tunisia did not borrow from abroad until 1863 Public debt did not exist until the end of Bey Mustapha’s reign in 1837. Agricultural production ensured the country’s food sovereignty. His successor, Bey Ahmed (ruler from 1837 to 1855) launched a public works programme focusing on the establishment of a standing army, the purchase of military equipment and the construction of lavish residences. He also founded several factories (including the linen factory of Tebourba) on the European model. These accomplishments could not compare with the success of Muhammad Ali, the Egyptian monarch 2| | who matched the European powers with his aggression |3|. However, these two courses of action had a common factor: the absence of external borrowing during the first part of the 19th century. The investments were mobilized from the country’s internal resources. The public works programme turned out to be a fiasco because it did not stimulate the strength and development of the local producers.

A personal biography of `Iyäd is provided in chapter one, covering his education and his intellectual and religious influences. Chapter two provides an economic, political and religious overview of the period during which `Iyäd was active, as a means of placing his work in a historical context. Chapter three offers a critical study of the Tanbihät, defining its content and style, and a commenting on its formative influences, in particular with regard to the Mudawwanah of Sahnün, which the Tanbihat seeks to abridge, as well as listing the commentaries this work has spurned.

Asbāb al-Nuzūl By: Alī ibn Ahmad al-Wāhidī TRANSLATED BY Mokrane Guezzou Edited and with a brief Introduction by Yousef Meri The Complete Text © 2008 Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought Amman, Jordan Series Editor’s Introduction and Foreword The Great Tafsirs of the Holy Qur’an project (www.altafsir.com) of the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, Amman, Jordan (www.aalalbayt.org) is pleased to make available for the first time ever in English translation one of the most significant works in the branch of the Qur’anic sciences (‘ulum al-Qur’an) known as “asbab al-nuzul” — the occasions, reasons, and contexts for the Revelation of the Holy Qur’an. The present work by ‘Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi, (d. 468/1075) Asbab al-Nuzul is the earliest and best-known representative work of this genre. For most of the Qur’an, the exact occasions and contexts of Revelation were not preserved in the historical record. However, for those that have been, the original context of the revelation of a particular verse of the Qur’an will aid the reader in better understanding the historical context of the revelation and the issues that confronted the Prophet Muhammad and the nascent Muslim community. Such issues as the relations between Muhammad and the Jews and Christians are highlighted herein. The reader will also discover details about the relationship of Muhammad to various individuals such as from among the Companions and Followers, groups and tribes such as the Aws and Khazraj, and also to the Ummah which give insight into his prophetic mission, his personal qualities and attributes — such as his exemplary humility and generosity, his relationship to his enemies, his conduct of war, how he dealt with false allegations of infidelity against his favourite wife ‘A’ishah, to cite but a few examples.

  • Event Transcript — Examining Tunisia's Political Crisis
    — Event Transcript — Examining Tunisia’s Political Crisis Thursday, August 5, 2021 10:00 am – 11:00 am ET // 15:00 – 16:00 GMT+1 Watch the event here. Stephen McInerney [0:29] Hello, and welcome everyone. I'm Steve McInerney. I'm the Executive Director of POMED, the Project on Middle East Democracy. Thank you for joining us for today's event, "Examining the Political Crisis Underway in Tunisia." And thank you for bearing with us as we're starting a few minutes late due to some technical difficulties. Central to the mission of our organization, POMED, is examining how genuine democracies can develop in the Middle East and North Africa. For the past decade, one of the top priority countries for our work has been Tunisia. As you all know, since 2011, Tunisia was the only country to remain on the precarious path of democratization beyond a couple of years. But as anyone who's followed Tunisia closely has seen, there have been deeply troubling signs for Tunisian democracy in recent years. Our last event on Tunisia was on January 14 of this year, the 10th anniversary of its revolution. The panelists at that event mentioned remembrances of the exciting days of the end of 2010 and early 2011 and some of the remarkable progress made since. But also they noted the many failures of Tunisia's political elites to meet the public's expectations over the past decade, especially regarding corruption and economic and social justice. All of these problems have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has hit Tunisia hard in successive waves, the most severe wave hitting the beleaguered population over the past couple of months.

The Greeks in Tunisia during the 19th century. Social adaptability, commercial enterprise and political flexibility. Antonios Chaldeos1 Abstract The article discusses several aspects of the Greek community of Tunis during the 19th century. Initially, we will approach the anthropogeography of the Greek community focused on the characteristics of Greek migration in Tunisia. We will study a few demographic factors and will query why Greeks from certain geographical areas moved to Tunisia. Then we will refer to the main economic activities of the Greeks settled in Tunisia, including the operation of retail stores commerce and sponge fishery. We will define the framework through which, Greeks managed to get significant economic power and become Bey’s main partners. Therefore, we will question the political status of the Greeks located in Tunisia during the 19th century, analyzing their tactics and the reasons for their way of acting. Finally, we will examine the case of a few Greeks who arrived in Tunisia as enslaved in the first quarter of 19th century and gradually undertook import offices in the administrative mechanism of Tunisia government, supporting in parallel the Greek community’s interest. The Greek community of Tunisia in the 19th century Political and economic conditions encouraged Greek immigration to North Africa in the early nineteenth century. The Napoleonic Wars and mainly the blockade of a substantial part of the European continent favored those who turned to risky grain trade. From the end of the 18th century the opening of fertile steppes and plains of the "New Russia,” as well as the settlement policy of the Tsars, was a 1 Antonios Chaldeos is a Ph.
