Fueled by its energetic playlists that some nights change on the fly, plus a tireless desire to please their fans, the fourmember Livoniabased music machine has evolved into one of the hottest weekend cover bands in metro Detroit — or, in the case of the riverfront festival, smack dab in the heart of Detroit. "We've been playing a long time and we've played before some big crowds, but that night in Detroit was amazing," said Michael Smith, the band's lead guitarist and founder. "After each song, there was a roar from the crowd, like 'AAAHHH!'. It was unbelievable." Roz Kaveney A Sense of the Ending: Schrödinger's Angel This essay will be included in Stacey Abbott's Reading Angel: The TV Spinoff with a Soul, to be published by I. B. Tauris and appears here with the permission of the author, the editor, and the publisher. Go here to order the book from Amazon. (1) Joss Whedon has often stated that each year of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned to end in such a way that, were the show not renewed, the finale would act as an apt summation of the series so far. This was obviously truer of some years than others – generally speaking, the odd-numbered years were far more clearly possible endings than the even ones, offering definitive closure of a phase in Buffy’s career rather than a slingshot into another phase. Both Season Five and Season Seven were particularly planned as artistically satisfying conclusions, albeit with very different messages – Season Five arguing that Buffy’s situation can only be relieved by her heroic death, Season Seven allowing her to share, and thus entirely alleviate, slayerhood. Being the Chosen One is a fatal burden; being one of the Chosen Several Thousand is something a young woman might live with. (2) It has never been the case that endings in Angel were so clear-cut and each year culminated in a slingshot ending, an attention-grabber that kept viewers interested by allowing them to speculate on where things were going. Season One ended with the revelation that Angel might, at some stage, expect redemption and rehumanization – the Shanshu of the souled vampire – as the reward for his labours, and with the resurrection of his vampiric sire and lover, Darla, by the law firm of Wolfram & Hart and its demonic masters (‘To Shanshu in LA’, 1022).

Her concerns seemed less arcane, her presentation more appealingly worked out; as Guy Scarpetta put it in he Nouvel Observateur (May 19, 1980), she now intro- duced into "theoretical rigor an effective measure of seduction." Actually, no sudden change has taken place: the features that are noticeable in Powers of Horror were already in evidence in several earlier essays, some of which have been translated in Desire in Language (Columbia University Press, 1980).

  • Laine Waiting to Reap His Training Rewards
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/laine-waiting-to-reap-his-training- rewards-453510973.html Laine waiting to reap his training rewards By: Mike Sawatzky PITTSBURGH — Patrik Laine believes his scoring chances are up from last season, but he's still waiting for the benefits of his off-season training to kick in. The 19-year-old Jets right-winger eschewed more extensive on-ice workouts in the off-season for extra time in the weight room and added about five kilograms to his 6-5 frame. His life in the NHL, he insisted, hasn't changed much after a phenomenal 36-goal rookie campaign. "No, I would say the same as last year," Laine said following Winnipeg's Thursday morning skate at PPG Paints Arena, where the Jets were preparing to play the Penguins. "Obviously, I'm in better shape than last year but I don't feel like it yet. But I think it's gonna be better every game... "I tried to be better overall. I didn't have one specific thing I wanted to improve." There should be no concerns about his ability to score. In seven games so far in 2017-18, Laine has four goals and six points while shooting at a 16 per cent clip, which is down from 17.6 per cent in his rookie season. His ice time is also down slightly, from 17:55 to the current rate of 17:28 playing on a line with centre Bryan Lilttle and left-winger Nikolaj Ehlers. His main concern now? "Skating feels kinda heavy," Laine said.

  • Interviewing the Embodiment of Political Evil
Pain as Pleasure: Tough Girls’ Love in Fan Fiction Malin Isaksson Abstract Fan fiction writers use an existing fictional universe to develop scenarios and characters in creative ways within the logic of the original universe. In this chapter, I examine the representations of the erotics of pain in two fan- produced, so-called femslash texts describing romantic and sexual relationships between the two vampire slayers Buffy and Faith from Joss Whedon’s TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In the ‘adult’ Buffy/Faith femslash analysed here, the authors describe pain as inextricably linked to sexual pleasure and intimacy, especially in BDSM sex scenes. Drawing on intertextual links to the TV series, such as the preternatural resilience of Slayer bodies which can take extreme amounts of pain, the fanfic writers create graphic descriptions of safe, sane and consensual BDSM as key elements in Buffy and Faith’s relationship. I argue that such representations are transgressive in that they break the rules of how sexualities can be represented in the prime-time TV series the two female characters are borrowed from. Furthermore, they subvert stereotypical ideas about female desire and sexual behaviour as ‘passive’ or ‘vanilla’. The potential for transgression may explain fan writers’ attraction to Buffy/Faith femslash centring on BDSM relations as well as readers’ interest in these stories. Key Words: Sexualized pain, pornography, BDSM, intertextuality, Buffy/Faith femslash, fan fiction, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. ***** 1. Buffy, Faith and fan fiction Fan fictions (fanfics) are texts written by fans about characters from an existing fictional universe, such as the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
