    ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARKS AND MONUMENTS OF CENTRAL ARIZONA Tonto National Monument – Upper Cliff Dwelling NPS PHOTO INTRODUCTION The purpose of this website is to provide some information about the prehistory of the Southwest with a focus on two of this regions prehistoric cultures: the Hohokam and Salado and their historic homelands. Native Americans have occupied what is now Arizona for thousands of years. There is no other place in the United States that contains such monumental remnants of prehistoric cultures as the Southwest desert of North America. The largest Native American reservation (majority of the Navajo Nation) and the second largest, the Tohono O’odham Nation, are located in Arizona. The purpose of these pages are also to give visitors to the Apache Junction, Arizona area a glimpse of the well-preserved ancient dwellings and history of the indigenous people whose civilizations occupied this region. These people flourished here in the Southwest Sonoran Desert centuries ago, prior to the first Spanish explorers arriving here in Arizona around the mid-late 15th century. Expecting to find great riches, the Spaniards encountered communities of Native Americans. The Southwest is described as extending from Durango, Mexico, to Durango, Colorado, and from Las Vegas, New Mexico, to Las Vegas, Nevada. The results of comments received during the scoping period are summarized at the end of Chapter 1 of the CT EIS; these comments were used to shape the CT EIS analysis and are incorporated as appropriate and to the extent practicable within the CT EIS. The Draft CT EIS was distributed to interested stakeholders for comment in February 1999. Public hearings were conducted within the 45-day comment period following issuance of the draft document and the publication of the Notice of Availability in the Federal Register (38 FR 9438) on February 26, 1999.

Ro' The Gran Chichimeca is a North American area extending from the Tropic of Cancer to the south to the thirty-eighth parallel in the north, thus embracing northern Mexico and the American Southwest. The rise of the great mesoamerican civilizations to the south of the Gran Chichimeca and the consequent pressure of trade resulted in a northward diffusion of cultural traits, many of which reached the American Southwest. The advantages of various possible routes over which meso- american cultural traits might have been passed are discussed and five specific traits are examined. In the American Southwest, espec- ially, these traits are but dimly perceived and are not accorded the recognition which they merit. These traits have been selected for their unique character and their patent visibility. The character of these five traits and their significance is demonstrated.     The Mu:kwitsi/Hopi (Fremont) Abandonment and Numic Immigrants into Nine Mile Canyon as Depicted in the Rock Art. • The many of the rock art panels found in Nine Mile Canyon, support the theories of Shaul (2014), Ortman (2012) and Simms (2008) who argue that the Fremont were a mix of Uto-Aztecan (Pre-Hopi) and Tanoan (Pre-Jemez). • Part 1 presents supporting evidence with depictions of the plumed serpent Awanyu (Tewa) associated with flash floods, Hopi style garden plots, Hopi mythic figures, and Hopi clan symbols. • Part 2, petroglyphs depicting Numic immigrants with their large burden baskets and seed-beating technology, a strategy more adaptive to the drought conditions during the later Fremont period. • Part 3, late period petroglyph panels show battles between Fremont/Hopi and Paiute warriors, each identified by “directionality”, hock-leg moccasins, and culturally distinct hair styles. Fremont Rock Art Study Area Fremont in General; • Archeologists have identified several kinds of artifacts that are distinctive to the Fremont. • A singular style of basketry, called one-rod-and-bundle, incorporated willow, yucca, milkweed and other native fibers. • Pottery, mostly gray wares, had smooth, polished surfaces or corrugated designs pinched into the clay. • Unlike the fiber sandals of their contemporaries, the Ancestral Puebloan or Anasazi, the Fremont made moccasins from the lower-leg hide of large animals, such as deer, bighorn sheep or bison.     Sears Point Petroglyph Site, Dateland, Arizona If you appreciate indigenous native “rock art” or petroglyphs, this site is fascinating. Thousands of petroglyphs can be seen on the volcanic basalt outcrops that lie next to the Gila River, which except during rain events, is dry. The area is believed to have been utilized for thousands of years, more so from A.D. 500 until the 1800s. Many archaeological remains left by prehistoric peoples are visible, but the most predominant are the petroglyphs. Petroglyphs are generally difficult to date, so archaeologists have limited certain ways of knowing their exact age. Other features at the site include sleeping circles, geoglyphs, trails, rock alignments, and a historic canal. Due to its proximity to the Gila River, the area has a long history of use as a major traveling route by Spanish explorers (Juan Bautista De Anza National Historic Trail alignment), missionaries, and people heading for California including the Butterfield Overland Mail route and the Mormon Battalion. The Sears Point Archaeological District is a large and complex site extending along the terraces on the south side of the Gila River some 75 miles east of Yuma, Arizona. The area is characterized by steep volcanic cliffs that have over 2000 panels of petroglyphs on vertical faces of basalt mesas and on boulders. An additional 87 archaeological features including geoglyphs, rock piles, rings, alignments, cleared areas, extensive trails, historic features from the 1800s, and evidence of temporary habitation. Geoglyphs on the mesa have been described as having solstice features. In virtually every published study of geoglyphs of the region, especially those associated with numerous ground figures such as rock piles or cairns, rock rings, cleared areas, rock alignments, trails, etc., the conclusion reached is that the collective ground figures are cosmological landmarks for the occupants of the region.

    September 2003 Volume 23 Number 9 Monthly newsletter of URARA, the Utah Rock Art Research Association President’s Message Fall is coming and temperatures in Price have been cooler—thank goodness! My grass is greener and the pansies near the patio are beginning to green up again, after shriveling and nearly disappearing. I hope it’s a sign we’ve turned the corner on a record-hot summer. It has been a very busy month for URARA members and there are plenty of fun activities left for the year. The big news from last month is a very successful picnic at Joes Valley Reservoir in central Utah. It was cool enough in the evening that many members donned jackets for dinner. Imagine that! And it rained, too, for a short while. The success of the picnic for the 30 or so people there enjoying some great rock art must be assigned to Steve Manning who led the group to some wonderful rock art sites in Ferron Canyon on Saturday, and Muddy Creek on Sunday. Many of us have been to the canyon several times, but we had no idea there is so much terrific rock art there. We debated the authenticity of the Birch Creek mammoths (I believe they are not authentic) and discovered one anthropomorph that towers over four feet tall. We even waded Ferron Creek without drowning anyone. It was a fine day, topped off with terrific food shared by everyone there. A second thank you goes to Barbara Green. Barbara cooked some great Sloppy Joes, much better than cold cuts, I think.
