REGION OVERVIEW The Brisbane (C) - North Region comprises the 74 statistical local areas of Albion, Alderley, Anstead, Ascot, Ashgrove, Aspley, Bald Hills, Banyo, Bardon, Bellbowrie, Boondall, Bowen Hills, Bracken Ridge, Bridgeman Downs, Brighton, Brookfield (incl. Brisbane Forest Park), Carseldine, Chapel Hill, Chermside, Chermside West, City-Inner, City-Remainder, Clayfield, Deagon, Enoggera, Everton Park, Ferny Grove, Fig Tree Pocket, Fortitude Valley, Geebung, Grange, Hamilton, Hendra, Herston, Indooroopilly, Karana Downs-Lake Manchester, Kedron, Kelvin Grove, Kenmore, Kenmore Hills, Keperra, Lutwyche, McDowall, Milton, Mitchelton, Moggill, Moreton Island, New Farm, Newmarket, Newstead, Northgate, Nudgee, Nundah, Paddington, Pinjarra Hills, Pinkenba-Eagle Farm, Pullenvale, Red Hill, Sandgate, Spring Hill, St Lucia, Stafford, Stafford Heights, Taigum-Fitzgibbon, Taringa, The Gap, Toowong, Upper Kedron, Virginia, Wavell Heights, Wilston, Windsor, Wooloowin and Zillmere. It has a total area of 848.5 km2, or 0.0 per cent of the total area of the state. The region has an average daily temperature range of 14.8 oC to 24.4 oC and on average Brisbane (C) - North Region receives approximately 1,163 mm of rainfall each year. Demography As at 30 June 2010, the estimated resident population of Brisbane (C) - North Region was 491,262 persons, or 10.9 per cent of the state's population. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 5,170 persons in Brisbane (C) - North Region who stated they were of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin, or 1.2 per cent of the total population. At the time of the 2006 Census, in Brisbane (C) - North Region, 47.1 per cent of persons were living (usually residing) at a different address five years earlier. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 20.5 per cent of persons in Brisbane (C) - North Region who stated they were born overseas. In Brisbane (C) - North Region, 4.4 per cent of the 2006 usual resident population were in the most disadvantaged quintile and 46.3 per cent of the population of Brisbane (C) - North Region were in the least disadvantaged quintile. Society In 2009, 52.7 per cent of students attending a school in Brisbane (C) - North Region attended a government school and 47.3 per cent attended a non-government school. At the time of the 2006 Census, in Brisbane (C) - North Region, there were 59.1 per cent of persons aged 15 years and over with a post-school qualification. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 3.3 per cent of persons in need of assistance with a profound or severe disability in Brisbane (C) - North Region. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 19.7 per cent of persons aged 15 years and over who were volunteers in the Brisbane (C) - North Region. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 125,168 persons aged 15 years and over in the Brisbane (C) - North Region who stated their gross individual weekly income was less than $400 (34.0 per cent of all persons aged 15 years and over). As at 30 June 2009 in Brisbane (C) - North Region, there were 86 aged-care service providers, with a total of 5,072 places in operation. Economic Performance The smoothed unemployment rate for Brisbane (C) - North Region in the December quarter 2010 was 4.0 per cent. At the time of the 2006 Census, Health Care and Social Assistance was the largest industry of employment for Brisbane (C) - North Region usual residents, with 11.7 per cent of the region's employed labour force. Industry and Development In the 12 months ending 31 March 2011, there were 3,228 dwelling units in new residential buildings approved in Brisbane (C) - North Region, which represented a total of $947.2 million. The total value of agricultural production in the Brisbane (C) - North Region in 2005–06 was $4.1 million, 0.0 per Queensland Regional Profiles, Brisbane (C) - North Region 28 June 2011 Page 3 cent of the total value of agricultural production in Queensland. In 2008–09, there were 55,643 businesses in Brisbane (C) - North Region, 13.3 per cent of all Queensland businesses. At the time of the 2006 Census, there were 69.9 per cent of all occupied private dwellings in the region with an internet connection. Queensland Regional Profiles, Brisbane (C) - North Region 28 June 2011 Page 4 ESTIMATED RESIDENT POPULATION As at 30 June 2010, the estimated resident population of Brisbane (C) - North Region was 491,262 persons, 10.9 per cent of the state's population. The population of Brisbane (C) - North Region increased by 6,504 persons between 30 June 2009 and 2010 (see following table). This was a 7.3 per cent share of the state's population growth over this period. The region recorded a population growth rate of 1.3 per cent between 30 June 2009 and 2010 (Queensland, 2.0 per cent). Within the region, the largest increase in population occurred in Bracken Ridge Statistical Local Area (SLA), up by 307 persons in the year to 30 June 2010, accounting for 4.7 per cent of all growth in Brisbane (C) - North Region. The fastest growing statistical local area between 2009 and 2010 was Moggill SLA (8.7 per cent), followed by Upper Kedron SLA (5.3 per cent) and Banyo SLA (3.0 per cent).
