Matt Struble won the last 6 of 7 races to run away with first place in the A-class class regatta for the young and ageless “Mom, I won the regatta!” A That was 13-year-old Maura Cannon shouting across the boat yard after being shown the final results of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s annual Fourth of July Regatta Sunday. The slight youngster from Balboa YC led a BYC assault on the Naples classes with first place in Sabot C2s, the first victory of her budding career. David Wood and Brad Hilliard, also BYC, won Sabot B and Sabot C1, respectively, racing on the inside bay, while outside on the ocean course ABYC’s Mike Wood drove dad Ron’s to first place as Matt Struble of San Diego won the last six A-Class catamaran races, discarding his worst finish: a second place in the weekend’s first race. Also notable: Peter Sangmeister, 11, of the Long Beach YC won 8 of 9 Sabot C3 class races. It was his first regatta. Then there was Barney Flam, ageless at 89 and still driving his No. 9 Cal 20 called Rigormortis, perhaps recalling when he started at the age of Cannon or Sangmeister. Conditions Sunday stepped up from Saturday. Ocean competitors were greeted by whitecaps at noon as a southwest breeze built from 10 to the mid-teens that got the A-Cats’ hulls flying. “The boat’s really working well,” said Struble, who is pointing Matthew Fairbanks sails past Brad Hilliard toward next month’s A-Cat Nationals at ABYC. There were only 38 boats, the event’s fewest in several years, but on the bright side that was 37Jeff more Merrill thanphoto will open the America’s Cup competition (one) at San Francisco Monday. Of course, the entry fees were a bit higher there. ...continued page 6 inside sav e the date Commodore’s Compass ...... 2 Club ABYC ...... August 9 Vice Verses ...... 2 A Cat North Americans ...... on Popeil Are you all ready for a very busy end to summer? I hope so, because we have a lot R going on at the club. August and September are when we traditionally hold class championship regattas. This year we are hosting the A-Cat North American’s, as well as the and Mercury 18 Class championships. If you would like a front row seat on the water, we have plenty of space on Patience, or the whalers. You can sign up on our club website event pages, or see our Fleet Captain Latham Bell, and he can hook you up. Our most popular summer races, the Lido/Sabot twilights, as well as LBYC and SLBYC’s Wednesday and Thursday beer can races continue thru September. Come down to race or spectate, and don’t miss the galley dinners. On Friday’s the bar is open with light dinner, the Nirvana II’s are sailing, and we are providing world class sunsets on the bay. But wait, there’s more! It’s also time for the Catalina cruise, the BBQ series, and the pine block regatta. Of course it’s not time to end summer and send the kids back to school before the big Labor Day Regatta and party. We also have off the water activities including bridge, ladies nights, and an Angels baseball outing. Events are being added all the time. Some events are created by the Social Advisory Committee, but others are from the members and fleets. Bring us your ideas for club activities, and we will work to make them happen. Have a fantastic summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the club. Cheers, Mike viceverses

hat a great month of sailing! From the end of June and throughout July we’ve been doing nothing but sailing and special events at the club. W At the end of June, we had three days of Long Beach Race Week. THANK YOU to all the volunteers that made that event such a huge success. ABYC volunteers came through and showed their stuff on Alpha, Bravo and Charlie courses, plus threw a fantastic party on Friday night! Social Advisory outdid themselves with great decorations handing from the flag pole over the patio and Naples Rib Joint provided a great spread! Kelly and his staff put their best efforts into bar and food service. There were more than 90 members involved as volunteers. Many thanks go to Jon Robinson that served as co-chair for the event with Randy Beers of LBYC. Planning is already underway for next year’s event….lets see if we can produce another great event. Fourth of July Regatta was a small but great event. Steve and I finally got to go racing! Lars Rosenblad and the fleet put together a stellar event. It was Lars first time as regatta chair and he ran a well organized event. To make things even better, we had beautiful warm weather, strong breeze and a great BBQ on Saturday night. Competition in the Cal 20 Fleet was strong. We had three women skippers giving the guys a run for their money! I’m looking forward to Labor Day Regatta! BBQ Series on July 13, 2013 had a very light turn-out of only Lido 14s. But, what we lacked in participation we made up for with BIG fun. It was a great afternoon with strong breeze. Race Committee ran two long bay races with the finish between the ABYC flag pole and the restaurant across the channel. BBQ was a nice finish to a great day with many shared salads and wine! Next BBQ race days are July 27(new member appreciation party) and August 10. If you decide not to race, come down and enjoy the BBQ on the patio on August 10. Regatta was by the Sr. Sabot and fleets. (100% participation by the Finn fleet.) We had three fleets racing outside. PRO Glenn Selvin put together a strong series of races in challenging conditions. He did such a good job that we adopted him as part of the Ellis Family! Who knew we could have light air and drizzle in the middle of July? Many thanks to Jane McNaboe, Sabot Fleet Captain and Jeff McDermaid, BOD Liaison, for all your hard work on the regatta. What’s going on with the Yard and Building? We’ll try not to replay a broken record but now that we’re working on a repaving plan for the yard we’re stepping up our patrols. Sometime in the not too distant future, we will be moving everything out of the yard to complete the repairs. PLEASE come down and clean up around your boats and make sure you tires and trailers are in good working order. Also, there is under-utilized space in the yard. Demand for Sabot racks is lower than the space available, so we are studying if it is possible to remove some of the racks to open space for larger boats. I’m open to suggestions – but plan to be out there with my measuring tape to see what we can do.

We’ve had a lot of questions about launching boats off the beach during the basin construction. The Board has discussed several options, one of which seems to be to buy plastic lattice to lay down for traction on the sand. The plastic lattice is light weight and can be easily moved on to the beach and off back into the yard when not in use. Please let us know if you have any designs for potential sand dollies that are cheap and easy to construct. This might help move Lidos, Finns and Lasers from the yard onto the beach without exposing trailers to ill effects of sand and salt water. We have a few months to get organized, so please let your Board Members know of any ideas. Jennifer Kuritz rearview f you blink you are going to miss out on everything that is going on at ABYC and July has been no exception. It kicked off with the firemen’s fundraiser and fireworks show. If you attended I last year and thought that was great, well this year was even better. The food was outstanding, there were T-shirts being sold, and the firework show was almost 20 minutes long! It is always nice to come down to the club and support a great cause; we are all looking forward to next year! The Friday Night happy hours are a great way to close out your week and come down to kick off your weekend and enjoy the beautiful view. The 4th of July regatta had great wind and close competition in the fleets. Following the races was a good BBQ chicken dinner out on the patio, and you guessed it…great weather to go with it! Junior twilights are in full swing…Wet Wednesdays with the Cal 20’s are always competitive with the Lidos ripping it up on Thursday’s, and the Nirvana’s rounding out the week of sailing. Then once again, it rolls right back into another Friday Happy Hour.

BBQ series and the Etchells are sailing on Saturdays, and the Senior Sabots are roll tacking on Sunday. The first build your own omelet was a solid turn out, and you cannot beat the view and weather, while enjoying some great home made omelets. Try to make the next one you won’t regret it. We also had the Multihull regatta, Junior Beach Clean up, another week of Wet Wednesday’s, Thursday’s, and Nirvana’s on Friday to follow up with BBQ series #2. We also have the new members appreciation BBQ coming up, and to close out the month of July, we have the ABYC Beach Event. Did I mention that if you blink you will miss out on the events that are going on at ABYC? We have tons of sailing and social events planned for the upcoming months, so keep a close eye on the website, Facebook, and the weekly reader email blast as the events get posted regularly. Here is what is coming up for August, so hang on and enjoy: We are hosting the Santana 20 Class championship Thursday 8/1 thru Sunday 8/4, and on August 2nd we are having our First ABYC Angel Baseball and tail gate party which should be fun! Don’t forget Wet Wednesdays and Thursday Twilight’s, and on August 10th is the International A Cat North American Championship (8/10 – 8/16) along with the Etchells Fleet race and BBQ series #3. We also have a General Membership meeting, followed with the Catalina Cruise-so fun! Then there is the Mercury 18 Class Championship and Senior Sabots on Sunday 8/25. After that it is one of our biggest regattas of the year, Labor Day which is always a good regatta and fun BBQ (check out the flyer on the website). By now you have officially received the Basin 5 letter from your Commodore and Vice Commodore explaining the Basin 5 marina upgrade. ABYC is very fortunate for the opportunity of the city of Long Beach to rebuild Basin 5 and upgrade it to world-class standards. This is also the proper time to seize the opportunity to upgrade our launch ramp, hoist wings, yard, and parking lot. We have assembled multiple committees to manage and execute these projects. Your flag officers and Board of Directors will be working double time to keep every member informed on the progress and what is going on with the new basin upgrade. This is a VERY exciting time for all members of ABYC, as we will have a new facility when it is complete, just in time to show off for the Special Olympics in 2015. So keep an eye out for emails (weekly reader) and other notifications that will be keeping every member informed! Remember ABYC is THE Place to BE… Chuck Clay

ummer is flying by! So far we have participated in over eight regattas and there’s still more to come! Back in the end of June, ABYC sent our Sabot Steams down to Summer Gold Cup in Newport and did very well. There were 40 C3s and our team took second, fourth and sixth place with Bobby Little, Nathan Sih, and Ryan Elsharhawy, respectively. The first day was on the light air side but the second day was so breezy that they had to cancel the races early! Bobby Little has submitted his own article recounting his experience. This past week, we have had three regattas here alone! ABYC hosted the Dick Sweet Team Racing Regatta and our team placed 4th overall after the first day of racing! There will be two more events to complete the series; hopefully our team will bring home the gold! On Wednesday we hosted the Sabot II North regatta with almost 50 sabots participating. It was a very breezy day with lots of capsizes but we managed to get 5 races in and our team did very well against the hard competition from the Newport area yacht clubs. Axel Stordahl was our top placing junior in 4th place overall! Sammy Elsharhawy placed 5th and Brett Peoples and Sarah Warren rounded out the top 10 placing 9th and 10th respectively. To cap off the week we ended with the C-Fleet Championships. ABYC dominated the bay like usual taking the top 3 positions. Rising star, Axel Stordahl, won the regatta with Hailey Thompson placing second, and Max Rosenblad taking third! Sammy Elsharhawy, Nathan Sih and Shelby Stordahl also placed in the top ten at fifth, seventh, and tenth respectively. All of our sailors performed extremely well given the conditions, they should all be very proud of themselves. Coming up we have Beach to Bay followed by Sabot Nationals down in Mission Bay! Wish our team luck as they head out to bring home more silver! See you on the water. Matt Beck

y gold cup experience I was nervous and excited while driving to the regatta and when I got there I was thinking to myself I can win M this but it will not be easy. When I arrived at Newport harbor yacht club I got my boat off the trailer, rigged my boat ate a couple of donuts and then I went to find some of my friends who were also rigging their boats and I decided to lend a helping hand, after I helped them rig their boats I went to get more donuts and hot chocolate then found my way to my meeting and then my mom started slabbering me with sunscreen and then I got my class ribbon and put it on my boom and before u could put my boat in the water my mom gave me a kiss and then I went gliding through the water. We did three races that day and in every race I was whippin some Newport booty. My goal that day was to try to get top five In every race I feel that I had completed my goal finishing top five in every race but one. The conditions in Newport were as predicted bein very very light wind. When I got back to the dock I was unhappy that I got a sixth place and I took it out on my mommy and then I went home and wrote in my “log” aka diary then I went straight to bed and got my beauty sleep for day two. The next morning I got more donuts, rigged my boat, put it in the water and went to the skippers meeting and realized it was windier than yesterday then I looked at my scores from the previous day I was in fifth place then I knew I had a chance to win it all. And my new goal was to finish in all top five finishes to be able to win the regatta. There were boats crashing right and left and the first race I had an amazing start and I finished in third place. The second race at the starting line it had became very people started to capsize there were five seconds left until the start inside of those five seconds a girl crashed into me and swamped me and I ended up getting a fairly good start upwind it was pretty hectic and I rounded the and sailed downwind everyone was capsizing and I was looking around while also bailing my boat I knew that if I gybed I would capsize I rounded the mark and I had rounded in second place and then I saw the kid in first place starting to capsize and I had obtained first place and then I went all the way upwind and finished in first place before we went to the lido isle docks and my coach had to tow me in the rest of the way and after that I ended back up at nhyc. I was so excited to see the results, i went To the front desk to see When the c3 scores would be posted. A few minutes later the scores had been posted and I saw that I ended up in second place. Then I waited for the trophy presentation and I was so excited and proud of my accomplishments. Then my dad took a picture of me with my trophy . Then my coach told me I was done with c3’s and I can become a c2 and that’s is my gold cup experience. Bobby Little

Rachel Ellis photo his past weekend, I participated in the High Sierra Regatta for the first time. I was excited (and a little relieved) to be invited (I wasn’t exactly looking forward to racing in Newport instead). I had wanted to sail my Uncle Jay’s and family Tfriend Steve’s new , although when I was called to be their third, I must admit I was hesitant. I knew absolutely nothing about the boat, but signed up anyway. After our 7-hour car-ride, we arrived in Huntington Lake Thursday evening. The lake is somewhere between Sequoia and Yosemite National Park, and it’s absolutely beautiful. I was extremely thankful that we stayed in a condo and didn’t camp like most of the others. The weekend counted towards two different regattas, the Viper PCC’s and the High Sierra Regatta. The regatta proved to be very challenging, and the sailing was completely different than anything I’ve ever done before. I got to control trim upwind, take the spinnaker pole in/out at the windward/leeward marks, and stand on the bow to adjust heal while planning downwind. But by far the most difficult task of the weekend was dealing with the aspects of “lake sailing”—drastic puffs, shifts, and completely different amounts of winds in different areas of the lake. Although I must admit that freshwater sailing was very refreshing. We did three races Friday, two Saturday, and one last one on Sunday. We ended up with a 3-1-1-1- 1-2. The new experience was the most rewarding part of the weekend, by far. I am so grateful to have learned something completely new and different during this regatta, and hope to sail the boat again sometime soon! Emily Golison

Thank you to those who participated in our July 20 clean up, including Alan and Brett Peoples, Ryan and Sean Ayale and Nathan ASih. We had hoped for more, but perhaps the summer is already too busy. If you haven’t helped with one of our beach clean ups, then you should try one. It’s fun to visit with friends, while you do something to help the community. It counts for two community service hours for middle or high school students so please keep a look out for future dates. ABYC juniors like to have fun too! This year ABYC juniors will host a Bonfire at Bolsa Chica on August 16. We will be there all day until about 9:00pm, so please join us. Look for the signup sheet outside Matt’s office in August. The Junior Board will be accepting applications for next year during August, for the ABYC year from October, 2013- September, 2014. The Junior Board works to help ABYC with certain events, while teaching our juniors leadership skills. Applications are available on ABYC website. You must be an active member of ABYC in good standing, at least 12 years old and entering 8th-12th grades. Applications are due by August 30. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions. The regatta is one of ABYC’s four traditional holiday sailfests, along with the spring’s Memorial Day Regatta and the Labor Day and Turkey Day (Thanksgiving) regattas yet to come. Cannon and Sangmeister can’t wait. “I just sailed the best I could,” Cannon said. Was she nervous? “I was singing to myself a lot,” she said. Mike Wood said, “It was a really beautiful day in Long Beach … started out light and got to 15 or 18. Everybody was on their game.” Jennifer Kuritz, four points back in second place, won the only two races the Woods didn’t and had no finish worse than third. Two of the other boats also had female helms Maura Cannon (l.) of Balboa YC won last 3 races to claim Sabot C2 people: Patty Nash and Cathy Black-Smith. class — her first regatta victory Complete results Rich Roberts

llman Sails Long Beach Race Week brought broken hearts to some but a happy daze to others in a wild windup to the West Coast’s largest keelboat regatta Sunday, co-hosted by the adjacent Long Beach and Alamitos Bay Yacht Clubs U Daniel Woolery felt the experience both ways, and four of the other 14 class winners came from behind to prevail on the third and final day—Jay Golison of ABYC in Viper 640s, David Hood of LBYC in Catalina 37s, Bob Lane of LBYC on his Medicine Man in Random Leg 1 and Tony Festa of California YC in Open 5.70s. Woolery, owner-skipper of Soozal, a King 40 from the Dana Point YC, had overcome a 10-point disqualification suffered by his team and six other boats in PHRF-2 class for rounding the wrong windward mark on Day 1 but battled back into first place by winning all three races Saturday. Then, as he lined up for the first of two final races Sunday his boat was T- boned in the portside transom by Tango, a J/133 from Balboa YC coming downwind from the start line. The damage was so severe that both boats retired, leaving Rob Sjostedt’s Flyer, an RP37 from Coronado YC, to win the last two races and, temporarily, the class. But wait. As the awards ceremony got underway, since Soozal wasn’t at fault, race officials awarded redress based on the average of its first five races (1- 10-1-1-1) and subtracted 2.8 points from his two 8-point scores for the final two races that he didn’t sail. The result: a final tally of 19.6 points, four-tenths ahead of Flyer. “When we were hit I just thought it was over,” Woolery said. “I was just happy that we had sailed well as a team. Most of the guys have been with me the last four years.” Other good news was that a crew member from each boat sustained injuries that were not as serious as in initially feared. Among the rest of the 156 boats on three race courses, Golison and his crew on their Viper 640 It’s All Good were honored as one-design boat of the week for seizing the 25-boat class victory by one point from a fellow ABYC member. Kevin Taugher had led the first two days until going 7-3 on Sunday as Golison scored 1-4 to hold off Taugher and Viper veteran Glyn Locke from the UK’s Isle of Wight by a single point. Golison thus qualified to compete in the EFG Bank Pan American Viper Championships in Miami next year. Hood’s comeback rivaled Woolery’s. He finished a last-place 10th in the first race Friday but won four of the last five races to edge fellow LBYC co-skippers Scott Mehler and Greg Morse by two points. Chuck Clay’s Team ABYC, the defending champion, took a four-point lead into the last day but slipped to third overall with an 8-5 windup. Some sudden changes in the weather may have been a factor. As a warm, sunny day slipped away into a misty overcast and a momentary sprinkle, an uncommon southeast wind held at 16 knots but turned uncertainly shifty. Hood said, “Chuck’s a great competitor, [but] at the last leeward mark we decided to go right into what seemed to be smoother water, and the wind looked better on the right.” Clay and the other key rivals went left to cover one another as Hood and his team won the race and the title. Lane, tuning up for another Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii in the next few days, also came from behind to win the last two Random Leg 1 races 18.5 nautical miles around the harbor Saturday and Sunday, edging Victor Wild’s Bud, a TP52 from San Diego YC, by one point. Thomas Wheatley’s Gator from ABYC, competing in Random Leg 2 class, was honored as PHRF boat of the week for its two-point win in tight competition. The LBYC Blue team of Lane’s Medicine Man, Steve Crooke’s J/109 Sugar and Scott Mehler/Greg Morse C/37 won the Yacht Club Challenge for combined efforts. Bill Durant’s Farr 40 Viva la Vida collected the Golison & Kent Family Trophy with his wife Pam and son Dustin on board. Tony Festa, after a struggling at 2-4-8, pulled off a similar comeback among a dozen Open 5.70s with a 1-1-2-1 string over the last two days. Rich Roberts

Sailed in J80s, teams ranging from Taiwan, Singapore,China & your very own lone rangers from the US duked it out for the top prize. With team Captain Shane Young at the helm, we’re proud to say that your team won every race & brought home the gold for our school, community and country! It was no small feat getting to China and we would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters in helping us get across the Pacific. With the support, we were able to raise over $12,000 for our trip overseas & our team is very, very thankful for all the support that we’ve received. Special thanks to the US China Association & the Long Beach Qingdao Sister City Association for giving us a tremendous amount of support and motivation in going to China. We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors! Thank you! We sent five guys to China. On the helm, of course, Shane Young, on main was Mark Ryan, trimming jib/ spin was John Hill, on the bow was Nick Santos & doing pit was Tyler Webb. After a 13 hour flight, we landed in Shanghai & spent a day exploring the massive city & taking in our first experiences of China. The next day, we flew into Xiamen where the racing took place. After a day of tuning & clearing the barnacles off the bottom of our boat, it was time to race! Our first race was a long distance course around the island city of Xiamen. Our team was able to get a good lead from the start & lengthened that lead until the finish. Go Beach! The next six races were buoyed races & your team was able to pull away every race with clearly better boat handling skills, experience, Team members John Hill & Shane Young speed and pointing. We prepared hard for our trip to China, received good advice from Steve Flam and others, and our hard work paid off with seven straight bullets! Go Beach! Your team had a really good time & met a lot of great people in China! Xiamen University pulled off a fun and challenging regatta full of great culture experiences for visiting teams. After the regatta, we flew back to Shanghai and spent several more days taking in the far east’s culture & bizarre food. To be honest, we don’t really know what we ate most of the time...maybe it’s better that way! China is a country on the move and you can easily see it. We learned that 40% of the world’s cranes are in China & it can easily be seen in its city’s landscapes. The people treated us well and the whole experience was one to remember. Go Beach! Mark Ryan

transpac race his year’s Transpac fleet of 58 boats started over a six day period from July 8 through July 13, with the larger, faster boats starting last. It was Ta truly international event with 13 of the boats being of foreign registry including 5 boats from Japan, 2 from Australia, 1 from Germany, and 1 from Thailand. Several ABYC members sailed on the race and some others helped with the race committee work. Those racing and the boats on which they sailed are: Eric Mc Clure (White Knight ), Howard Hamlin ( Lending Club ), Mike Price (Stumpy J ), Bob Lane (Medicine Man ), Dan Milefchik ( Varuna 46 ), John Latiolait and Gabe Ferramola (Rapid Transit ), and Sam and Willie Bell along with their kids on Westward. Helping on the course marshall and photo boats were Dave Myers, Chas Merrill, Robin Townsend and Chuck Hardin. Jerry Montgomery helped on the race committee start boat, and then he and Marilyn flew to Hawaii where Jerry served on the protest committee. The big story of this years race was that a wooden boat built in 1930, Rapid Transit DORADE,which had won the race to Hawaii in 1936 did it again 77 years after her first Transpac win. She, like Westward, ( built circa 1962) were in impeccable condition and it was great to see such classic boats dueling it out day after day and more than holding their own with the modern racers of today. Next race—— 2015. Be there. Mahalo. Jerry Montgomery

Thanks, Lars hails fromthe fleets The Fleet to Be In! he 2013 Cal 20 Southern California Championships were held June 1st hosted by Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. With a rumor that a tow would be available for ABYC boats to get up to the San Pedro area, four T Cal 20’s showed up Saturday morning ready to travel and do battle. On the scene were Mike VanDyke and Chuck Clay teaming up on Maniacal, Steve George and Ron Wood joining forces on DragonFly 42, John Merchant and his stalwart crew Rob Fuller on Breakfast Club, and Jeff Ives and Phil Soma sailing Bravura. Our tow and support vessel was the 21’ whaler Sydney T. operated by Dave and Sue Crockett. The AB YC contingent arrived at the committee boat east of Cabrillo harbor inside the breakwater to make a total of 11 boats racing for the day. Immediately it was breeze on at about 11-12 knots with smooth seas. We were all stoked with the racing conditions and feeling pretty good after an easygoing ride to our destination. Racing got underway and the competition was excellent making for really good, tight racing. The breeze continued to build throughout the day and a couple boats had to retire due to breakdowns. We also had an interesting incident when a tanker came in and anchored right in the middle of our racecourse! Luckily, Dave and Sue were still on hand and assisted the CBYC race committee in resetting the racecourse. In the end, 3 races were completed. CBYC’ers Kenny Dair and Mike Burch took first, Bill Schopp a close second, with Steve George and Ron Wood taking third(all separated by 1 point). Maniacal and Bravura tied but Maniacal took fourth on the tiebreaker. After an extremely fun and challenging day, with the breeze finally topping out at around 18 knots, we said our thankyou’s and goodbyes and turned downwind for home. Thank you to CBYC and especially Dave and Sue Crockett for the tow and sticking around to offer support! Long Beach Yacht Club’s Wet Wednesday Series Two has concluded it’s five races with Bravura’s Jeff Ives, Phil Soma, and Damon Kunkle taking first overall honors. Second was Rubber Dog with Keith Ives and Chuck Stevens. Third went to Eric & Stacey Conn on Project 14, and fourth went to Bill & Billy Uniack on Kamohoalii. Congratulations to all! Fourth of July Regatta, as part of our own Holiday Series, is now in the books. Seven races over two days were completed with Mike Wood, Ron Wood, and Tom Cooke taking first overall. Second went to Jennifer Kuritz and John Ellis on Hot Pink. Third was the powerhouse team of Patty Nash, Vann Wilson, and Mark Barnard on Waka Waka, followed by Cathy Black-Smith and Todd Smith sailing PCH. Next were Barney Flam, with crew Faye Flam and Dave Myers aboard Rigomortis. Finally, the Cal 20 North American Championships are set for mid-August to be held at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. Check their website for details and don’t miss out! Dan Bates/Jeff Ives

Martyn L Bookwalter assisted by Schock owner Alexander Vucelic on Thursday night sent the B fleet up the bay. When they returned boats were separated by just a few feet from each other. Todd and Kathy Black-Smith rounded the windward mark a half a boat length in front of Don and Chris Taugher. A fun night of sailing followed by another great salmon dinner by Jesus and Kelly! The Fleet 6 traveling team sailed in the High Sierra Regatta July 6 and 7th. 2013 marked the 60th year of Fresno Yacht Club racing on Huntington Lake. Located in the beautiful High Sierras at an elevation of 7200 feet, the lake is approximately 7 miles long and 1 mile wide and wind gusts of 20 knots are not unusual. This year was no exception challenging Fleet 6 which had the most boats entered in the Lido Class. Stu Robertson Alexander, Cindy and Martyn with his crew of Adam and Sammy Elsharhaway took 1st place and Kevin Thomas and crew Helen Burdett a strong second in the A fleet. B fleet saw Kim Adam and Dan McBrearty in 4th place just one point behind the 3rd place finisher. Skippers Bruce Wasson, Nathan Dalleska , Dale Gronewold, and Joel Stone followed and were all within a few points of each other. The tough conditions this year made the beer taste that much better, and a pot luck hosted by Fleet 2 on Saturday brought out the Ukuleles. John Makielski debuted with the Ukulele band, and Paul (Satchmo) Makielski sang his famous rendition of What a Wonderful World. Campfire songs were echoing through the trees, with the music lit by by flashlight. Lead ukulele players Kathy Reed and Cindy Heavrin finished the regatta at the bottom of the A fleet but are in contention for the Trailer Trash award with a flat tire on the way up the hill on Thursday, followed by very nearly losing a wheel off their trailer on the trip home on Sunday.

July 13th warmed up the Lido fleet for the first race in the BBQ series. Once again the conditions were windy, and Melody Wong with her family crew of Luke and Morgan did a nice job of keeping their boat in the upright position. At every mark the first rounding boat is required to do a 360 turn, which makes each leg of the race a new challenge, and making the competition close. It was a tight field with Kathy and Cindy in Nemo prevailing, followed by Bill Moore and crew David McDaniel and Nathan and Riley Dalleska. Remaining BBQ series races are scheduled for 7/27 and 8/10. The 2013 transpac teams needed top sailors so they called on Fleet Six who loaned four great Lido sailors: Sam Bell, Keith Ives, Gabe Ferramola, and Dan Machevlik, all sailing on various boats. For those following Sam Bell and Westward, they finished 3rd in their class and 11th overall as of July 21,with 42 boats reported finished.
