Dja Faunal Reserve Cameroon
DJA FAUNAL RESERVE CAMEROON This is one of the largest and best-protected rainforests in Africa, almost completely surrounded by the Dja river which forms its boundary. 90% of its area is still undisturbed. It is one of IUCN’s fifteen critical zones for the conservation of central African biodiversity and as a result of its inaccessibility, its transitional climate, floristic diversity and borderline location retains a rich vertebrate fauna with 109 species of mammals and a wide variety of primates. Threats to the site: Inadequate management has resulted in erosion of biodiversity, a growth of forest exploitation, agricultural clearance and potential pollution from a cobalt mine. The river forms a natural boundary except to the northeast. Coordinates: 2 °49'-3°23'N, 12 °25'-13 °35'E. DATES AND HISTORY OF ESTABLISHMENT 1932: The area received some protection. In 1947 certain species within Dja were protected by Decree 2254 which regulated hunting in the French African territories; 1950: Protected as a Réserve de Faune et de Chasse by Arrêté 75/50; 1973: Protected as a Réserve de Faune (623,619 ha) under National Forestry Act Ordinance 73/18. -

ABSTRACT The effects of ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea on haematological indices were investigated in albino rats using standard methods. Twenty four albino rats were randomly placed into four experimental groups (A, B, C and D) after seven days of acclimatization with six rats in each group. Animals in groups A, B, C and D were administered the ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea at the doses of 0, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg body weight respectively twice daily for fourteen days through oral intubation. The results showed that haemoglobin (Hb) level, Packed Cell Volume (PCV), red blood cell (RBC) count and white blood cell (WBC) count increased significantly (p<0.05) and dose-dependently. The results suggest that the ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea could be effective in the management of anaemia. A compiled check list of these plants including their Latin names, families, parts used, medicinal uses, and name in different Nigerian states is the main purpose of this study. All available information about either the traditional medicinal plants or ethnobotanical surveys in Nigeria was consulted. The study showed that 325 species and 95 families of medicinal plants were recognized as being used by most of the people in Nigeria for the treatment of various common diseases. Fabaceae has the largest number of species (42), followed by Asteraceae (22), Euphorbiaceae (20), Acanthaceae (13) and Apocynaceae (12). The largest genera were Euphorbia (6 species), Cola and Hibiscus (5 species for each), Albizia, Acacia, Combretum and Ficus (4 species for each), Acalypha, Allium, Clerodendrum and Cleome (3 species for each). The study revealed that traditional medicinal practices have a wide acceptability among the Nigerian people, probably because they believe in its effectiveness. The medicinal uses are varied, and the plant parts that are used ranged from leaves, roots, stem, bark to fruits only, or a combination of two or more in a species or with those of other species. -
Phytochemical, Vitamin and Mineral Compositions of Ethanol Leaf-Extract of Albizia Ferruginea and Its Proximate Composition Using Standard Analytical Methods

E. N and Offor, C. E This study investigated phytochemical, vitamin and mineral compositions of ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea and its proximate composition using standard analytical methods. The results showed the following order of Department of Biochemistry, Ebonyi State occurrence of phytochemicals: phenols > flavonoids > terpenoids > University, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. glycosides >alkaloids >saponins> steroids and tannins. The composition (%) of carbohydrate, protein, moisture, fat, ash and fibre were64.76 ± 2.08, 20.36 ± 1.24, 6.46 ± 1.10,5.24 ± 0.98,2.13 ± 0.36and 1.05 ± 0.10respectively. Kullander* and Tyson R. Roberts** The Lukuga River is a large permanent river intermittently serving as the only effluent of Lake Tanganyika. For at least the first one hundred km its water is almost pure lake water. Seventy-seven species of fish were collected from six localities along the Lukuga River. Species of cichlids, cyprinids, and clupeids otherwise known only from Lake Tanganyika were identified from rapids in the Lukuga River at Niemba, 100 km from the lake, whereas downstream localities represent a Congo River fish fauna. Cichlid species from Niemba include special- ized algal browsers that also occur in the lake (Simochromis babaulti, S. diagramma) and one invertebrate picker representing a new species of a genus (Tanganicodus) otherwise only known from the lake. Other fish species from Niemba include an abundant species of clupeid, Stolothrissa tanganicae, otherwise only known from Lake Tangan- yika that has a pelagic mode of life in the lake. These species demonstrate that their adaptations are not neces- sarily dependent upon the lake habitat. Other endemic taxa occurring at Niemba are known to frequent vegetat- ed shore habitats or river mouths similar to the conditions at the entrance of the Lukuga, viz. Chelaethiops minutus (Cyprinidae), Lates mariae (Latidae), Mastacembelus cunningtoni (Mastacembelidae), Astatotilapia burtoni, Ctenochromis horei, Telmatochromis dhonti, and Tylochromis polylepis (Cichlidae). The Lukuga frequently did not serve as an ef- fluent due to weed masses and sand bars building up at the exit, and low water levels of Lake Tanganyika. -
