Also please take a moment to ask yourself how you will use the Seattle University education that your diploma represents. Shel Silverstein's poem, "The Magic Carpet," might help you. You have a magic carpet That will whiz you through the air, To Spain or Maine or Africa Ifyou just tell it where. So will you let it take you Where you've never been before, Or will you buy some drapes to match And use it on your floor? I hope you will frame your diploma and hang it on the wall with pride. But I also hope you will use the education it represents as a magic carpet and will take a ride on it. Here are ten ways you might use your Seattle University education. Find a job in an occupation that really invigorates you, challenges you, and allows you to strive toward your fullest potential. Don't stop learning just because you have earned your degree. Your diploma is only a foundation; continue reading, thinking, and learning throughout your life. Develop colleagues, associates, friends, and life-partners who share your interests and commitments. Apply what you've learned to create a family (your own or others) that is nurturing and supportive. Serve the 98 out of 100 people in the global village who have not had the privilege of a college education. Ride the magic carpet of your education to see the world and to fall in love with its different cultures, people, and perspectives. Use your education not only "to give back" to those who have helped you, but to "give forward" to future students. Serve your country (America or another) so that it stands for and supports what you have learned. Use your education both for others, especially for the poor, but also for yourself to become the person you know you can be. Make of your education a temple to praise, reverence, and serve God. I hope you will add to my list your own ways to use your education. Please know that my prayers and blessings are with you on your magic carpet ride. p Stephen V. Sundborg, S.J.
