Farewell to the old year -- 5753 -- and ring in the new -- 5754. But we do not exactly ring in the new, do we? It is the sound of the shofar that ushers in the new year for us. It is more like an alert than a ring. To what are we alerted, you might ask; to the fact that we are about to receive a gift. First of all, the gift of time -- hours, days, weeks and months, an entire calendar for our use. But this gift, as the saying goes, is non-refundable. Use it or lose it. Here comes the shofar to alert us. Use it! Do not lose it As you know, time is neutral, a blank page on the calendar. Only we can fill it with meaning by what we consider important. Thus in Jewish life we bend time to our will. That is how we transform a simple Thursday into Rosh Hashanah and all other significant Jewish moments. To a person whose life revolves around the cycle of the seasons, time has a natural profile. To a farmer, the seasons are defined. To urban/suburbanites, time is an abstraction. Not so in the Jewish calendar. A shofar alerts us to reflect on how we use this precious gift because, considering it from the Jewish perspective, time is life -- nothing abstract about it. Perhaps the shofars alert raises the question: what are you doing with your life? The haunting sound of the shofar awakens us to take a good look at ourselves and take our bearing. The call of the shofar beckons us to ascend to a higher level of living, ever ascending to make our life a sacred pilgrimage. When the shofar sounds, it is time to get going. You do not want to be left behind. To one and all, a year of renewal from our house to yours.

RABBI BERKO WITS APPOINTED BY GOVERNOR WILDER

It-is-with great pride that we announce that Rabbi Laszlo Berkowits has received a commission of appointment to the Council on Human Rights of the Commonwealth of Virginia from Governor L. Douglas Wilder. Rabbi Berkowits became a member of the Council on Human Rights effective July 1, 1993 to serve for four years ending June 30, 1997. Rabbi Berkowits considers this a great opportunity to serve the larger community and the Commonwealth of Virginia in the field of human rights, which is of special interest to him.

We anticipate that the plan will be completed by mid-winter. Thanks for your continued interest and support! nM A Word From the President

We have finished an extremely busy year at our temple and a lot has been accomplished. Our two new professional staff members are on the job, Judy Seiff as our administrator and Dina Burt as our educator. I am extremely pleased to have two professionals of such high caliber with us and look forward to working with both Judy and Dina in their new jobs. Major decisions are facing us this coming year. We are poised for major progress in our long-range planning effort, and the congregation will be asked to consider a range of options in addressing our member needs, building and land use, property values, staffing requirements and overall finances. As our membership continues to grow, we are working harder to ensure that both new and older families continue to feel welcome at Temple Rodef Shalom. A new year signals the start of a new page in our own Book of Life. As we welcome the coming of our New Year 5754, we need to take stock of our lives and our priorities. Some of the things to think about.. .When was the last time I actually sat down and talked to my spouse or my children? How often do I take time just for myself? How frequently do I make the extra effort to weave Friday night services and a Shabbat dinner into our family life? In the midst of our busy and hectic schedules the greatest joy we can share with others is to show we care, ignoring the little things that may bother us and really dont make any difference in the grand scheme of things. May you have a New Year filled with health, happiness and success. LShanah Tovah, N. Richard Friedman RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
