E. 1,000-1,500 2004 ` 1919, June 15 — “Handley Page” Attempted Transatlantic Flight from Newfoundland, Harbor Grace Mail (AAMC 1005a). Harbor Grace Jun. 14 circular datestamp, lightly cancelled $1.00 on 15c Surcharge (C2), rare “Atlantic Aerial Mail, Handley Page, Jun. 14, 1919” oval cachet on back of cover to Hawick, England, redirected to officer with North Russian Relief Force in Archangel, Russia, stained and water damaged, both sides affixed to inner card for support — aviators Kerr and Brackley abandoned their plans for a transat- lantic flight after learning of Alcock and Brown’s success, they crash landed in Nova Scotia en route to New York, and mail intended for the R-34 dirigible flight arrived too late — the condition of this cover may be due to the crash, the forwarding to British forces in Archangel is extraordinary, AAMC $1,800.00 without premium for oval cachet ............ E. 1,000-1,500 2005 2005 ` 1919, July 17 — Third Attempted Transatlantic Flight by “Martinsyde”, Newfoundland to England, Supplementary Mail (AAMC 1008). Hotel corner card to England with $1.00 on 15c Surcharge, Without Comma After “Post” or Period After “1919” (C2b) tied by St. John’s Jul. 12 machine cancel, backstamped London Jan. 7, 1920, addressed in the hand of the “Martinsyde” mechanic, cover slightly creased, some toned spots, stamp has rounded corner and small faults................................................................................................................................ A FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL COVER FROM THE THIRD “MARTINSYDE” ATTEMPT TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC. ONLY 25 COVERS WERE ADDED TO THE MAIL FOR THE JULY 17 FLIGHT, WHICH CRASHED ON TAKE-OFF. .......................................................................... The “Martinsyde” was rebuilt after the May 1919 crash. Major Raynham and his new naviga- tor, Lieut. Biddlescombe, made another attempt on July 17, but the plane crashed during take-off. The mail bag, which contained 25 additional letters franked with the $1.00 Alcock- Brown stamp, was taken to England by Major Raynham but forgotten until the following January, which explains the Jan. 7 backstamp applied by the London post office. .................... Special Blue stamp tied by one of two strikes of “First Aerial Mail, Great Britain to Australia, Received, 26 Feb. 1920” on cover to Adelaide, stamp has faint corner crease ending in small tears at lower right, cover folded at right with small piece of flap missing .......................................
