The only loss was a 3-2 set back at No. 3 seed Sam Houston State on Sept. 22. $-Southland Conference Tournament, Nov. 18-20 • The All-Southland Conference volleyball teams were released this week and sophomore setter Marissa Collins was the only Sugar Bear represented on the first or second team. Col- 2011 Southland Conference Standings lins earned second team honors in a year in which she led the league in conference games East Division only with 11.64 a/s. Last season, Collins was named the Freshman of the Year and Setter Central Arkansas 10-6 .625 16-14 .533 of the Year in 2010 and earned first team honors. Cristin Curl and Taylor Hammonds were Lamar 9-7 .562 11-20 .355 named honorable mention. Northwestern State 6-10 .375 10-19 .345 • Marissa Collins is the first player in league history to earn Southland Freshman of the Year Nicholls State 5-11 .312 18-14 .562 and Setter of the Year awards in the same season. Collins ranked 15th in the nation and McNeese State 5-11 .312 10-20 .333 led the Southland with 11.54 assists per set in 2010. Collins has moved into fourth all-time on Southeastern La. 1-15 .062 5-28 .152 UCA’s career assists list with 2,467. Her 1,419 assists in 2010 were the second most assists in a West Division SLC Pct. Overall Pct. single season for UCA. This season, Collins is averaging 10.3 assists per set. In two consecutive Texas State 15-1 .938 24-7 .774 matches this season, Collins set a career highs in assists. Collins earned a career-high 60 as- UTSA 14-2 .875 20-10 .667 sists in a 3-1 win over UT Arlington on Oct. 8. The 60 assists came in just four sets for a 15.0 a/s Sam Houston State 11-5 .688 17-12 .586 average. She followed that up with 61 assists in a 3-2 victory over McNeese State on Oct. 13. UT Arlington 8-8 .500 12-18 .400 • Collins was UCA’s fourth Southland Freshman of the Year in five years. She joined Robyn Stephen F. Austin 7-9 .438 14-17 .452 Smith (2006), Chloe Smith (2007) and Jessica Hays (2009). Collins is also the third consecutive A&M Corpus Christi 5-11 .312 13-20 .394 Setter of the Year for the Sugar Bears, with Robyn Smith winning it the previous two seasons. Southland Conference Schedule • Senior libero Cristin Curl was named to the All-Southland Conference Second Team in 2010 and was a preseason All-SLC First Team selection in 2011. The Amarillo, Texas native ranked Date Match Time fifth in league play with 4.65 digs per set in 2010. Curl, 2009’s SLC Libero of the Year, is fourth Nov. 18 No. 2 UTSA vs. No. 7 SFA 11 a.m. on UCA’s career digs list with 1,768. Curl has been named the Southland’s Defensive Player Nov. 18 No. 3 Sam Houston St. vs. No. 6 UTA 1:30 p.m. of the Week two different times this season. She was given the honor on Oct. 3 and again Nov. 18 No. 1 Texas St. vs. No. 8 Northwestern St. 4 p.m. this past week on Nov. 14.
