He first began studying Latin during his primary and second education, and in 2009 he earned a B.A. in Classics, magna cum laude, and with highest honors, from Williams College, located in Williamstown, MA. In the fall of 2008, he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He matriculated at Brown University in Providence, RI, in the fall of 2009 as a graduate student in the Department of Classics. During his time at Brown, he presented a paper on similes in the Odyssey at the 2012 meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South and published a review of a monograph on Aeschylus’ Suppliant Women in Bryn Mawr Classical Review as well as an article on depictions of choral performance in Attic vase-paintings in Greek Roman and Byzantine Studies. When at noon he found himself in the center of the ancient theater, a young Greek, unsuspectingly as handsome as they were, let out a cry (not one of amazement; he had not felt amazement at all, and had he felt it, certainly he would not have expressed it), a simple cry perhaps as a result of the untameable joy of his youth or one with which he could test the acoustics of the place. Press ix INTRODUCTION A PROGRAM FOR DIONYSUS In the last decade of the fifth century BCE, the Athenian comic playwright Aristophanes brought forth a production which had as its primary theme the state of Athens’ poetic culture. In the comedy, the poor poetry currently being produced in the city prompts a trip to the Underworld, where the luminaries of a bygone era now reside. The purpose of the trip is to return to earth in the company of someone who can help improve Athens’ slate of cultural offerings. Before the travelers depart with their savior, they participate in and observe heated discussions about what makes for good poetry. The description in the previous paragraph captures the major plot points of Aristophanes’ Frogs, which premiered at the Lenaea festival of 405 and was one of his most celebrated comedies. According to tradition, Frogs was so well received that a special commendation was bestowed upon Aristophanes in recognition of his achievement and it was arranged that the play be given a second production soon after its first, both unusual measures.1 In the comedy, Dionysus, prompted both by his fondness for the recently deceased Euripides and by his disgust for the tragedians who are still living and producing their work, men such as Xenocles and Pythangelus, descends to the 1 PCG iii.2 T 1 35-9; Ar. Frogs, Hyp I.37-40. 1 Underworld in order to seek out his favorite tragedian.2 Once there, he is enlisted to judge a contest between Euripides and Aeschylus for possession of the “Tragic Throne,” which is granted to the best tragedian in the Underworld and entitles whoever holds it to dine in a special section reserved for the god of the dead Pluto and those who hold the thrones in various others fields of endeavor.

In this paper I shall try to solve some of these by applying a new perspective to the text. I believe that this fragment is connected with a specific literary feature of drama especially prominent in the bnal decades of the bfth century B.C., viz. theatrical self-consciousness and the use of Dionysus, the god of Athenian drama, as a basic symbol for this tendency. 2 The History of the Papyrus Among the most important papyri brought to light by Anton Fackelmann is an anthology of Greek prose and poetry, which includes 19 verses of a dramatic text in catalectic anapestic tetrameters. Dr Fackelmann entrusted the publication of this papyrus to Barbel Kramer of the University of Cologne. Her editio princeps appeared in 1979 as P. Schlegel and the Nineteenth-Century Damnatio of Euripides Ernst Behler N HIS 1802-04 Berlin lectures on aesthetics, August Wilhelm Schle­ I gel claimed that his younger brother Friedrich (in his essay On the Study of Greek Poetry U795]), had been the first in the modern age to discern the "immeasurable gulf" separating Euripides from Aeschylus and Sophocles, thereby reviving an attitude the Greeks themselves had assumed towards the poet. The elder Schlegel noted that certain contemporaries of Euripides felt the "deep decline" both in his tragic art and in the music of the time: Aristophanes, with his unrelenting satire, had been assigned by God as Euripides' "eternal scourge"; 1 Plato, in reproaching the poets for fostering the passionate state of mind through excessive emotionalism, actually pointed to Euripides (SK I 40). Schlegel believed that his younger brother's observation of the profound difference between Euripides and the two other Greek tragedians was an important intuition that required detailed critical and comparative analysis for sufficient development (SK II 359). By appropriating this task as his own, August Wilhelm Schlegel inaugurated a phenomenon that we may describe as the nineteenth-century damnatio of Euripides. The condemnation of Euripides by these early German romantics was no extravagant and isolated moment in their critical activity: it constituted a central event in the progressive formation of a new literary theory. Their pronouncements must be seen in the context of a larger movement, towards the end of the eighteenth century, that transformed the critical scene in Europe: the fall of the classicist doctrine and the rise of the new literary theory of romanticism.

    This page intentionally left blank MONEY AND THE EARLY GREEK MIND How were the Greeks of the sixth century bc able to invent philosophy and tragedy? In this book Richard Seaford argues that a large part of the answer can be found in another momentous development, the invention and rapid spread of coinage, which produced the first ever thoroughly monetised society. By transforming social relations, monetisation contributed to the ideas of the universe as an impersonal system (presocratic philosophy) and of the individual alienated from his own kin and from the gods (in tragedy). Seaford argues that an important precondition for this monetisation was the Greek practice of animal sacrifice, as represented in Homeric epic, which describes a premonetary world on the point of producing money. This book combines social history, economic anthropology, numismatics and the close reading of literary, inscriptional, and philosophical texts. Questioning the origins and shaping force of Greek philosophy, this is a major book with wide appeal. richard seaford is Professor of Greek Literature at the University of Exeter.     Bacchylides 17: Singing and Usurping the Paean Maria Pavlou ACCHYLIDES 17, a Cean commission performed on Delos, has been the subject of extensive study and is Bmuch admired for its narrative artistry, elegance, and excellence. The ode was classified as a dithyramb by the Alex- andrians, but the Du-Stil address to Apollo in the closing lines renders this classification problematic and has rather baffled scholars. The solution to the thorny issue of the ode’s generic taxonomy is not yet conclusive, and the dilemma paean/ dithyramb is still alive.1 In fact, scholars now are more inclined to place the poem somewhere in the middle, on the premise that in antiquity the boundaries between dithyramb and paean were not so clear-cut as we tend to believe.2 Even though I am 1 Paean: R. Hackworth 2015 2 Abstract This dissertation is a study of the Epigraphical Hymn to Apollo that was found at Delphi in 1893, and since attributed to Athenaios. It is believed to have been performed as part of the Athenian Pythaïdes festival in the year 128/7 BCE. After a brief introduction to the hymn, I provide a survey and history of the most important editions of the text. I offer a new critical edition equipped with a detailed apparatus. This is followed by an extended epigraphical commentary which aims to describe the history of, and arguments for and and against, readings of the text as well as proposed supplements and restorations. The guiding principle of this edition is a conservative one—to indicate where there is uncertainty, and to avoid relying on other, similar, texts as a resource for textual restoration. A commentary follows, which traces word usage and history, in an attempt to explore how an audience might have responded to the various choices of vocabulary employed throughout the text. Emphasis is placed on Athenaios’ predilection to utilize new words, as well as words that are non-traditional for Apolline narrative. The commentary considers what role prior word usage (texts) may have played as intertexts, or sources of poetic resonance in the ears of an audience.
