Ackerly, Chair Professor Paul V. A. Fine Professor Scott L. Stephens Spring 2015 Comparative Ecophysiology and Evolutionary Biology of Island and Mainland Chaparral Communities © 2015 by Aaron Robert Ramirez Abstract Comparative Ecophysiology and Evolutionary Biology of Island and Mainland Chaparral Communities by Aaron Robert Ramirez Doctor of Philosophy in Integrative Biology University of California, Berkeley Professor David D. Ackerly, Chair The unique nature of island ecosystems have fascinated generations of naturalists, ecologists, and evolutionary biologists. Studying island systems led to the development of keystone biological theories including: Darwin and Wallace’s theories of natural selection, Carlquist’s insights into the biology of adaptive radiations, MacArthur and Wilson’s theory of island biogeography, and many others. Utilizing islands as natural laboratories allows us to discover the underlying fabric of ecology and evolutionary biology. This dissertation represents my attempt to contribute to this long and storied scientific history by thoroughly investigating two aspects of island biology: 1. the role of island climate in shaping drought tolerance of woody plants, and 2.

California Native Plant Society - Sanhedrin Chapter Newsletter Fall 2014 Sanhedrin Chapter Fall Presentation - October 16th at 7 pm Ken Montgomery: Native Plant Gardening for the Drought Ukiah Garden Club House, 1203 W. Clay St. Ukiah Free and open to all Ken Montgomery is the longtime owner of the Anderson Valley Nursery in Boonville, specializing in California native plants. He is a delightful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable presenter. Ken brings a wealth of practical knowledge in all aspects of gardening, including native plants. He has spoken with other groups and has been instrumental in restoration work, including involving students in these projects. In this time of drought and lawns drying up, come find out how native plants can save on water use, be low maintenance and enhance our environment. Hedgerow uses will also be discussed. Fall Events Potter Valley Oak Restoration; Public Workshop, September 20 The workshop will highlight the protection and restoration of oaks in Potter Valley, a topic pertinent to all of Mendocino County. Interested residents, especially from Potter Valley, are cordially invited to this free event. Speakers will discuss the status of oaks in California and in Potter Valley followed by a fun and beautiful presentation about wildlife in the oaks, a story of incredible productivity and diversity. Park Steiner (463-4265) or Jackson Ford (463-4622) * Mendocino Co. DOT. Orr Creek Clean-up, Saturday, September 20 Love your rivers? The Russian and its many tributaries such as Orr Creek are in need of help. This is a good time to get involved in one of the many river clean-ups scheduled this fall.

Trees, shrubs and sub-shrubs likely to be encountered on sample transects, Channel Islands National Park, California 4 Shrubs and trees should respond to the cessation of grazing in several ways: with increased canopy growth, additional stem production, and for certain species, with seedling recruitment. Therefore, the method for monitoring these changes will record canopy coverage, stem density, plant size and recruitment. Additionally, conservation strategies written for the islands (Coonan et al 1996) identify litter accumulation as an important process for seed bank development and eventual community recovery.

Except for the effec's of the weather which are given elsewhere in this report, the year was one of steady and sound development. The building program of the previous year had been completed, and early in 1971 landscaping around the annex was finis3ed and the grounds once again were quiet and serene, suitable for study and contemplation by the thousands of persons who visit the garden each year. Among events which undoubtedly will mark this year in the garden's history are two, especially, which should be mentioned. The botanic garden is a member of the American Association of Museums and durinJ; the year we applied for accreditation by that organization. In August we were notified that we had been granted interim approval until an on-site evalu1tion of the institution could be made by the AAM Accredit1tion Visitin~ Commit tee. This visit is expected early in 1972. The second item of interest is that the botanic garden for the first time applied for a plant patent to cover a new hybrid which soon will be released to the horticultural trade.
