Sponsor: Oklahoma Center for Advancement of Science and Technology PI/PD: Allen Apblett Development of Nanoparticulate Vanadium Bronzes for Detection of Peroxides and Improvised Explosives Explosives pose a deadly risk as a consequence of intentional use by terrorists and accidental detonation resulting from mishandling of explosives, discharge of unexploded ordinance, or even buildup of peroxides in otherwise safe solvents. While there are a large number of sensor technologies for explosives, there is a significant shortfall in ones that can detect improvised explosives such as peroxide-based explosives. Materials that react with these types of explosives to give a dramatic change in color are being used to develop sensor technologies that can protect our society from the threat of explosives. • The Formation of Temporary Communities in Anime Fandom: a Story of Bottom-Up Globalization ______
THE FORMATION OF TEMPORARY COMMUNITIES IN ANIME FANDOM: A STORY OF BOTTOM-UP GLOBALIZATION ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Fullerton ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Geography ____________________________________ By Cynthia R. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States.

  • What Remains History and Locations of World Fairs
WHAT REMAINS HISTORY AND LOCATIONS OF WORLD FAIRS This is a chronological list of exhibitions and fairs held throughout the world that gained international attention. A few regional fairs are included if they were significant to the author or for showcasing emerging technology. This list is a compilation from various sources, trying to respect the capitalization traditions from the countries of origin. When controversy arises about the date or name of a fair (should the 1849 fair held in Birmingham, United Kingdom be referred to as “Exhibition of Industrial Arts and Manufacturers” or “Exposition of British Society”) a choice has been made so the checklist remains an index of fairs. Brown text indicates that the fair occurred before the Bureau international des expositions (BIE) on November 22, 1928 or was not sanctioned by them. Purple text also shows the fair was not sanctioned, but indicates there is a link to additional information researched by the author. Black text indicates a BIE sanctioned fair. Blue text indicates a link to additional information about a sanctioned fair. 1790's 1791 Prague, Bohemia; First Industrial Exhibition 1798 Paris, France; L'Exposition publique des produits de l'industrie française 1800's 1801 Paris, France; L'Exposition publique des produits de l'industrie française (Second Exposition) 1802 Paris, France; L'Exposition publique des produits de l'industrie française (Third Exposition) 1806 Paris, France; L'Exposition publique des produits de l'industrie française (Fourth Exposition) 1810's 1819 Paris,

Review Expander Technologies for Automotive Engine Organic Rankine Cycle Applications Fuhaid Alshammari 1, Apostolos Karvountzis-Kontakiotis 1, Apostolos Pesyridis 1,2,* and Muhammad Usman 1 1 Centre of Advanced Powertrain and Fuels (CAPF), Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, Brunel University London, Middlesex UB8 3PH, UK; [email protected] (F.A.); [email protected] (A.K.-K.); [email protected] (M.U.) 2 Metapulsion Engineering Ltd., Northwood, Middlesex HA6, UK * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 13 June 2018; Accepted: 17 July 2018; Published: 20 July 2018 Abstract: The strive towards ever increasing automotive engine efficiencies for both diesel and gasoline engines has in recent years been forced by ever-stringent emissions regulations, as well as the introduction of fuel consumption regulations. The untapped availability of waste heat in the internal combustion engine (ICE) exhaust and coolant systems has become a very attractive focus of research attention by industry and academia alike. Even state of the art diesel engines operating at their optimum lose approximately 50% of their fuel energy in the form of heat. As a result, waste heat recovery (WHR) systems have gained popularity as they can deliver a reduction in fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions. Of these, the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is a well matured waste heat recovery technology that can be applied in vehicle powertrains, mainly due to the low additional exhaust backpressure on the engine and the potential opportunity to utilize various engine waste heat sources. ORCs have attracted high interest again recently but without commercial exploitation as of today due to the significant on-cost they represent to the engine and vehicle.
