Although he means well, he always leaves things too late and ends up missing special moments in his son’s life. Meanwhile a divorced neighbour is moving in on Liz, offering to provide her with all that’s missing in her life and making the most of opportunities provided by Howard being away so much. What Jamie wants more than anything else for Christmas is the latest must‐have action figure, Turboman. All the kids want on and Jamie is desperate to get one as well. Howard promises Liz that he will get one for Jamie but of course he forgets and goes out on Christmas Eve only to find all the shops have sold out. He meets Myron, a postman who is on the same quest and the two of them enter into a bitter competition to find the last Turboman. Howard becomes increasingly desperate, whether it’s a case of spending enormous sums of money in a dodgy warehouse, being first in a radio competition or outrunning his opponent. He even considers stealing another child’s present. Eventually Howard admits defeat and doesn’t know how to tell his son that he was unable to get him what he had set his heart on. However, by accident, he ends up starring as Turboman in the Christmas parade, and having to battle his postman adversary for the special edition Turboman doll that he is able to give to Jamie.

  • 'TOON IN, 'TOON OUT: AMERICAN TELEVISION ANIMATION and the SHAPING of AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE, 1948-1980 by David Perlmutt
‘TOON IN, ‘TOON OUT: AMERICAN TELEVISION ANIMATION AND THE SHAPING OF AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE, 1948-1980 by David Perlmutter A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Joint Master’s Program – Departments of History The University of Manitoba / The University of Winnipeg Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Copyright © 2010 by David Perlmutter ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a systematic study of significant American television animation programs produced between 1948 and 1980, with special attention given to selected works produced by three influential studios: Hanna-Barbera, Jay Ward and Filmation. It considers how outside forces such as television network censorship, grassroots political activism, and other social and political forces served to limit how the genre developed, and the extent to which producers chose to test the limits to get their points across. It provides a discussion of masculine images in television animation of the 1950s and 1960s, and of the reactions of television animation producers to outside concerns regarding violent imagery in children’s programming, and the threat of censorship related to this, in the 1970s. My thesis demonstrates that television animation producers, as a result of the need to remain actively involved in production, were forced to change and adapt with the times around them. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my family and friends for supporting me through this endeavor. I have appreciated their support especially in those times when I doubted my abilities, because they never did. I particularly want to thank Professor Churchill and Professor Elvins for giving me their advice and guidance in the long and arduous process of conceiving the draft.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Disruptive Convergence: The Struggle Over the Licensing and Sale of Hollywood’s Feature Films to Television Before 1955 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Jennifer Anne Porst 2014 © Copyright by Jennifer Anne Porst 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Disruptive Convergence: The Struggle Over the Licensing and Sale of Hollywood’s Feature Films to Television Before 1955 by Jennifer Anne Porst Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor John T. Caldwell, Chair This project is located at the intersection of television and film studies and examines the causes and effects of disruption and convergence in the media industries through a case study of the struggle over Hollywood’s feature films on television before 1955. Since television began broadcasting in earnest in 1948, two years after Hollywood saw its box-office revenues decline precipitously from their all-time high in 1946, the important question to ask becomes: why did it take seven years for Hollywood’s features to make their way to television? Through an investigation of the efforts made by the film and television industries in the 1940s and 1950s to work towards feature films appearing on television, this project concludes that Hollywood’s feature films did not appear on television until 1956, not because of the long held assumptions that the film industry was either apathetic or hostile to the nascent television industry, but rather ii as a result of a complex combination of industrial, social, legal, and governmental forces.
