Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology, number 177, 135 pages, 52 figures, 17 tables, 1975.—Omobranchus comprises 19 species, one of which includes two subspecies. Three species are described as new: O. meniscus, from Thailand, O. steinitzi, from the southern Red Sea, and O. verticalis, from Queensland. A key is given to all taxa of Omobranchus, and sexual dimorphism, geographic distribution and variation, habitat, and nomen- clature are discussed. All taxa are illustrated and their distributions plotted on maps. Neotypes are designated for the following species: Blennechis fasciolatus Valenciennes (1836), Petroscirtes lineolatus Kner (1868a,b), Petroscirtes ferox Herre (1927). Omobranchus is native to the Indo-west Pacific, and all taxa, except one sub- species, occur only in areas west of the Andesite Line. One species, O. punctatus, has been introduced into the Caribbean. Circumstantial evidence indicates that O. punctatus was probably introduced by ships transporting East Indian coolies from Madras and Calcutta around southern Africa to the Caribbean between 1845 and the opening of the Panama Canal (1914). New information (range extensions, taxonomy, errata), since Springer's 1972 Synopsis of the Tribe Omobranchini, is given for the genera Enchelyurus, Haptogenys, Omox, and Parenchelyurus. Haptogenys quadripora Springer is synonymized with H. bipunctata (Day). They provide an unparalleled opportunity for studying marine biogeography because they include the globally distributed families Tripterygiidae (triplefin blennies) and Blenniidae (combtooth blennies), the temperate Clinidae (kelp blennies), and three largely Neotropical families (Labrisomidae, Chaenopsidae, and Dactyloscopidae). However, interpretation of these distributional patterns has been hindered by largely unresolved inter-familial relationships and the lack of evidence of monophyly of the Labrisomidae. Results: We explored the phylogenetic relationships of the Blenniiformes based on one mitochondrial (COI) and four nuclear (TMO-4C4, RAG1, Rhodopsin, and Histone H3) loci for 150 blenniiform species, and representative outgroups (Gobiesocidae, Opistognathidae and Grammatidae). According to the consensus of Bayesian Inference, Maximum Likelihood, and Maximum Parsimony analyses, the monophyly of the Blenniiformes and the Tripterygiidae, Blenniidae, Clinidae, and Dactyloscopidae is supported.

A total of 210 individuals representing 3 fish species (Rusty blenny-Parablennius sanguinolentus, Freshwater blenny-Salaria fluviatilis and Peacock blenny-Salaria pavo) were sampled from five (Beşgöz Creek Estuary, Manavgat River Es- tuary, Karpuzçay Creek Estuary, Köyceğiz Lagoon Lake and Beymelek Lagoon Lake) of the locali- ties investigated. The high juvenile densities of S. fluviatilis in Karpuzçay Creek Estuary and P. sanguinolentus in Beşgöz Creek Estuary were observed. Various threat factors were observed in five different native habitats of Blenny species.     CHAPTER-I INTRODUCTION Andaman and Nicobar Islands is situated in the Bay of Bengal. The Nicobar archipelago in the Bay of Bengal as well as a part of it in the Indian Ocean is the abode of the Nicobarese a scheduled tribe of India.It is separated by the turbulent ten degree channel from the Andamans and spread over 300 kilometres.The Archipelago comprises nineteen islands namely Car Nicobar, Batti Malv, Chowra, Tillangchong, Teressa, Bompoka, Kamorta, Trinkat, Nancowry, Kachal, Meroe, Trak, Treis, Menchal, Pulo Milo, Little Nicobar, Cobra, Kondul, And Great Nicobar. These geographical names, given by the foreigners, are not used by the indigenous people of the islands. The native names of the islands as well as their dimensions are set out in descending order from north to south. Of the nineteen islands only twelve are inhabited while seven remain uninhabited. The inhabitants of these twelve, Teressa, Bompoka, Nancowry, Kamorta, Trinkat and Kachal, Great Nicobar, Little islands are divided into five groups again, depending on language differentiation among the Nicobarese living in different islands. Accordingly, the groups are located in Car Nicobar, Chowra Nicobar, Pulo Milo and Kondul Islands. Broadly the Nicobars can be divided into three groups: 1. Car Nicobar: The Island of Car Nicobar popularly known as Carnic, the headquarters of the Nicobar Islands, is a flat piece of land with an area of 24 sq.kms. It has an airfield which receives a Boeing 737 every Monday from Calcutta, via, Port Blair. In fact, this is the only airlink with the rest of the world. 2.

A major national pro- gramme on DNA barcoding of fish and marine life was initiated in India by the authors during 2006 and 115 species of marine fish covering Carangids, Clupeids, Scombrids, Groupers, Sciaenids, Silverbellies, Mullids, Polynemids and Silur- ids representing 79 Genera and 37 Families from the Indian Ocean have been barcoded for the first time using cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COI) of the mtDNA. The species were represented by multiple specimens and a total of 397 sequences were generated. After amplification and sequencing of 707 base pair fragment of COI, primers were trimmed which invari- ably generated a 655 base pair barcode sequence. The average Kimura two parameter (K2P) distances within species, gen- era, families, orders were 0.30%, 6.60%, 9.91%, 16.00%, respectively. In addition to barcode-based species identification system, phylogenetic relationships among the species have also been attempted. The neighbour-joining tree revealed distinct clusters in concurrence with the taxonomic status of the species.
