NEWS & EVENTS Round Up St Edmund’s GOLDEN JUBILEE St Edmund’s School spent the day celebrating their Golden Jubilee on Thursday 23rd May. It was the perfect weather! The children were very excited and have loved finding out about the history of the school. Busbridge Junior School News

July sees the 50th commemoration of the first men on the moon.

Back in May we celebrated this in school through one of our DoubleDays. For two days the children carried out work along a Moon theme. They composed Moon music, created Moon art and learnt more about the incredible scientific adventure that took men to the Moon (and back again!).

The children were entrusted with the safety of their very own eggstronaut, Neil Eggstrong.

They had to investigate suitable materials for a space capsule that would return Neil to terra firma in one piece. The photos show one of the groups showing their horror at the injuries sustained by their eggstronaut upon landing. Yuck.

Cassidy, one of our space capsule engineers exclaimed “It was a tricky project. It would seem that bubble wrap and straw are not the ideal materials to ensure a safe landing back on Earth. We hope that NASA take note of our findings!”

We also took time to look in wonder at photos of the earth from space. It reminded us of how precious the Earth is and how much we should look after it.

Our Governors and whole school community have been revisiting our school vision recently. The words which we feel best describe our vision are thus: “To be a school that reflects the love of Christ : cherishing each other as unique individuals and challenging all to achieve and succeed.” Hopefully if you know families linked to our school they will be able to talk about our vision in practice. If I notice an interesting sky, I will down tools and rush into my Busbridge 1 garden with my camera. I’d like to share some of those moments with you.

Differing atmospheric conditions, especially air temperature, moisture content and movement, give rise to different types of cloud. Clouds form when water vapour in the air Head in the Clouds condenses to give tiny droplets of liquid water or ice, usually at high altitudes because of the “lapse rate” – decreasing temperature with altitude. Clouds usually have flat bases: this is the “condensation level”.

2 “Mamma” clouds, like cows’ Ask a child to draw a cloud and you will probably get a udders, sometimes hang typical cumulus cloud (1). These often form on a cold underneath very massive cumulus front (a line of blue triangles on a weather map) where (or stratus) clouds and usually large “blobs” of warm air are booted up off the ground in result in rain. convection currents by a mass of undercutting cold air. If they become very tall and dense - up to 10 miles high! - rainfall and even thunder and lightning may occur.

Between the showers caused by cumulus clouds there 3 may be bursts of sunshine, which is when we tend to get rainbows (5). Sunlight passes into each raindrop and is reflected out from the back inner surface of each drop, the different wavelengths of each colour being bent by different amounts, so the colours are split up.

A smoother ascent of air 5 often occurs on a warm front (a line of red half discs on a weather map) where warm air is sliding up over colder air. This 4 gives rise to stratus clouds – rather boring Disturbance in thinner layers of grey layers of cloud. If cloud may create a “mackerel sky” these clouds become looking like the pattern on the particularly thick, rainy fish’s skin. also occur. www.bhcgodalming.org/thebridge Page 14

6 7

If there is disturbance within a stratus layer, stratocumulus clouds (3) form, looking a bit like a thick sheep fleece flung across the sky. 8

Very high level clouds looking like long hair flying in the wind are cirrus clouds and are always made out of ice crystals. An aeroplane contrail is similar (7). If they all flow in one direction with a slight curl in the tail, they are called “mares’ tails” and herald the change in wind direction with an approaching front.

Nacreous, or “mother-of-pearl” clouds (8) can sometimes be seen up to 20 miles high where 9 the ice crystals scatter light from the sun when it is just below the horizon; they appear iridescent as the sunlight is separated into rainbow colours.

A separate post-sunset phenomenon is a sun pillar (6) photographed over the trees in Tuesley Lane; these also occur because of low sunlight shining through cirrus-type clouds.

Sundogs (10) and solar halos (9), again photographed from our front garden, are also 10 caused by ice crystals in high level clouds refracting the sunlight.

So next time you see me with my head in the clouds, you’ll know why! And I hope you will share my enthusiasm!

The Rev. David Mace (1937 – 2019)

The members of Busbridge and Hambledon Church were saddened to hear of the death of their long- serving Ordained Local Minister (OLM)*, the Rev. David Mace on 28th March, after a long illness.

David was born in Cyprus, as was his wife Jill, and they were both evacuated to South Africa in WW2. He went to school in Guildford and then to Charterhouse, and after National Service in the 4th Royal Tank Regiment he went to Cambridge, studied law, took the Bar and through a fortuitous conversation applied for and was offered a job with BP. David and Jill lived in Camberwell and helped to run The Greenhouse youth club there, where they and their daughter developed strong links with the local community. Afterwards David took the family, now with a 1 month old son, to New York, and over the years this was followed by increasingly responsible jobs in Alaska, the Shetlands, Thailand and China, ending with a directorship of BP.

Significance can be marked in many ways; David was never too busy in his work to fail to give of himself, his time and his faith. When he became an OLM with Busbridge Church in 1995 whilst still at BP, he found a unique avenue opened to him. He found that people started coming to his office in droves for support and to ask for advice about how they could learn from someone of his searing intellect and senior position who was able to have confidence in a Christian faith.

David lived a life of confidence in his Saviour and did not fear, and that gave him a freedom to be himself as his significance developed. His faith was thoroughly integrated into his life. As well as his professional roles, he was also a founder and Trustee of Five Talents, a microfinance development charity, and he was also active in the Anglican Church internationally. More locally, he was deeply committed to Busbridge Infant School as a governor and then Chair of Governors; he was part of the leadership of Busbridge and Hambledon Church and much of the shape of it today is due to David’s long ministry here.

He will be known to many locally through the way in which he conducted baptisms, weddings and funerals in a sensitive, caring and deeply spiritual way. He was a man of deep intellect and unbounded knowledge of Christ, a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, baptising his first great-grandson only in November of last year. It was a great privilege to know him as a colleague and friend, and to lead his memorial service. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Rev Simon Taylor

SALCET Mission Trip to UGANDA

19th – 26th March 2019

Dr Chris Jagger, a trustee of Busbridge based charity, SALCET, made a surprise trip to Uganda in March this year, www.salcet.com prompted by the need to deliver valued dental and medical equipment to the Mata Dental Clinic there. Shipping the equipment was more expensive than taking it personally and fraught with uncertainty regarding customs duties and potential hold ups.

SALCET had worked with dentist Eroni Jjunju in Masaka in 2016. Since then Eroni has been awarded her Fellowship with the International College of Dentists (ICD). A benefit of this membership is that dentists in developing countries receive help for their dentistry from the worldwide dental community. As well as working in the main hospital at Masaka, Eroni runs her own charitable dental clinic (the MATA clinic) for those who cannot afford normal dental fees. She had qualified for a consignment of dental equipment of her choice (value US$ 5,000) from Henry Schein, a multi-national company which distributes healthcare products and services worldwide, to be used for specific projects within her MATA clinic. One of the stipulations is that SALCET partners her in this, which we were very happy to do, as there is an enormous need for dental care and education in the Masaka region.

Delivering the equipment safely to its destination also gave the opportunity to visit the Ssunga Twezimbe 30 ladies group and to assess the progress of the SALCET micro-financed agricultural project. Additionally I was able to carry out a needs assessment of the Masaka referral hospital, visiting the various departments including Accident and Emergency, Eyes, Nose and Throat department (Ugandan ENT!) and the Maternity Unit/Antenatal and women’s health department.

The mission trip was highly appreciated by all the people I visited and was safe, comfortable and joyous. In essence a breath-taking journey, with many photos taken for talks and power point presentations and many notes taken regarding the challenges that still face the rural population and specifically the 30 ladies group. My accommodation was with Pastor Elijah and wife Florence plus son Elisha, who made me so welcome and even gave me cornflakes for breakfast! www.bhcgodalming.org/thebridge Page 26

One highlight was the rapturous reception by the children from the Bright Future Junior School in Bukakata, Masaka with much drumming, dancing and wild welcome including grass skirt wiggling! I had the opportunity to visit their school and give them tennis instruction and donate tennis equipment and teddies for tragedy, all gratefully received. Chris Jagger
