But November is a month when we remember so much more than Guy Fawkes and his unsuccessful attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament, way back in S 1605. Nationally, there is Remembrance Sunday, of course, when we remember those who have died in two World Wars and in many conflicts since, including those which are still happening today. There is a timelessness about the Remembrance rituals: the recital of names – including local heroes – who are remembered precisely because they did not come home; the laying of wreaths; the two-minute silence; the Last Post and Reveille ; and, perhaps most moving of all, the procession of veterans – fewer every year, but still so dignified and determined. Remembering is an important theme in the Bible. And in the church’s calendar, this is a season of remembering. The Christian celebrations of All Saints and All Souls (1 and 2 November respectively) provide an opportunity to commemorate all the faithful departed, both famous and unknown, who have died in the faith of Christ. For many years, in Busbridge & Hambledon, we have held our annual Memorial Service around this time. We invite all those known to us who have been bereaved during the previous two years, as well as others who keep coming back, year after year. The service seems to meet a need for those who attend, and I am always struck by the number of people for whom this is the only time they ever come to church at all. It seems to have a place in their own personal calendar and, for them, it is important to be there … and to remember. This year, along with so much else which has been adversely affected by the fallout from coronavi- rus, we are not able to invite people to be present with us in church; the numbers are too great and would flout the regulations! Instead, on Sunday 1 November, the main morning service in the benefice will be a special service for All Souls. Invitation letters will still be sent out, explaining the situation and inviting people to participate with us online, as the service is live-streamed. It won’t be the same – what is, at the moment?! – but we hope that next year we shall be able to revert to a service at which people can be physically present. In the meantime, when so much is unusual, unsettled, and not as we would like it to be, it is helpful for us to remember that God is faithful … that though our circumstances and the way we do things may change, he does not. As Hebrews 13:8 reminds us: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and for ever. For the time being, Rev Maggie Stirling-Troy will be Acting Chair and Angela Gilmour will be Vice Chair. The plan is for each church to hold its own service that morning and then to walk to Crown Court for a short service at 11:30 (tbc) and presentation that Trinity Trust Team have been performing in school assemblies. For Christmas 2020 we are looking at working with Godalming Town Council to erect a Christmas tree in Crown Court and still some sort of Nativity scene and the Carol service would take place in Wilfred Noyce in the afternoon, with Mayor and Town Councillors and others processing from the Town Council Offices. This Christmas events will be as usual on the 14 December, starting with a Santa Fun run at 10:00 and the Churches Together events and stall starting at 11:00 and with procession and Blessing of the Crib at 15:30 .and Carols in SS Peter and Paul at 16:00.

Refreshments: None on route. Picnic spot on Moushill Down. 1 Walk 3 Moushill Down, Bagmoor Common, Borough Farm and Rodborough Common Directions Walk down Lower Moushill Lane passing Moushill Court on the left. The walled garden of the Manor is on your right. Moushill (mouse infested hill) is one of the oldest known settlements in the area, dating from at least 1263. On the left is the lower part of Moushill Park in which nestles Moushill Court. This was the old house of Moushill Manor, a subsidiary manor of Witley. Robert Court, owner of Witley Mill at Rake and Thursley Mill at Cosford, lived here in the 13th century. During the Civil War Richard Smith lived here. He was responsible for coordinating Parliamentarian support from the southern half of the Godalming Hundred, including Chiddingfold, Haslemere, Thursley and Witley. Down the lane off to the right is Amberley Farm, which served the manor. During the 18th Century, the Stilwell family owned the manor and many improvements were made. It would have been at this time that the gardens and Moushill Park were laid out on the hillside, now largely dug away for the A3. Continue down the lane and up over the A3. After West Moushill, on your left, the metalled road ends.

  • Godalming Footways Report – 2016
    Godalming Neighbourhood Plan Report of the Footways Working Group Spring 2016 Introduction: Our Godalming Footways Group was started as a short-term project – an off-shoot of the Godalming Neighbourhood Plan Transport Group – to survey the state of public footways (as distinct from public footpaths) and identify action needed. Several meetings have been held, which has included use of `The Hub` in Godalming High Street for which we are grateful, with the remainder of activity actually traversing the streets on foot or by wheelchair. In embarking on this project, the situation was made plain that none of us could guarantee any follow-up work happening as a result, but we could at least hope! At our first meeting we were fortunate to be joined by two wheelchair users, fully supportive of the project, and one continued on to help with the survey work. Interestingly, it was they who suggested that as important as it is to consider pedestrians and wheelchair users in this survey work we should also be alert to specific locations on the footway where cycling would be appropriate: We have, therefore, had this in mind when the width and circumstances appeared right, and identified a limited number of such places. We recognise the current economic situation, at the same time as recognising that encouragement of walking and cycling is an investment in health and our environment,whilst contributing to the County Council`s objectives expressed in the `Surrey Transport Plan 2011-2026 Climate Change Strategy`. There is potential for funding to come from a number of different directions, including from `Planning Gain`.

    Who are you sharing Christmas with? The Diocese of Guildford have compiled this directory of support available over the Christmas period in Surrey and North East Hampshire. Thank you to all those groups who have shared information about how they are helping to support people at this time of year. Christmas is a busy time of year, celebrating and spending time with family and friends. However, we know that this time of year can be difficult for some people. They may be lonely – separated from family and friends, or vulnerable for other reasons. Note for Organisers: We have been advised by one lunch organiser that your local Waitrose may be able to provide support generally for groups who are providing lunch for those who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day. Another Source of information is http://communitychristmas.org.uk/ which has a good listing of community events across the UK Please share the information provided with those who may be on their own at Christmas and with those who may be looking for volunteering opportunities.
