The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath. -

This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. -

INDIVIDUALS PRACTISING COMMUNITY: THE CENTRAL PLACE OF INTERACTION IN THE EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF LIMMUD JONATHAN BOYD, BA (HaNS), MA THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF EDUCATION APRIL2013 ABSTRACT In light of growing evidence of exogamy among Jews and diminishing levels of community engagement, the question of how to sustain and cultivate Jewish identity has become a major preoccupation in the Jewish world since the early 1990s. Among the numerous organisations, programmes and initiatives that have been established and studied in response, Limmud, a week-long annual festival of Jewish life and learning in the UK that attracts an estimated 2,500 people per annum and has been replicated throughout the world, remains decidedly under-researched. This study is designed to understand its educational philosophy. Based upon qualitative interviews with twenty Limmud leaders, and focus group sessions with Limmud participants, it seeks to explore the purposes of the event, its content, its social and educational processes, and contextual environment. It further explores the importance of relationships in Limmud's philosophy, and the place of social capital in its practice. The study demonstrates that Limmud's educational philosophy is heavily grounded in the interaction of competing tensions, or polarities, on multiple levels. Major categorical distinctions drawn in educational philosophy and practice, and Jewish and general sociology, are both maintained and allowed to interact. This interaction takes place in a "hospitable and charged" environment - one that is simultaneously safe, respectful and comfortable, whilst also edgy, powerful and challenging - that allows the individual freedom to explore and navigate the contours of Jewish community, and the Jewish community opportunity to envelope and nurture the experience of the individual. -

It is easy to state them clearly and tersely, as follows : The Jews form not merely a religious com- munity but also a nation. There are Jews who sever their national bonds and tend towards the dissolution of the people of Israel in their non-Jewish surroundings. But the large majority of Jews, chiefly in Eastern Europe, desire ardently to preserve their Jewish national identity. Zionism has no meaning for Jews who favour the melting-pot theory. It is the ideal of those who feel themselves to belong to a Jewish nation. FIVE Lydda, 1948 HOW DID ZIONISM ARRIVE IN THE VALLEY OF LYDDA? JUST AS IT ARRIVED in some of Palestine’s other valleys and plains. In the autumn of 1903, after the Sixth Zionist Congress, the Anglo-Palestine Bank purchased 2,330 dunams of land in the village of Haditha for 80,730 francs. Of that area, 1,946 dunams were fertile and flat, while the remaining 384 dunams were hilly and barren. Together they formed a long strip of land that stretched from the silvery olive orchards of the Arab city of Lydda to the low ridge of hills rising from the gray fields of the Lydda Valley toward Jerusalem. The Beit Arif estate became the Ben Shemen estate, one of the first plots of land purchased by Herzl’s Zionist movement in Palestine. Two years later, after exploring several other sites across the country, the civil engineer Nahum Wilbosh decided to establish his Ati4^(Hebrew for “future”) factory in the Lydda Valley. With an investment of 150,000 francs, he bought 100 dunams from the Anglo- Palestine Bank and erected a modem plant to press oil from its orchards and manufacture fine soap from the olive refuse. In its first four years, Atid was a disappointment. The oil was murky, the soap was inferior, and expenses were high. But in its fifth, sixth, and seventh years, Atid prospered. It provided its owners with respectable profits, its workers with decent livings, and its Arab neighbors with extra income from the sale of raw materials to the new Jewish industrial enterprise. -

How we treat each other is a testament to our core values and we are all diminished when we allow fear and ignorance, which often lead to bigotry and violence, to come between us and go unchecked. Tell MAMA www.tellmamauk.org, the only national campaign that monitors, records and supports victims of anti-Muslim hatred, highlighted in their annual report, a range of social impacts caused by anti-Muslim hatred within the United Kingdom. The greatest impact was felt by women, who are visibly Muslim; more than half of victims of in-person or street- based incidents were female. Every day spaces like trains, buses or the streets often feel unsafe for Muslim women, and they are too often worried that they, and their children, will face verbal abuse or even physical violence. As Jewish women, standing shoulder to shoulder with our Muslim cousins, and as mothers, sisters, and crucially as friends, we call upon every candidate in the local elections in May, to commit to addressing violence against Muslim Women, or Gendered Islamophobia. We call upon you, as potential local councillors, firstly to publicly and immediately commit to a clear strategy to protect Muslim women on our streets in our towns and villages, and secondly, to work with Nisa-Nashim (the Jewish/Muslim women’s network in 30 locations nationally) to develop a local policy, to address this issue longer term. -

A FORGOTTEN NINETEENTH-CENTURY PRAYER FOR THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT: ITS MEANING, SIGNIFICANCE, AND SURPRISING AUTHOR --by:Jonathan D. Sarna, Brandeis University In the Jewish year 5609 (1848/49), the pioneering American Hebrew publisher Henry Frank (1804-1868), then newly arrived from Bavaria, produced an Orthodox prayerbook for American Jews enti tled Tefilot Yisra'el. Prayers of Israel. with an English Trans lation.1 The prayerbook aimed to meet the needs of America's burgeoning Central European Jewish community and was the second Ashkenazic prayerbook published at that time, the first being Isaac Leeser's Siddur Divre Tsadikim. The Book of Daily Prayers for Every Day in the Year. According to the Custom of the German and Polish Jews (1848). 2 Frank's prayerbook proved far the more successful of these two, and remained in print into the twentieth century, reissued in more than thirty editions down to 1906. 3 Most of Frank's prayerbook is derivative based, as was Leeser's, on the Hebrew text prepared by Rabbi Wolf Heidenheim in Germany. Instead of the standard Hebrew prayer for the govern ment, however, Frank substituted a totally new Hebrew prayer, never before seen in any prayerbook, and obviously written for an American audience. This marks the first time that a tradi tional American Jewish prayerbook dared to eliminate the well known Hebrew prayer, Hanoten Teshua La-melakhim ("He who gives dominion to kings •.• ") and raises significant questions. Who 1 wrote this prayer? Why was it written? What does it reveal about American Jewish life? In what follows, I offer a transla tion and analysis of this prayer, and propose answers to these and related questions.
