I would like to thank all Board Members for their support and hard work throughout the season. Without your dedication we would not be able to run a competition. This has been one of the most difficult years for our Board, as we enter a new era for our Association whereby we will move some time in 2012 to our new Hockey complex at Greenhills. This new complex will consist of two water-based turfs and a new club house, which will enable our Association to continue to survive and grow Hockey in the Shire. It is important to thank the Turf committee for all their hard work and dedication, and for constantly giving up their time to attend meetings with the Council and other bodies. To Brad, Mick and Bernie we thank you. We also must say thank you to our Treasurer Sylvia Brennan, who has decided to retire after seventeen years doing the Treasurer’s job. Sylvia has put in a fantastic effort over these years and on behalf of the whole Association we thank you for your dedication. I would like to congratulate all players who represented our Association at Metro (SWHL), Veterans (SWHL) and State, and underage State Championships. To our Under 15 team we congratulate you on making the finals. To be able to field all of these teams takes a lot of hard work and dedication by a number of Coaches, Managers and Umpires. This year we again entered three open teams in the Sydney Women’s Hockey League. Our number one team was promoted to second division after being minor premiers in third division in 2010. This was a lot stronger competition for our players, and hopefully they will have learnt a lot and be stronger in 2012. Congratulations to the three coaches Wayne, Karen and Lynne and to all the Managers. To the three Veterans teams who played in the State Championships congratulations to all the players. All three teams made the semis, one team went on to win their division, and one team went on to be runners-up - well done ladies. Congratulations to all teams that made our Association Semis, Finals, and Grand Finals and to the eventual winners, well done. As most of you are aware the combined First Grade competition (SEPL) will no longer exist in 2012. We are endeavouring to arrange a new competition with Campbelltown. I would like to thank those people who served on the SEPL committee. Next year will still be a difficult year for the incoming Board as we come closer to moving to our new hockey complex, and making this viable for all of our players. We can only achieve the end results if we have the support of all our players and club officials. HNSW are still looking at making changes in 2012, but as yet we do not know how, or whether, such changes may impact on our Association. We need to continue to look at ways to increase our numbers both in juniors and seniors. We will continue to look at this and hopefully will achieve success. Once again thank you to all Board members and volunteers who helped make the season a success. Remember hockey should be about FUN, FRIENDSHIP AND FRATERNITY I hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year – keep safe. See you all next year.

CLUB COMPETITIONS

Competition was conducted across four grades of Seniors, four of Juniors, one of Modified (Sevens) and two non-competitive grades of Sevens and Minkey. The Senior 1st Grade was the South East Premier League managed in conjunction with Eastern Districts Women's Hockey Association. All Senior Grades were administered through the Fixtures Committee as were the Junior Grades, as there was no Junior Convenor. The 2nd Grade Senior competition was played primarily on turf at Sutherland and at Kyeemagh, although occasional games were also at Moorebank due to the shortage of available Turf fields throughout the district. The 3rd and 4th Grade played some of their games on the Sutherland turf but the majority were played at Jenola, on the grass. In addition, due to low team numbers in both 3rd and 4th Grade, the bulk of their competition was combined, being split at the end for the finals series.

South East Premier League – SEPL Season 2011 saw the fourth year of the ‘South East Premier League’, SEPL competition, the joint venture of a combined 1st grade competition with our neighbouring association, EDWHA. SEPL continued in 2011 to be a very high standard, 8 team 1st grade competition played on a Saturday afternoon. Five of the SEPL teams were SSWHA based, Sutho Blues (2 teams), Cronulla RSL, Sharks and Seacliff. The SSWHA based teams showed their strength in the competition, with both Major semi final spots going to SSWHA teams and ultimately it was a grand final played between two SSWHA based teams as well. The Grand Final was fought out between both Sutherland (1) and Sutherland (2), which showed the strength and dominance of the local Club. Sutherland (1) took out the title comfortably, winning 7-1, a fitting end for the Minor Premiers and form team of the season. The bringing together of two separate Associations with two different sets of rules, ideas and expectations is not without challenges, and unfortunately this season has seen SEPL discontinued for the time being. This comes as a big disappointment to all the Clubs involved as the competition itself was highly regarded amongst the Clubs and players, and ultimately it will be the players who miss out. Thanks must go to the SEPL Committee, made up of two officials each from SSHWA (Susie Wiggins and Alison Banks) and EDWHA (Briony Nilan and Tanya Arathoon) for their tireless work and dedication to running SEPL, in at times difficult circumstances.

Second Grade Seniors This competition was slightly smaller than previous years with only 7 teams, played entirely on turf, but was still very competitive, with any team capable of an upset win on any particular week. During the course of the season Bosco Beavers proved they were far more consistent, taking out the minor premiership, with RSL Rockettes slotting into second place and then a group of four teams that were continually swapping positions. For the second year, the composition of the finals was not determined until the completion of the final round. The semi-finals were tough matches, with the results similar to the rest of the season, in that Bosco proved too strong for RSL, but SuthoBlues upsetting Seacliff, in normal time. The Preliminary Final was an upset with SuthoBlues stepping up another level to compete with RSL, and then using their loss in extra-time the previous year to fight through to a win this year and a position in the Grand-final. The Grand-final was a tight game between the minor premiers and the fourth placed team, but there was really little between them. Bosco did get off to a good start and held a slim lead during most of the game, to take out a much deserved Premiership.

Combined Third/Fourth Grade Seniors This grade originally started with four teams in 3rd Grade and four teams in 4th Grade, but the withdrawal of the 4th Grade Sharks team in the 1st Round forced this to be a combined competition. By far the dominant team of this grade was the Tartans Tarts, who only lost a single game, and that was when they only had 7 players, and still only lost 1-0! As for the rest of the grade, it did resolve itself into two separate groups, although Seacliff was originally registered in 4th Grade, and SuthoBlues registered in 3rd Grade.

Third Grade Seniors Finals The Semi-finals were played in the same fashion as the rest of the season, with Tartans defeating RSL in a close game and Seacliff taking out the match with Sharks. In the Preliminary Final RSL gave a determined display to overwhelm Seacliff. The Grand-final could have been a mirror of earlier games, but RSL came out determined to take the title, and while Tartans did take the lead, it was never certain until the end, with RSL still trying to take it to extra-time. In the end Tartans Tarts took out a well deserved Premiership.

Fourth Grade Seniors Finals Because there were only three teams in the 4th Grade group, the major semi-final was between the top two teams, Bosco Barracudas and SuthoBlues Blue Jags, and Tartans Creme Puffs having a bye through to the Preliminary final. Bosco were far too strong in their semi-final, rolling over SuthoBlues easily. In the Preliminary final SuthoBlues came out to determined to win and put in a much better performance to move into the Grand- final. Unfortunately for Sutho, Bosco came determined to win, scoring 2 goals in the first 10 minutes, and while Sutho attempted to fight back they were never able to make up the difference, allowing Bosco to finish the season strongly and take out the Premiership.

JUNIOR CLUB COMPETITIONS

The Junior Competition was conducted across four grades Juniors, one of Modified (Sevens) and two non-competitive grades of Sevens and Minkey. Due to the position of Junior Convenor being vacant, the competition was administered directly by the Fixtures Convenor and by the Grading Committee. The 1st Grade competition was played entirely on turf, primarily at Sutherland on Friday nights, while Grades 2 to 4 were played primarily at Jenola on the grass on Saturday mornings, with a small number of games played on the Turf at Sutherland. All the Modified grades were played on grass at Jenola on Saturday mornings.

First Grade Juniors Like last year, there were four teams in this competition with SuthoBlues, RSL and Bosco returning from the previous year and Seacliff promoted from the previous years 2nd Grade. While the teams may have been from the same clubs, there were a number of differences in players, due to age limit restrictions and other personal commitments. Despite these changes, during the course of the season the same rivalries as previous years emerged with SuthoBlues and RSL battling for the top of the table, with the other teams enjoying a fierce competition between themselves and yet also regularly upsetting the higher placed teams. Towards the end of the season there were a number of issues with the turf at Sutherland which caused some disruption to the draw and forced all Friday night matches to be moved to other venues, in particular Moorebank. The major semi-final was an extremely tough and exciting match with both SuthoBlues and RSL throwing everything at the other, finishing up as 1-1 at full time, with SuthoBlues just missing out on a goal before the whistle. RSL came out in extra-time far more determined and taking out the match in the first period. The minor semi-final saw Seacliff come out determined to win from the start and while Bosco had chances, Seacliff were convincing winners. The Preliminary Final was a tough struggle for the first twenty minutes, but when SuthoBlues got on top they kept up the pressure and ran away as clear winners. The Grand-final was played at Kyeemagh in almost torrential rain, making for difficult playing conditions. Unfortunately for RSL, SuthoBlues continued on with their form from the previous week, ignoring the conditions and ran away to one of the biggest Grand-final wins in the last few seasons. While the final result reflected the game it did not reflect the even competition during the season.

Second Grade Juniors With only five teams in the grade it was always likely clear that most teams would make the finals. In fact, while during the season Tartans and RSL drew away from the other teams, most games were fairly close with Tartans or RSL picking up the win by only a goal or two. The only difference to this was SGHS, who, unfortunately were often on the end of big scores but were unable to score themselves. The semi-finals were a reasonable reflection of the games during the season in that for the major semi-final RSL were the only team able to defeat the Tartans, and were able to do so again, while in the minor semi-final SuthoBlues and Bosco played a good game, which in the end went to Sutho. The Preliminary Final between Sutho and Tartans also went to form with Tartans proving far too strong. The Grand-final proved to be a tough contest with the difference being in defence, with both sides having opportunities to score, but ending with only a single goal to Tartans separating the two teams.

Third Grade Juniors Within this grade there was one standout team, the Tartans Titans who were undefeated during the whole of the regular season. Among the other teams there was a reasonably close competition which gradually settled into the order Bosco, Seacliff, SuthoBlues, Sharks and SGHS, although the final result was not determined until the final round. From week to week the results were unpredictable, with even SGHS able to pull off a surprising upset during the season. The semi-finals both came out with the expected results, although the Tartans vs Bosco match was probably closer than expected, and the Seacliff vs SuthoBlues was a bigger margin than previous games. The Preliminary Final was a very tight match between Bosco and Seacliff, which could have gone either way but in the end was taken out by Bosco through a single goal. The Grand-final looked to be a replay of the major semi-final, with Tartans being the only Junior Minor Premier to go directly through, and Bosco having fought two tough matches to also make it through. In fact it did turn out the be just as tough as the previous match, but this time it was Bosco who picked up the sole goal to take out the premiership, being the only team to come from second place to take out the title.

Fourth Grade Juniors This was the biggest full field grade with seven teams, although as Danebank were only available for part of the season, scheduling meant that most teams only had a single bye. In addition, to ensure that the results were fair, Danebank played every team at least once. Again in this grade a single team stood out, being RSL Tricky Sticks, with Tartans Cobras being a close second and Danebank coming in third on adjusted score, and only losing to RSL. Among the other four teams there was a reasonable struggle for fourth place with Seacliff finally taking the spot. The semi-finals pitted the two top teams against each other, and as is often the way, the second place Tartans team edging out the top placed RSL, while Danebank convincingly defeated Seacliff. The Preliminary Final again stayed true to the earlier results in that RSL stepped up to defeat Danebank, to book a meeting with Tartans again. The Grand-final was an exciting match, with neither side able to score, despite good attacks. Both teams showed great determination, and at the end of normal time the score was nil all, and despite two further periods of extra-time there was still no score, resulting in joint premiership for both RSL and Tartans, the only one for the season.

Seven A Juniors As always, this grade had the largest number consisting of eight teams, although with Danebank only available for part of the season, there were a number of periods when there were only seven competing. As with 4th Grade the Danebank team was schedule to compete against all teams at least once. There were two teams, Tartans Anacondas and Bosco Blueberries, who stood out from all the others, being separated by a single game. Among the other teams, they fell into a reasonable order, with Danebank taking third and SuthoBlue Gnomes fourth. Due to the large number of teams and the number of games lost during the season due to rain, it was decided that aside from the normal finals, the lower four teams would play out a Consolation Finals series. The primary semi-finals had unexpected results, with Tartans and Bosco drawing, while SuthoBlues defeated Danebank in extra-time despite Danebank having the majority of the opportunities. The consolation semi-finals went more along the expected results with Tartans defeating Bosco and Seacliff defeating Sharks all in normal time. Both Preliminary Finals results were as expected from the earlier games in the season, with Bosco defeating SuthoBlues in the primary game and Bosco defeating Seacliff in the consolation game. The Grand-finals were both exciting matches, both almost replays of the earlier semi-final matches, although in the primary game both Tartans and Bosco scored goals, with Tartans taking out the match in normal time. For the consolation final, the result was the same as the semi-final, however, this time it had to go to extra-time.

Seven B Juniors and Minkeys As always, there were entertaining matches in these two non-competitive grades, with up to ten teams in Seven B, two from Bosco, three from Danebank, two from Tartans and one each from RSL, Sharks and Seacliff and seven teams in Minkeys, two from Bosco, two from Sharks and one each from RSL, Seacliff and Tartans.

As with the other grades, the Danebank teams were only available during second and third school terms, meaning that there were a number of weeks that the Seven B competition only had seven teams. In addition as the matches were played on the grass, a number of games were washed out, and to make up for this, their season was extended by a week and so were played at the same time as the competitive grades’ semi-finals.

“A BIT OF HISTORY”

A Dark Night but a Win For Women

At 7.15pm on Monday 1st June 1942 a grim-faced group of Sutherland Shire Councillors began their fortnightly meeting at Sutherland Council Chambers. Shire President Cr Bingham presided and present were Clrs Lawrence, Coleman, Shaw, Dallimore, Burrell and Sandow. It was wartime and much of the meeting was devoted to plans for the evacuation of residents in the event of an attack. A motion was carried without debate that in the event of an air raid a council meeting would immediately adjourn. And the councillors had good reason for these drastic steps. Less than 17 hours before this meeting four Japanese midget submarines had attacked Sydney Harbour. The submarines had been sunk but 21 Royal Australian Naval ratings had paid the supreme sacrifice. War had come very brutally to Sydney. Where would it strike next? The coastal suburbs of Sutherland Shire were thought very likely targets. But amidst these life and death issues one small item was passed by council that night. Gannons Road playing field at Caringbah, later to be known as Jenola, was approved for women’s use only. This had been a pet project of Clr Reg Dallimore in his desire to see women’s sport given a place in the Shire. The Cronulla Observer (5.6.42) reported; “…one Councilor went home happy on Monday after having secured the Gannons Oval for its exclusive use as a women’s playground” In due course the other dangers passed and are now forgotten, as were the other decisions made at that sombre meeting. All but one that is. The women’s playing field at Gannons Road has retained the status given it that grim night long ago. Its first tenant, women’s hockey, is still there.

CLUB REPORTS

BOSCO HOCKEY CLUB

Fourteen teams took the field for 2011 which began slowly but ended as our best year ever, with four grand final victories. Marvellous what new style shirts do! A new website (www. boscohockey.com.au ), an influx of players in the modified age groups, a trivia night, the frustrations of wet weather, successful presentation functions and a couple of great senior grand final parties were highlights…… and there was also the hockey. Seniors The Beavers led the Second Grade competition from the start to finish minor and major premiers. An experienced and dedicated squad comprising eight girls who began with the club as juniors in the early ‘90’s, Beavers worked hard for their premiership.

Bosco Beavers

Fourth Grade Barracudas fielded many of the mums and hit its straps to convincingly take out the finals series. Two teams entered the Eastern District all turf competition in anticipation of our own fields at Cronulla and Third Grade finished premiers. Juniors Bosco contested the four grades of juniors making the finals in First (Rebels), Second (Ballistics) and Third (Blazers) grades. Fourth Grade (Bees) finished strongly but out of the four. In the last moments of the Third Grade grand final the Blazers slotted the only goal of the match to take out the title, a popular result with the large crowd.

Modified Two teams in each of the 7A (Blueberries and Rascals), 7B (Bullets and Thundersticks) and Minkey divisions had enjoyable seasons. The 7A Blueberries made the Grand Final and the Rascals the consolation Grand Final and the 7B teams performed commendably. There are some stars of the future already making their mark in these grades. The Minkey teams (Bunnies and Monkeys) once again were amongst the keenest players in the club followed by the keenest spectators. Katelyn Brady deservedly won the club’s Junior Club Person of the Year Award.

On the Sidelines It takes over 50 people each week to get the teams on the field. Many thanks to these coaches, managers, umpires, canteen staff, executive, committee members as well as the mums, dads, husbands, friends, pets who cheer us along and then hear the match replayed again and again all the way home. Our club convenors deserve special thanks Taryn Brady (Umpires), Karen Bardsley (7’s/Minkey), Vicki Vickery (Juniors), Lawrie Daly (Seniors), Gayle Tregoning (Registrar), Gary Tucker (Treasurer and Sponsors), Charles Jaji (Webmaster) our executive and committee. Secretary Robyn Brady completed five years at the helm as secretary to keep the whole operation running smoothly at all times. Cronulla RSL entered three senior teams in the SEPL and SSWHA competitions during the 2011 season and five junior teams in the SSWHA comps. All teams played a good standard of hockey with the second and third grade senior teams and first, second and fourth grade junior teams all progressing to the finals. Our two minkeys and sevens sides play in competitions without finals and both sides had great seasons learning new skills from very experienced coaches who still play or have recently played in our senior sides. Several of our junior players progressed through to senior sides during the year and made the transition from juniors to seniors very smoothly. A lot of credit must go to both our junior and senior coaches for imparting the skills to enable the girls to do this. We had an active committee during the year which helped spread the workload of running the club, organizing teams, club finances and social events. In addition, getting five junior teams on the field each weekend involves twelve to fifteen parents and older players acting as coaches, managers and umpires. The Club would like to express its thanks and appreciation to all these volunteer workers. We would also like to thank SSWHA and SEPL for running excellent competitions and Cronulla RSL Club for their continuing support throughout the year

SEACLIFF HOCKEY CLUB

2011 was again a great year for Seacliff Hockey Club. We strive to create a culture for our members of fun and the spirit of a team sport, but also we encourage our players to achieve the best they possibly can, within any season, within any aspect of hockey. Whether it be umpiring, coaching, or playing, nothing is unachievable given time and effort and this year has been no different.

Given the current financial climate, sport is sometimes the one thing a family has to forgo to save money. Though hockey is still one of the cheapest sports to register in, it can be a tough sell to a family of why they should still play sport. We are proud of this culture we are building where families have said their kids will play no matter what and this has seen an increase in numbers for 2011. In juniors we had a full minkey team, two sevens, a 4th and 3rd grade team and a 1st grade team. The increase in boys has been great as with the age limit increasing at SSWHA level, we were able to go and market ourselves, as any ‘small business’ would, and show the local boys it’s not just a girls game. Printed flyers were sent to the local schools participating in the school sessions conducted by Ros Grey with interesting hockey facts and fun (and there are still more boys who want to play next year!). This is great news and can only mean great things for the sport as a whole. We look forward to introducing this program into more local schools next year in the hope of bringing more kids to the game.

Seacliff Minkeys

Our senior players had the best season yet. We may not have made or won grand finals but our team combinations have strengthened the club base and with new members coming into join last year’s players we are very happy with what we have been able to achieve. Many of our 1st and 2nd grade players are also juniors, or young enough to play juniors. The depth of talent and potential is something we are proud of and we make sure we are able to funnel those talents into the teams playing at levels that best suit and challenge these young players. It’s exciting for our coaches to watch them exceed their expectations and see their own level of enjoyment increase as the season progresses. A big thank you has to go to our coaches and managers. We have a mix of parents and players coaching, with some coaching teams with no kids or family members playing in that team. This is a massive commitment of time, and in some cases travel, so we say thank you to them. We are also looking to have our 2012 coaches and managers complete their Community Coaching accreditation at the beginning of the season, to help them take on and feel confident in this role.

Our second thank you goes to our umpires. Week in and week our umpire co-ordinator Kirsty Bassingthwaite had the unenviable task of sourcing umpires for games. This is one of hardest jobs in the entire club commitment, and as any club will agree, umpires are a scarce breed. Up against conflicting games, different locations and school/work commitments, it is sometimes a last minute call and even the best laid plans go awry. But with the interest in umpiring within Seacliff growing we hope to focus on bringing more umpires through the system, and are again encouraging as many players next year to complete their Community Umpire accreditation and build our crew for 2012. Thank you to our 2011 Sponsors, and with government grant funding we have been able to put a retractable net between our training surfaces, which will allow us to better utilise our training facilities. Thanks to all our families who sold chocolates this year, so popular we ran out of boxes to sell… 2011 has also been successful for many of our members at representative level. With around 20 members playing at SSWHA level some of our players have played in some very successful teams. Congratulations are extended to: Leah Fussell, Ellouise Paine, Madelaine Rust, Ciara McHardy, Denver Richards, Kiah Whiteside, Bianca Duncan, Liz Astill, Michaela Golds, Erinn Woan, Nicole Janes, Monique Clift, Kate McAughey, Lauren McAughey, Shari Osgood, Tamara Wilke, Michelle Arcidiacono, Rachel Mannion, Cheyne-Lee Bassingthwaighte, Karen Southwell. Michaela Golds was also selected in the U15s City Team and NSW U15s State Squad.

Seacliff 1st Grade (SEPL)

The 2011 Dot Symonds Award was awarded to Cheyne-Lee Bassingthwaighte. Cheyne- Lee does a lot of umpiring duties for Seacliff and has been asked on several occasions to be the SSWHA umpire at carnivals and this has been a credit to the work she has put into her accreditation, this year being successfully badged.

Our Junior Club Person of the Year was Erinn Woan for her contribution to the Club as coach and player and also her participation at an Association level. And our Senior Club Person of the Year was Shaunagh Corfield for her coaching commitments on a senior and junior level and guidance for our young players. Congratulations are also in order to Shaunagh as she and her husband Geoff celebrate the birth of their son. As the Association looks to having the new turfs come into play at some stage in 2012 we are looking forward, as a Club, to providing our members a safe, consistent and state of the art playing surface. We certainly look forward to not only training on turf but playing on it as well. We thank the Turf Committee and Board for the hard work. No doubt when the first whistle is blown all will breathe a sigh of relief and we can get on with the business of playing hockey. We look forward to seeing you all out there on the pitch in 2012!

SHARKS HOCKEY CLUB

Third Grade Seniors Third grade had a great season this year making it to the semi-finals against Seacliff. It was a tough game and the team were unlucky to come 2nd. The girls notched up some great wins, some nail bitting draws and some losses. We experienced it all and really enjoyed playing for each other. The Club would like to thank Will Harris who did a fantastic job as manager. Thanks to his efforts and the enjoyment of the team, everyone is excited and raring to go for next season. Congratulations to Natasha Nielson who was voted Best and Fairest and to Catherine Whitehead who was the team’s Players Player.

Kirsty Breakspere makes a break

Second Grade Seniors Second grade had a tough season but despite this, thoroughly enjoyed playing on the turf and having fun. Again, the girls played well all season with some close games resulting in draws and narrow losses and some lovely games winning comfortably with some beautiful hockey being played. Thank you to Amy Knox who was the brilliant manager and congratulations to Marie Marcinkewcyz for Best and Fairest and Bronte Della-Bona for Players Player. First Grade Seniors With a new look team, new shirts and a new coach it took a while for the team to click as a unit. When we did, it made for some lovely hockey. All the girls got on really well and enjoyed playing in the SEPL competition. The team came strong in the end winning six games in a row. All our hard work had paid off and we would like to thank John Hollyman for taking on head coach and getting us very close to playing in a semi-final. Thank you to Alyssia Marsden as our manager and congratulations to Julia Phillips for Best and Fairest and Lisa Pemberton for Players Player.

Sharks Hockey Juniors The Junior Sharks once again had a great season. This year we fielded 3 junior full field teams, one 7A team, one 7B team and two minkey teams. This season we registered many new players who all enjoyed their introduction to hockey. Minkey This year we fielded two minkey teams and most of the players were new to hockey this season. A good time was had by all, they all experienced a few wins, a few draws and a few losses. Each week they showed up with a smile on their face and eager to play. The enthusiasm our juniors girls Nat and Ash showed each week certainly rubbed of on the young Sharkies. The lollies at the end of the game ensured they came back each week for more. 7B Tiger Sharks We fielded one 7B team this season which included three new players. The girls had a great time and worked together really well as a team. The girls were coached by Lara who took on the task with great enthusiasm. They were definitely the big improvers and it was a delight to watch them improve their skills and understanding of the game as the season progressed. 7A Hammerhead Sharks Our happy Hammerhead 7A team also had a great season. They played very well all season and the score line on many occasions did not reflect the game. The team had a tough time getting the ball in the goals but their skills developed under the guidance of their coach Alison. The whole team had a great time every Saturday morning and their enthusiasm was contagious. They had a great season and are all keen to come back again next year. Junior 4 Killer Sharks The Killer Sharks started off the season with a lively mix of new and old faces, some of whom were playing full field hockey for the very first time. With a few wins under their belt to kick off the first few rounds, the girls learnt to work together as a team and had plenty of fun doing it. Dedicated players and parents alike braved the cold, wet and windy weather every Monday night for training. As the season drew on the effort and hard work paid off, with the Killer Sharks playing out a spectacular game in Round 9 against the future Joint Premiers, the Tartan Cobras, and smashing them 2-0. Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated as the season continued, and rained out training sessions and games led to a disjointed second half of the season. Nevertheless, all of the girls continued to play with a smile on their face and a bounce in their step, with every single player showing a marked improvement in skill and ability to work as a team by the end of the season. Junior 4 Great White Sharks The Great White Sharks took on a big challenge with many of the players stepping up to the full field for the first time. The team consisted of many first time players and players that were quite young. Being all new to full field hockey learning about positions, where to stand at the start of the game and what to do on corners meant these young players were kept on their toes and endured a steep learning curve. Playing the full field left many of these young players with bright red faces at the end of each game. The team improved greatly over the course of the season and even had a few wins. They will be well placed to have a great season next year as they all come back a little bit wiser and stronger. They showed true sportsmanship if they had a win or a loss. Junior 3 Saw Sharks The Saw Sharks moved up a grade after finishing as joint premiers in 2010. They had another great season and were unlucky to finish outside the top four. They had some great games and stepped up to the challenge of playing in the Junior 3 competition. They also experienced a disjointed second half of the season with the weather playing havoc with many of their training sessions. The girls continued to improve and their enthusiasm was as evident now, as they enter their teenage years, as it was when they were minkeys. These girls have played together since the minkey years and have formed such a strong bond. It is great to see how they are growing into lovely young women who love their hockey. At the end of this season we say goodbye to their great coach Marie who is heading to WA and we wish her good luck in the wild, wild west.

SUTHERLAND WOMEN’S HOCKEY CLUB

As women's convenor for the first time, I found the 2011 season to be challenging, interesting, and enjoyable and I have learnt a great deal. This season our third grade Stingers team wanted a break from playing on the grass, so they did not play in the SSWHA comp. The Blue Jags struggled each week to find a team and with the help from our wonderful junior girls, managed to make the 4th grade Grand Final and can be very proud of their efforts in finishing in second position.

Blue Jags

Wildcats

Cougars and Wildcats once again shaped up in second grade and gave each other plenty in the Sutho v Sutho games. Wildcats in extra time of their Final, found some extra (I’m told - by the oldies) and made it to their Grand Final. Unfortunately the Cougars just missed out on making the Semi Finals but had a great season. The Wildcats put up a great effort in their Grand Final but had to be content with second place this year. Premier League (SEPL) was another very successful year for Sutho as both of the Sutho teams played each other in the Grand Final, which was a very tough and entertaining game. Great effort Sutho as we have won SEPL every year since its inception in 2008 and both of our Sutho teams have played each other in three out of the four Grand Finals. Sutho had many talented representative players this season that included: Australian and NSW Vets- Kirsty McIntosh, NSW NHL- Yasmine Phillips, NSW U21 and U18- Hannah Burrell and Cara Simpson, EDWHA Opens- Rebekah Hindmarsh, Tiana Mamacan, Alexandra Noy, Georgia Soares & Yasmine Phillips, EDWHA U18- Korina Johnson, Tiana Mamacan, Alexandra Noy, Georgia Soares and Laura Wiggins and SSWHA Opens – Kara Ward. A big Thank You goes to Mark Brookfield from www.sunriseaccessories.com who have once again sponsored our women's teams, and is shown on our wonderful new players shirts.

Sutho Blues Junior Girls The 2011 hockey season has come to an end, with our first grade girls winning the grand final on a miserable August winter’s night. The season for all teams was successful, with all four teams achieving a place in the finals series. We had four teams registered this year in the 7A, 3rd grade, 2nd grade and 1st grade competitions. To our players, congratulations on your team and individual performances. To our wonderful coaches who volunteer to coach the girls, a huge thank you!. Without the dedication and commitment of the coaches there would be no hockey. To Phil Rowling and Gemma Yeomans , Bek Hindmarsh and Kasie Bingham, Shane Fraser, Katie Hammond and Sarah Rose, thank you for your enthusiasm and hours of work you have given to each team, with your commitment at training and game days. Thank you to the team managers, without you the teams would be lost. Thanks Frank, Kath, Mitch and Bec. To the girls who undertake the challenging job of umpiring, thank you. Umpiring is not as easy as it seems, especially when everyone on the sidelines is an expert. To our new players this year, I hope you have enjoyed and learnt a lot from your first year of hockey and are eager to return. To our older girls who leave our junior competition, we wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Thank you also goes to the junior girl committee. Frank Crawford who has put in hours of work helping the junior girls competition - without his support this season would not have been so successful. Mitch Fraser who organizes and supports our umpires each week. Debbie Dodd who also supports our umpires each week. To all the parents for the support you give the girls and the club, thank you. Let's make the 2012 season bigger and better than 2011.

TARTANS WOMEN’S HOCKEY CLUB

Membership Membership – 127 Juniors and Seniors Tartans has a larger proportion of Junior hockey players. The great challenge is, and always has been, to hold these hockey players against all the drive to attract players, from the other competitive non hockey sporting bodies. The Board This year, as in previous years, Tartans has an inclusive, strong and enthusiastic board made up of parents and players. Sponsors Continuing sponsors enabled the club to expand out support base for the players. Uniform Changes In 2011 In the Year 2011, Tartans had an upgraded uniform. The changed uniform, eliminated the plain white shirt, and gave the Tartans club more distinct recognition. The new striping of the Tartans shirt is along the lines of the shirts worn by the Sutherland Shire Women’s Hockey Association representative players. The Teams Only one Minkey team, (four Minkey teams on 2010), four teams of Sevens, three teams of Junior players and three senior teams made up the full complement of Tartans players in 2011. The gradings for 2011 were; Minkey, 7A, 7A, 7B, 7B, J2, J3, J4, S2, S3, and S4. The Grade Winners The J2 team were Minor Premiers and won their Grand Final. J3 Team were minor Premiers but lost in the Grand Final. J4 team were drawn after extra time in the Grand Final, and were declared Joint Premiers The 7A Team, (Anacondas), won their Grand Final and the 7A team, (Angels), also won their Grand Final which was deemed a “Consolation” grand Final. The 7B teams do not participate in the final series. In the Senior competition, Tartans had only one of its three senior teams in a Grand Final. It was the S3 team, which had led the point score for the whole season and won the title of Premiers for 2011.

Tartans Tarts 3rd Grade Premiers

Coaches and Managers Like most clubs, the Tartans club looks to its players with some years of experience, to pass on that experience to the younger teams. So we have Juniors and Seniors coaching Juniors, Sevens, and Minkies. The system works very well. Mostly the managing of the Junior teams is carried out by enthusiastic parents, and the general club enthusiasm carries over into the representative sides, where the same parents are both organisers and managers for SSWHA Rep sides. The Umpires Tartans has a large base of graded umpires, and other players who are on the cusp of obtaining a grading. The group of young players who are awaiting assessment for a grading are already umpiring at lower levels, and are watched and coached on a weekly basis by senior umpire members of the Tartans club. Apart from the willingness to take on the umpiring roles by the players, the mentoring by two particular senior players, and the teaching and coaching role by those senior players, is the critical factor in the success in this area. The SSWHA could be seen to be very pleased with the contribution of the coaches and mentors in umpiring within this club. The Year 2012 Tartans would seek to hold all of its players from the 2011 season and would aim to expand its membership by say ten per cent for 2012. With an upgraded uniform and the enthusiasm of existing players, achieving the increase in membership should be achievable. Player Drawing Area About seventy six per cent of the Tartans players reside in the area of the Sutherland Shire bounded by Kirrawee in the west, Kurnell in the east, the River in the south, and Taren Point in the north. A further thirteen per cent are drawn from outside this area but within the Sutherland Shire. Eleven per cent of the Tartans membership is from outside the Sutherland shire. Jenola Hockey Fields are central to some eighty five per cent of the Tartans player profile. An Expanded Competition With the expected turf fields at Greenfields, coming on line in the 2012 year, the SSWHA will be expanding its profile to embrace the wider community. The year 2012 will see the Sutherland Shire Women’s Hockey Association, (after 70 years under that name), become Sutherland Shire Hockey Association. Similarly Tartans Women’s Hockey Club, again one of the oldest clubs in the SSWHA, will of necessity, become, Tartan’s Hockey Club. Tartans will then be in a position to compete with all other clubs in the expanded Association, none of which currently have the exclusivity in their club names that currently exists in the name of the Tartans Women’s Hockey Club.

SYDNEY WOMEN’S HOCKEY LEAGUE

Sutherland 1 - ML2 Well, what a challenge 2011 turned out to be. After winning ML3 in 2010 expectations were high that 2011 would be another successful season, albeit in the higher ML2 grade. After promoting some of the younger 2010 ML4 girls and an encouraging draw in the first game of the season, times got tough and frustration set in. At the mid point of the season all we had to show for our efforts was 1 win and 1 draw. A coaching restructure and the arrival of our US import Meghan Cici seemed to re- invigorate the team mid season; this resulted in three wins in row and a confident competitive team. From my point of view a huge bonus for the long term future is the team’s youth. The second half of the season was played with four players under the age of 15 and another seven players under the age of 18. Add a couple of “old heads” who took leadership and the younger girls followed with enthusiasm and pride. I’d like to thank Julianne Clift for her efforts as the manager. With all of the mid season turmoil and a change of coach, the team (and club for that matter) could have fallen apart. It was only through Julianne’s efforts that each team continued to function week to week. Thank you also to the rest of the coaching and support staff of both the ML4 and ML6 teams.

Well done to our team for remaining positive throughout year and particularly at the time of change. The results in the second half of the year were outstanding, the team demonstrated they belong in ML2 and can compete with anyone. All the best. The team; Meghan Cicchi, Monique Clifts, Michaela Golds, Katie Hammond, Clare Johnson, Melanie Kassem, Emma Kavanagh, Aimee Lauc, Sally-Ann Legge, Jordan Parker, Yolanda Thomas, Erin Walsh, Kara Ward, Jessica Williams, Renee Williams, Erin Woan.

Sutherland 2 - ML4 What a year it has been! The shuffling of coaching staff and team re-structures for various reasons. 2nd Grade started and finished this season on a strong note. We had players move up to 1st Grade, players move away, players who unfortunately had long term injuries and then we had players who sometime just didn’t turn up. Despite all the turmoil we came home strong finishing in 5th place overall. Basically the few lulls we had during the season cost us a position in the top four. Lucky for this team we had a few “old heads” who took leadership and the younger girls followed with enthusiasm. The team particularly in the last four games put it to the other teams showing that Sutherland is a force to be reckoned with. Our younger girls really hit their straps during the balance of the season and if they can start next year how they finished off this year then we will be looking at ML3 in the not too distant future. I’d like to thank Jeremy Keneally for taking on the role as an assistant coach. I couldn’t have finished off the season without him. Jeremy travelled to training and games from Bargo (1.5 hour drive each way). His commitment to the team was greatly appreciated and I believe Jeremy is keen to take on the role permanently next season.

Well, lucky for us ladies we are in it for the fun and a bit of fitness...... Needless to say it doesn’t mean that we didn’t put an effort in each fortnight. Some evenings we struggled with the bare 11 which makes it difficult especially when players are carrying injuries. One looks toward the dugout only to find it vacant so you soldier on. Most of the opposition teams were very well drilled, had a coach, have been playing together for a number of years and took it far more seriously than we, a shame for them really. Although coming in at 6th place our biggest loss was 4-nil. We were competitive throughout all of our matches with the majority of games being a loss of only 1 goal. Most of all our team showed sportsmanship on the field and displayed the real attitude to the SHWL competition, and that it is for enjoyment and companionship to be shared with your team mates and opposition alike. (Let’s be honest who wants to be serious at 9.30pm on a weeknight in the freezing cold or pouring rain!) Thank you to all the ladies who played and/or filled in from our other teams, it was greatly appreciated. A big thank you to Di Watkins who made sure we had players every fortnight and processed all the paperwork, emails, etc..... MVP – Karen Southwell

SWHL Veterans Division Two When we celebrated winning Division 3 in 2010 we knew we would pay the price in 2011 … and we did. We were promoted to Division 2, and for a number of reasons we were not too happy. From playing weekly on a Monday for years and years and …. we had to move to Wednesday nights, once a fortnight. Old people often have trouble adapting mentally, not just physically, and we were no exception. Players struggled to get off work in time for the early games, there were clashes with work, school and social commitments, all of which had been built around playing on a Monday. To add to our woes, for the first time in living memory our goalie Teresa only managed to play two games due to injury, and we were very fortunate to have Julie take over this role. We also were missing Heather, who had ‘gone back to school’ and took the year off, but welcomed Lyn back as a full-time player. A big ‘thank you’ to Liz who once again took on the job of managing the team whilst I was away, and thanks also to the players from our Division 1 team who filled in for us when we were short. Once we had negotiated all the off-field obstacles, we settled down to a steady run of losses, but rather to our amazement we still enjoyed our hockey. Playing a higher standard was harder, yes, but our game lifted and we actually won a couple of games. We had three bad losses, but for the most part we only lost by one goal. Having come last in Division 2 we can now look forward to returning to Division 3 in 2012 – taking care not to win again. In future, we will be content with runner-up I think. The Best & Fairest points awarded each week saw joint winners, Sue and Nicole, with Vicki, Helen and Chris not far behind, also on equal points. Just shows what great depth there is to the team, and how consistent our players are. Congratulations girls. I look forward to seeing you all back on the field again in 2012, for another enjoyable year of hockey. The team was: Anita Byers, Michelle Chidzey, Robin Darke, Liz Clarke, Vicki Earle, Chris Hagan, Carol Harriss, Nicole Hogan, Jenny MacGregor, Helen Rowley, Julie Singh, Lyn Smith, Sue Trent, Deb Vrachas

REPRESENTATIVE PROGRAM

Under 11 Girls The U/11 rep team had a very successful season, improving from their first games at Narellan to coming runners up at Campbelltown. This year they won the ACT Hockey regional carnival in Canberra. They also played in carnivals at Macarthur and Parramatta and did very well. The team as a whole improved together over the course of the season and should be very proud of their efforts in U/11 reps 2011. Team: Paris Barnard, Emma Blayney, Jessica Brogan, Clare Callinan, Naomi Duncan, Elise Frendo, Leah Fussell, Madison Marcinkewycz, Prue Middleton, Ellouise Paine, Madelaine Rust, Kaleah Salmon, Kiara Shaw and Elizabeth Tully.

Leah Cooke and Erinn Woan (Coaches)

Under 11 Boys This year we had a U11 boys team participate in the Macarthur carnival. The boys did brilliantly, considering they faced so many challenges. Only one of the team plays on full field on the weekend, most of the team still plays 7B's - so there was lots of updating them on the rules etc and what to expect. They did brilliantly - they didn't win a game, but they didn't get smashed - and most importantly - they still had big smiles on their faces at the end of their four games. !!!! Considering the size and age of some of our boys (Felix is only 7) they were champions. Thanks to Brad for coaching, the players all responded to his instructions very well.

Helen Rowley (Manager)

Under 13/1 2011 brought fourteen players together in the U13/1 team who jelled well, both on and off the field and with all but one player having previously played in the SSWHA Representative program. After a few training sessions together the season started with a hot Gala Day at Narellan against Macarthur before taking a break and the players returning to train with their own club teams, as the Central Coast Hockey Association Carnival was cancelled due to the rain. The U13/1’s played their first carnival together in May at the Campbelltown Carnival and had a good win, a draw and a very close loss and just missed out on the final. It was a successful day as we were able to see what we needed to work on for our game the following night at Homebush. The first game at Homebush in the SWHL was against Nepean and the team worked well together for an 8-0 win. The next SWHL game was against Campbelltown and was a hard- fought game, with the majority of the game in our favour, but in the end both teams were evenly matched for the second time this season – 2-2 draw. Unfortunately due to monsoonal rains the third SWHL game was cancelled. Sunday evening trainings became the norm as the team prepared for the Canberra Regional Carnival over the June long weekend. After a very defensive game with all players marking well, we lost 3 – 0 to a well positioned Lithgow team. This was the only game the U13/1’s lost and were scored against in, all weekend. The team was given a lesson in shoulder charging and aggression against Canberra and some players more than others, gave it back. By the end of the weekend, the team was passing well up and across the field and all players had learnt to be not so timid when tackling. However, players were still insisting on hitting the ball straight back into the pack in a panic when receiving it. The final placing for the Canberra Carnival this season was 3rd. As always, a great night was had at the U13 and U11 dinner. The State Championships in Taree were a new experience for many of the girls. The first two games we were caught off guard whilst attacking and our opponents made some well placed passes back down the field to score. The team was able to pull it together defensively and we had some good runs down the wings and up through the centre with great passing between players. Unfortunately we didn’t score any goals in our pool matches. Whilst the score line in the games against North Shore and New England did reflect how the team played, the 7-0 loss against Lithgow certainly did not reflect how well our girls played. The final pool game against Lithgow was a hard-fought game against a very experienced and well positioned team who were at home playing on a fast turf field. In the first half we conceded six expertly played goals. Our team played their hearts out and with every movement of an attacking player, our girls were their shadows, in a second half where Lithgow only scored once and where we almost scored twice. In the Pool cross-over matches, we again came up against Campbelltown and after a very exciting game we had, for the third time this year, a 2-2 draw. 2011 was a great season where all players learnt new skills and enjoyed new experiences. Thank you very much to Jasmine Davidson for managing the team and to each and every parent for bringing their daughters to our training sessions, carnivals and games. I wish you all the best of luck in the coming years, wherever you may be. Under 13/2 For the U13/2 Rep team 2011 brought a very successful hockey season. The team may not have won many games but all members of the team improved greatly and many new friendships were made. All members of the team at all carnivals showed great sportsmanship and showed a great passion and love for hockey. Despite losing a few players throughout the season all players displayed determination and passion by playing every minute of every game and never giving up despite a few unlucky goals and losses. All members of the U13/2 rep team displayed great improvements in all aspects of the game. The girls all discovered new talents and mastered new skills they never thought they could do. None of the girls’ successes as a team or as individuals would have been possible without the constant encouragement and support from parents and family members. It was wonderful to have so many parents present at carnivals to share in the fun and help out. Your help and encouragement was greatly appreciated. Also a huge thank you to Wayne Wilson who did a great job as manager for 2011. His constant efforts to make the season successful were greatly appreciated by all the girls, parents and myself. Also, a big thank you to Larissa Canturi and Stephanie Ancevski who captained the team. Both girls displayed great leadership skills which was very valuable at games and training sessions. In conclusion the 2011 Representative season was a very rewarding experience for all involved. It was great to see so many players improve, make new friends and most importantly have fun. Hope to see everyone back next year for another great season. Team: Stephanie Ancevski, Hannah Barnard, Larissa Canturi, Bianca Duncan, Alexandra Grant, Jessica Guilfoyle, Ciara McHardy, Annika Schweighoffer, Kiah Whiteside, Charlotte Wilson, Amy Witty, Denver Richards and Abbey-rose Lundksi.

Under 15 The Under 15 Sutherland Rep team competed in the State Championships which were held in Armidale from the 3rd -5th June. The team travelled together to Armidale by train – which was a great way for the girls to get to know each other. When we arrived in Armidale we were met by the coach and then proceeded to our motel to organise for the next day’s competition. The girls only had one game on the Friday and lost by only one goal after several unsuccessful short corners. We decided to take the team to the movies in the afternoon as there wasn’t a lot for them to do in Armidale. The choice of movie wasn’t popular with everyone but after the movie there weren’t too many complaints!! On Saturday the girls got off to a great start defeating Tamworth 6-0. It was a great team effort and goals were scored by Kate, Rachel, Michelle, Michaela and Phillipa. The next game was a few hours later and the girls were again successful defeating Wagga Wagga 4-0. All the girls played well and worked as a team with goals going to Liz, Shari and Cheyne-Lee. After finding out we finished second, the semi final was at 7.45pm against Manning Valley. It was another great team performance and the girls went down 2-1 after Manning Valley were awarded a penalty shot which they scored off. Manning Valley went on to win the Division 3 final. Congratulations to Michaela Gold who was selected in the NSW U15 Girls Squad. On behalf of the girls I would like to thank Brad Fussell for coaching the girls and travelling to Armidale for the State Championships – the girls really appreciate the time and effort you put in with them. Thanks also goes to Anne Camac who travelled with the team as Assistant Manager. The Under 15 Team would also like to thank ‘Groundtek Drilling’ for donating a set of Team Shirts for the girls to wear whilst in Armidale. Team: Michelle Arcidiacono, Elizabeth Astill, Sarah Barkman, Cheyne-Lee Bassingthwaighte, Rachel Challand, Rhiannan Earl, Michaela Golds, Samantha Knight, Erin Links, Kate McAughey, Phillipa Meikle, Shari Osgood, Jemma Sears, Courtney Smith, Tamara Wilkie and Chelsea Tautau.

Under 18 2011 saw the U18 Championships earlier than in previous years. We travelled to Newcastle for the weekend of 11-13 March. The girls started well in their first game against Parkes with solid defence and a high percentage of circle penetration, but just unlucky not to be able to put the ball away. The game against Sydney North was frustrating considering our girls had 90% of the attack. Sydney North managed to put away a soft goal leaving us with a very disappointing 1-0 loss. Sutherland hit their straps in the game against Crookwell. We maintained structure and discipline which resulted in success. The girls dominated the game against Coffs Coast, they finally had confidence with each other and themselves which led them to a 2-0 win. The semi-final against Goulburn was a balanced game with both teams showing solid defence and attack. Again the Sutherland curse was upon us and we just couldn’t put away our many chances hence a 2 goals to 1 loss. The team was once again a pleasure to coach and represented Sutherland with pride both on and off the field. A suggestion in respect to development of players is to recommend that clubs concentrate on the development of core basic skills. My involvement with the U/18’s and Metro players has identified this need with many players unable to trap, hit, push or even dribble the ball correctly. Finally I would like to thank my manager Sandy Parker and Rep Co-ordinator Julianne Clift for their tireless efforts in preparing the team for the championships and SSWHA for the opportunity to coach this team again.

Opens For the first time in 6 years, an opens team was entered into the Open Women’s State Championships held at South Coast. The team was a real mix of girls who were available, consisting of some girls who play in our 1st Metro team, as well as some girls who played in the 1st and 2nd grade local competition. Thrown together, we headed down to Albion Park on the Friday to play our first game against former State league champions Nepean, who were in our division due to their non participation in the Championships the year before, so they had to start in the bottom division. The Nepean team consisted of a number of players regularly representing NSW at junior and senior level. In a close fought contest, the result was a 2-1 loss, with the girls certainly not disgracing themselves. Our next match saw us take on Newcastle 2 on Saturday. In a tough match the girls won 1-0, which meant that if we won our final pool game and we have a superior goal difference, we would be in the semi finals. In the afternoon we took on Canterbury who had lost both their pool games thus far. The girls came out firing and recorded a 10-0 win, which put us up against the team ranked 1 in the other pool in the semis...Wagga Wagga. A very early start on Sunday morning at 8am was always a worry for the coach as there was a fear that the girls would not be switched on. It turned out that those fears were unfounded as the girls played an excellent team game to win 4 - 1. With Nepean easily winning their semi final, it was to be a rematch of Friday’s pool game, and we felt that we could give an excellent account of ourselves in the final, and anything could happen. The game started well, but we let in an early goal and that put us a little on the back foot. We went in at half time still well in the game and the players felt they could still get the result we wanted. The game was very physical with the Nepean team trying to intimidate our younger players. Our players demonstrated excellent discipline in the face of some very unsportsmanlike conduct from some of the opposition’s more senior players. An early penalty corner goal to Nepean in the 2nd half made life more difficult and the game could have been as good as over, but to the girls’ credit, they kept fighting and scored a goal with about four minutes left, which left a very tense couple of minutes for all at the ground. Nepean held out and took the title by the same result as our pool game....2-1. Thanks to Julianne Clift for managing the team, and to Lynne Cox and Mick Clift for their assistance on the weekend also. The girls were excellent on and off the field throughout and it was a pleasure to have been involved with the group. Although the title holder gets promoted into Division 2 next year, we will be the next in line should there be a withdrawal and the girls certainly deserve to be at that level in 2012. Thank you to our players who continue to represent the Sutherland Shire Women’s Hockey Association, the sportsmanship you display is appreciated. Each year you further develop your hockey skills and have fun along the way. We are very proud to have you represent our association and look forward to seeing you all again in 2012. Thank you to all the parents for your support at training, carnivals and championships and for your support of the 2011 rep program. I also sincerely thank our selectors, coaches and managers for their efforts at trials, training and games, and for the amount of time they (and their families) give to support hockey in Sutherland Shire. A big thank you to our umpires for committing to the rep teams, especially Cheyne-Lee Bassingthwaite who travelled to Taree with the U13’s and Nicole Kavanagh who officiated at the U18’s. Also to our Metro umpires – Alison Banks, Courtney Riordan and Monique Clift. Without umpires, we don’t have a game.

Over 35’s – Division One (Pool B) Held 28th – 31st July 2011 at Bathurst Match Results: Vs Parramatta Win 3 – 0 Vs Far North Coast Draw 0 – 0 Vs North Shore Win 1 – 0 Vs Orange Loss 1 – 0 Vs Dubbo Win 6 – 0 Semi Final: Vs Newcastle Draw 2 - 2 (Newcastle proceeded to the final due to being No.1 in Pool A) As you can see from the above results our team performed exceptionally well at this year’s State Championships. It was great to have defeated local nemeses’ Parramatta and North Shore who were more surprised than we were at their defeats by the Shire girls. The team functioned well together and maintained structure during all of our games which was the main ingredient for our success. Injuries and most likely a lack of fitness were our enemies especially in the Semi Final against Newcastle. Big hearts from all the ladies took us from being 2 nil down at half time to a draw. A few extra minutes and I’m sure we would have been victorious as we were applying the pressure and had all the attack in the dying minutes of the game. Orange were the eventual winners of Division 1 and given that we only lost to them 1 nil in the round games we would have had a great chance of beating them had we made the final...... maybe next year! Paula Chalmers was voted MVP. Over 40’s Division 2 Well what a great group of girls! After our short disappointment of not being put into Division 1, we well and truly got over it because we won Division 2!! We ended up finishing first in our pool, played Newcastle in the Semi Final and then had a convincing 3 nil win against New England in the Final. From our -5 degree starts of a morning to a few chinking glasses at night, we still managed to play some great hockey! A big thank you to Paula Chalmers for her great coaching skills and to Di Watkins and all the committee for all their efforts in getting us there. Congratulations to Sue Trent nominated as MVP for the weekend. Sue worked extremely hard and assisted in many goal opportunities. MVP was so close this year as everybody played really well and we all worked so well as a team. Congratulations to our team; Jenny Palmer, Lisa Cummins, Fiona Edgar, Julie Singh, Kathy Hails, Bev Williams, Sharon Cooper, Sue Trent, Lois Scott, Megan Squires, Vikki Palmer & Vicki Earle. Also a special thanks to Karen Hodgson as our beautiful water/drinks/band-aid queen!! I guess we should make it back to Div 1 next year so we may need a few pre-game meetings at the local for some strategic planning to retain our crown. Thanks again for a great weekend. Lisa Cummins, Manager.

Over 35’s Division 5 Don’t be fooled by these smiling faces and apparent sunshine – Bathurst was cold!! However, with only 11 players for our first match on Friday afternoon, everyone soon warmed up, and even with reinforcements on Saturday and Sunday, there was no time to stand around and shiver. We were missing several of our Homebush players, and Teresa was still out injured, so we welcomed EJ, Jaz, Sally B and Wendy to the team, with a return visit from Brookie and Carmen, and it didn’t take too long for everyone to settle down and play some good hockey. Good enough to take us to the finals against Far North Coast, but unfortunately not quite good enough to win – but the white hand towels are nicer than the light blue ones, so we were happy with that. If we had won we might have been put into Division 4 next year, so runners-up was a good place to be. Over the three days of play, every player had a ‘star’ moment or two, but from the very first minute of the first game the stand-out player was Anita, who played out of her skin to score some great goals, and was declared MVP at the end of the Championships. Well done Anita. Although injured and unable to play, Teresa came away to help with managing the team, and Sally P came back for a finale, as this was the 25th year that Teresa, Sally and Carol have been playing together in the Sutherland Vets team – that’s got to be some kind of record I think. Teresa was stoic as always, but Sally and Carol had a little emotional moment, helped along by a celebration glass (or two). Thanks must go to Heather for running the team yet again, Teresa for organising the subs and sideline support, and to Woody for being our umpire – we love having you with us Woody, so don’t retire for a while yet. Looking forward to doing it all again next year in Wagga.

CONSTITUTION REPORT

Over the years our Constitution has been updated on a somewhat piecemeal basis, which has lead to it becoming an awkward and hard to read document, not entirely in tune with the 21st century. The catalyst for a total overhaul this year was two-fold – to meet Hockey NSW requirements for Association Constitutions, and to meet Government funding requirements through changing the name of the Association. The Constitution Committee is comprised of Carol Harriss, Teresa Clews, Heather Sutherland and Janice Tully. Throughout the year the committee spent long hours drafting and re-drafting the many changes it considered necessary, before submitting these changes to the Board for their approval. These proposed changes to the Constitution will be presented at the Association AGM, where it is hoped the Association members will vote for the adoption of the new-look Constitution. Thanks must go to Teresa and Heather for their input regarding the historic background, and to Janice for her legal insights and awesome computer skills.

FIXTURES REPORT

My first season as fixtures convenor was hopefully our last full season on grass. Overall the fixtures ran reasonably smoothly, although as usual there were some hiccups with the turf. Games were played at Jenola, Sylvania Hockey Park turf, Sylvania Hockey Park grass, Moorebank sand and water turf and Kyeemagh turf. The first grade junior competition was played on Friday nights, primarily at Sylvania, although the last couple of rounds had to be moved to the Moorebank sand field. With many scraped knees and knuckles, the girls were grateful that the finals series was able to be played at Kyeemagh. The other junior competitions were played on the grass at Jenola, with the second grade girls getting to play on the turf one Saturday per month. Unfortunately, the lower grade girls were unable to get any time on the turf, as there was none available. The weather gods must have been smiling on the junior competition as we only lost 2 rounds to wet weather. A big improvement on last year! The senior first grade competition is a combined competition with the Eastern Districts Women’s Hockey Association and is known as SEPL. The SEPL competition is administered by a SEPL committee and they do their own fixtures. Their games were played at Sylvania, Kyeemagh and Bankstown. The senior second grade competition was also primarily played on the turf at Sylvania, although at often unpopular times. It seems there were less time slots available to us for our senior competition this year, so something must be going right for hockey. Moorebank was used a couple of times during the year when Sylvania was unavailable and a couple of games had to be moved to Moorebank in the last few rounds due to the lighting issue at Sylvania. Unfortunately the senior third grade competition was only able to play one round on turf prior to the finals due to the limited field availability. With late changes being required to the draw at times this season to accommodate other competitions and changes to field conditions I would like to thank all clubs for their patience with the fixtures this year. I look forward to our own turf coming on line some time next year giving me less difficulty scheduling games and all players no worries about wash outs.

GROUND OFFICER’S REPORT

Jenola, the home address for SSWHA for the last 70 years is coming under increased usage from other casual sporting bodies. As a consequence the fixed goals at Jenola are usually bare of grass from early in the hockey season. During the 2011 season, the Sutherland Shire Council erected four signs around Jenola prohibiting any form of football on the grounds. The exception was on such games where the authority of the SSC had been sought and obtained. Such signage appears to have only marginally reduced unauthorized usage. However there is yet to be a prosecution by the SSC for violation of the usage code. The 2011 season saw the railway chain wire fence removed along its entire length and replaced with two metre high steel picket style fencing. The downside of the new fence was that it successfully stopped all footballs penetrating the fence, but the spacing between the pickets was very amenable to permitting hockey balls through, and onto railway land. The SSC has been very accommodating, and assisted with a chain wire barrier behind all of the railway goals. That has been of assistance in stopping some of the hockey balls travelling through onto railway land. By the end of the hockey season at Jenola, the length of the grass and the unevenness of the cut, saw the SSWHA having to abandon Jenola for some of the finals. Except that 2011 may be our final season at Jenola, there is an argument for the purchase of a ride on mower so that the length of the grass and the cut and the attention to detail, can be controlled by the SSWHA itself. (Ride on mowers have a ready re-sale value).

JUDICIARY REPORT

In a clean season, the SSWHA Judiciary did not have to meet at all for player infringements. One decision was required to be made by email circular relating to the rules of the competition. The points for cards system continues to work well. Only 4 players received two cards this season and no player accumulated more than seven points. My thanks to the committee of Jenny Macgregor (Bosco), Brooke Cranney (RSL), Freya Annetts (Sharks), Lyn Smith (Sutho Blues), Karl Foster (Seacliff) and Allen Kavanagh (Tartans).

Janice Tully Judiciary Convenor PUBLICITY OFFICER’S REPORT

The year 2011 saw the SSWHA, with the assistance of the clubs, taking block advertisements in the local paper in the pre season, alongside the ARL, Soccer and Netball etc. The advertisements appeared on consecutive weeks in the sporting pages and was an attempt to lift the profile of hockey in the Sutherland/St George area. All clubs in the Association contributed, and their logos and details were in the advertisements. During the year, the accent was on having the SSWHA web site up to date. If the web site is up to date, all players within the SSWHA can rely on the material published on the web site for the draw, any changes to the play, and the points table. While the secretaries of the various clubs have the day-to-day running of their clubs, the onus should be on the individual player to ascertain where she/he is playing, the day and the time. Secretaries of the clubs, giving verbal updates on such matters as times and dates, can find themselves open to mistakes and of course, the approbrium that can follow. A well conducted web site will have a wealth of information on the entity. It can tell you about rule changes, umpire availability, historical information, players in the news, clubs in the news. It contains the constitution, by laws, details on local rules of play and this year, the web site was used to provide minute by minute information on the state of Jenola where there had been intense rain overnight, and there was uncertainty about play for the following day. The SSWHA aim is to have every player in the Association checking the SSWHA web site at least once a week.

UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT REPORT

The introduction of new style hoodies, skorts and wet weather jackets was very successful. We received positive feedback saying how great all the teams looked in the new uniform. The system of players trying the uniform and then placing an order has reduced the cost and amount of stock held. The old style shirts have been given to a charity in Samoa.

“A BIT OF HISTORY” Jenola Opens for Business

The Jenola Gala Day 11 April 1942

With the Association shortly to leave Jenola after 70 years what was it really like on the first day of ‘official’ hockey way back in 1942? In 1942 Australia was facing its greatest crisis. In New Guinea Australian servicemen were fighting a campaign more important than Gallipoli….a desperate struggle to save the homeland from the might of Imperial Japan. Seaside suburbs like Cronulla anticipated attack and possible invasion. Barbed wire and huge concrete blocks covered the beaches and some local areas were “Off limits” to civilians. In these grim times the Cronulla Section of the NSW Women’s Hockey Association commenced its inaugural season at Jenola. In1942 the Gannons Road ground consisted of one mown field running east west across what are now the No 2 and No 3 fields. It was not the lawn we now enjoy. Doug Burrell’s Laundry business in Denman Avenue behind the railway line served as the dressing sheds. A Gala Day opening was held on Saturday 11th April . This featured a spectacle of women’s sports, good weather and a large crowd including six of the nine Shire councillors. The ‘Cronulla Observer’ reported the event as follows: “With the variegated colours of the tunics of the various teams we saw a pageant of skill and beauty that was so colourful that it was truly a wonderful spectacle”. The same reporter saw the day as a triumph for women’s sport: “…our girls were at last taking a place in sport in this district where masculine sport has so largely dominated”. Celebrities who performed on the day included Miss E. Soult NSW High Jump Champion (who jumped to a height of 5 feet (1.5 m) and women’s state discus and sprint champions. In the feature hockey match a combined Graduates Club/Sydney University defeated a Sutherland Selection 5 goals to nil. Thus Jenola had begun its first official season of women’s hockey and for some the whole event was uplifting as the ‘Observer’ reporter extolled: “One visitor was heard to remark that at a time when the Government was closing and controlling drink and dance halls in the closer suburbs it was stimulating to one’s morals to witness such a collection of girls participating in clean, open sport where their parents could witness and enjoy their pleasure.” The inaugural competition began on 23rd May with five teams, all bearing aboriginal names; Koonwarra, Mirrabooka, Nargoon, Larool and Yarrenbool Many of the players were schoolgirls and a number had been recruited from the staff at Doug Burrell’s laundry. Each week the team with the bye travelled by train and tram to the Eastern Suburbs to play a team in the Woollahra section. Regular hockey had a home in the Shire.
