Electoral Rolls for the Shire LIBRARY SERVICES - ELECTORAL ROLLS FOR THE SHIRE WHAT ARE ELECTORAL ROLLS? Electoral rolls are an alphabetically arranged listing of people eligible to vote at Commonwealth, state/territory and local government elections and referenda. They are grouped under electoral divisions. At times divisions are further broken down into subdivisions. As electoral rolls exist for each tier of government, this allows three separate sources of information to be searched. When checking electoral rolls, the following key dates may be relevant to your search: 1902 The Commonwealth Franchise Act granted men and women who were British subjects 21 years and over the right to vote. Non-British subjects were not permitted to vote until the 1940s 1906 Sutherland Shire was formed 1967 Indigenous Australians eligible to vote 1973 The voting age was changed from 21 to 18 years HOW CAN ELECTORAL ROLLS ASSIST ME IN FINDING INFORMATION ABOUT SOMEONE IN THE SUTHERLAND SHIRE? Electoral rolls may assist with family/local history research as they can include an individual’s name, address and occupation for a specific year. Please be aware that house numbers or street names may not always be supplied for early electoral rolls eg. Surname Christian name Residence Occupation Miller James Miranda Butcher WHAT ELECTORAL ROLLS DOES SUTHERLAND LIBRARY HOLD? Sutherland Library keeps an extensive range of electoral rolls covering the Federal, State and Local levels for the following periods: State 1869-1929; 1991; 2003-2006 Commonwealth (NSW only) 1903-1929; 1989-1996 Joint Commonwealth & State 1930-1984 Local government 1968-2003 A complete list of holdings is located in the following pages although gaps for specific years may exist in the collection. WHERE ARE THE ELECTORAL ROLLS LOCATED? All material is located in the Reference Room (including Local Studies) on the 1st floor at Sutherland Library along with a broad range of genealogical material which may be of use to those researching family history. Please refer to the attached list of all electoral rolls in various formats held at Sutherland Library relating to Shire residents. Other resources located in Reference which may be of use to genealogists are: Archives Authority of NSW genealogical research kit List of streets, roads and localities in New South Wales RQ 324.64 NEW Commonwealth boundary redistribution maps in fiche format 1900-1984 (see attached list for holdings) and book form RF 328.3345 NEW Local Studies Room Histories written on the various towns/suburbs of N.S.W. WHY DOESN’T SUTHERLAND LIBRARY CARRY RECENT COMMONWEALTH ELECTORAL ROLLS? Changes to privacy laws on both federal and state levels have resulted in electoral rolls no longer being available for purchase by Sutherland Library (Commonwealth rolls ceased being sold in 2004, NSW rolls ceased in 2006).
