    A woman of values “They say” that former first lady Barbara Pierce Bush, who died in mid-April, smoked cigarettes. Well, she reached adulthood when smoking was common, indeed expected. She also represented many values that universally were revered in this country once upon a time, but not so much today, sadly. Before proceeding too far, it must be noted that her opinions about abortion troubled many Americans. She supported “a woman’s right to choose” to have an abortion, and she frankly and openly always said so. Her husband, former President George Herbert Walker Bush himself at one time thought as she thought regarding abortion, but he changed, totally. He is recalled as a champion of unborn life. And according to the record, almost every first lady, Republican or Democrat, since the U.S. Supreme Court declared access to abortion to be a constitutional right 45 years ago, has been in favor of legalized abortion. Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama all advocated legal abortion. Patricia Nixon was quiet on the subject. Rosalynn Carter always has condemned abortion, but she is against legally forbidding it. Melania Trump has never publicly spoken of abortion, one way or the other. Still, Barbara Bush’s abortion views aside, and they were disappointing, she displayed many qualities to be admired. When so many marriages are falling apart, and when so many live together without being married, she and the former president were wed for more than 70 years. From every indication, the bond of marriage between them always was strong.

Bush and the multitude of obituaries coming out of major American news media, the answer becomes remarkably clear. We remember them through rose-tinted glasses. Virtually all retrospectives on George H. W. Bush, no matter their author’s political predilection, sanctify him. This is certainly nothing new: the American media tends to concentrate on the positive aspects of recently deceased politicians rather than on their negative ones. However, this should not be the norm, especially in the case of a man who held many high-ranking government positions like George H. W. Bush. Obituaries are particularly powerful last comments on a person’s life. Sean Sweitzer, in his retrospective analysis on the life of former Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, argues that an obituary, unlike a biography or memoir, is directly accessible to a broad audience.

Residents of Blooming Grove organized a subscription school (the tuition was $2.50 for the four-month school term), and Delilah Mullin held classes at the Dawson cabin. Area residents erected the first log schoolhouse in 1827, and formally organized a school district in 1834. William Walker donated a half-acre lot (hence the school name) and the district erected a small frame schoolhouse. In 1848, the school moved to a lot at Thomas Orendorff’s sugar camp, and there the district built the county’s first brick schoolhouse (see Folder 1 for transcription of Walker School building fund subscription roll). In 1903, a new brick structure replaced the fifty-year-old school. Today, the 1903 schoolhouse survives as a single-family residence. The most important primary source documents in this collection are the attendance rolls for 1847 (Folder 2), 1848 (Folder 3), and 1853 (Folder 4). Each folder contains the original manuscript together with a photocopy of the original and Milo Custer’s 1919 transcription. These three originals are in extremely fragile condition and patrons should consult the photocopies and transcriptions.
