Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL- SRSAM) February 23, 2021 In News: Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted two successful launches of Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) . About VL-SRSAM VL-SRSAM is meant for neutralizing various aerial threats at close ranges including sea-skimming targets. The current launches were carried out for demonstration of vertical launch capability as part of its maiden launch campaign. On both occasions, the missiles intercepted the simulated targets with pinpoint accuracy. The missiles were tested for minimum and maximum range. VL-SRSAM with Weapon Control System (WCS) were deployed during the trials. The launches were monitored by senior scientists from various DRDO labs involved in the design and development of the system such as DRDL, RCI, Hyderabad and R&D Engineers, Pune. During the test launches, flight path and vehicle performance parameters were monitored using flight data, captured by various Range instruments such as Radar, EOTS and Telemetry systems deployed by ITR, Chandipur. The present trials have proved the effectiveness of the weapon system and few more trials will be conducted shortly before deployment on Indian Naval ships. Once deployed, the VL-SRSAM system will prove to be a force multiplier for the Indian Navy. Short Range Surface to Air Missile system (SRSAM) Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile System (QRSAM) is a Short Range Surface to Air Missile system. QRSAM is designed to protect moving armoured columns from aerial attacks. The entire weapon system is configured on highly mobile platforms and is capable of providing air defence on the move. QRSAM Weapon Systems is being inducted into the Indian Army (IA). The Missile is canisterised for transportation and launch using a mobile launcher capable of carrying 6 canisterised missiles. The missile is propelled by a single stage solid propellant rocket motor and uses all indigenous subsystems. 1.World Trade Report of WTO: Key Highlights The World Trade Organisation recently released the World Trade Report, 2020. The report analyses the adoption of government policies to foster technological progress and digital innovation. The report says that due to covid-19 crisis, around 115 countries have adopted new digital and industrial strategies to fasten the transition towards digital economy. This mainly includes tax breaks to facilitate digital innovation, policies to address access to data, technological hub to maximise knowledge diffusion and research and development report. The increasing importance of data in the digital world is creating higher demand for new international rules on data localisation, privacy protection and data transfer. Key findings of the report ● The report highlighted that the World Trade Organisation has supported innovation by eliminating tariffs through the Information Technology Agreement. ● The report says that Asian power houses which has India China and Japan have contributed to 40% of world research and development in 2017. The contribution was 8.2 % in 1996. ● According to the report, Brain gain effects exist in Russia and China but not in India. Brain gain is the increase in number of intelligent and trained professionals entering a country to live and work as the country provides greater opportunities. ● According to the report, the online platforms have gained significant growth since the start of the pandemic. For instance, the MercadoLibre reported 70.5% increase in revenue in the first quarter of 2020. Similarly, Alibaba reported 22% increase in sales in the first quarter. ● The main challenge that lies in the changing digital world is to build up necessary infrastructure that facilitates the transition.

Fifth most powerful to be precise. The armed forces include three professional services-Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. The Indian Armed forces are supported by Indian Coast Guard, paramilitary organisations and other allied forces. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the forces. Coming under the Ministry of Defence, the Indian military forces have active 1.4 million personnel serving. Additionally, it is the world's largest volunteer army 1947 was the year India got independence. It was also the year when the subcontinent was bifurcated into two independent nations-India and Pakistan. Bifurcation was not only made on the territorial lines but also in terms of resources. Accordingly, the forces were divided too, in terms of personnel, ships, divisions and aircrafts. In January 1949, KM Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief. In 1954, Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force. And in the same year, Vice Admiral Ram Dass Katari became the first Chief of Naval Staff. Indo-Pakistan war of 1947-48 One of the first conflicts Indian Armed forces had to face was just after independence, the Indo-Pakistan war of 1947-48. This war was fought over the then princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The war ended with a ceasefire being declared on December 31, 1948.
