The dinner table lacked food. I sat at my place crying, showing people my reading skills. Each day I learned next to my teary eyed mom. I was stupid, and we both something new, whether I learned Latin prefixes or knew it. The college application essay written by our alumna Allison Arne reprinted in this Annual Report inspired me. As the parent of four children with dyslexia – all who attended The Schenck School – I recognize clearly her sentiments on being dyslexic. The following paragraph is a testament to both her hard work and the hearts of all at the School who help to remediate people with dyslexia.

"I was no longer the tiny sixth grader whose mom had to tell my school about me. I was me: a strong, independent dyslexic who loves to learn and be the best I can be. My attitude towards learning didn't change, and I became proud of the fact that I was dyslexic. For me, dyslexia is a strength."

What Does It Take?

Yes, the fundraising component of the Auction & Gala is very important to the School, but even more valuable is the opportunity for our community to gather and have fun!

What does it take to put on an event like this? Volunteers! Nine committees chaired by Schenck School volunteers donate their time and talents to ensure the success of the event. Committee volunteers solicit donations and sponsorships, organize the “Instant Wine Cellar,” create wonderfully creative grade level baskets, capture every student in a photo, make beautiful displays, and more!

It takes the generosity of parents, faculty, staff, trustee, and friends of the School. The success of the Auction & Gala depends on donations and sponsorships. Every gift to the Auction & Gala helps us achieve our goal of raising funds to support the School.

Why I Give to The Schenck School Britton Burdette ‘88

The greatest lesson I learned as a student at The Schenck School is that my dyslexia is not a disability, but a gift. Quite simply, The Schenck School freed me from the things that could have held me Young Alum Gives Back to the School back. Now all of you have just heard what my Eagle project was, but I would like to explain why I chose to do my project for The Schenck Britton and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Atlanta. He is a Director at the School. It was because they are the ones, after my family of Stan Johnson Company. course, who gave me the tools to succeed and be confident in life. Before going to The Schenck School, I was doing poorly in school and miserable with myself. Once I arrived there, I understood that my dyslexia was something that I could work with and even use to my advantage. It would not be an exaggeration to say that if it was not for them, I quite possibly would not have been able to be motivated enough to get my Eagle Scout rank or any other award that I have received in recent years. It is not possible for me to describe the great miracles that the school performs for its students. I remember the day I was accepted. We were waiting for one more spot to open up, but it wasn’t looking good. In fact, we were actually on our way to pay the deposit check at another school when my mom got a call with the good news. She was so happy for me that she began to cry tears of joy. So naturally, when it came time to do a service project, it would have been right to do it for The Schenck School
