Perhaps you’ve seen the word while browsing our website, or heard it from Library staff during a visit to your local branch. The term defines a place where people CONTRIBUTORS: of all ages can gather and partake in different types of DIY experiences. Makerspaces provide hands-on learning, while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and confidence. Alison Rowley
Ceilie Servais In District 1, we are embracing the idea of the Library as a MakerSpace! We’ve Christine Savage implemented a variety of maker activities in our programming and continue to seek new Donna McMillan ways of introducing our maker culture to patrons of all ages. We work hard to provide Jenna Lamarche meaningful maker experiences for everyone, from preschoolers to grandparents! Kelly DeJong Madame Larocque Our South Mountain, Chesterville, and Finch branches offer weekly knitting clubs for Susan Wallwork adults looking to get crafty in a traditional way. With the help of our Friends, the Crysler Sylvie Juteau Branch has started offering ‘Paint Dates’ for teens hoping to discover their inner Sylvie Legault Picasso. At the Winchester Branch, we offer weekly opportunities for children to gather and get creative. Winchester’s ‘Monday Morning Storytimes’ introduce preschoolers to & all the staff at the arts and crafts, while our popular ‘MiniMakers’ program entertains school-aged children SD&G County Library with an amazing variety of maker projects including robotics, cardboard castles, and paper volcanoes!

Canadian Public Library Month - Celebrating Libraries!

October is always an exciting month for libraries - it’s a full month dedicated to celebrating everything that public libraries bring to their communities.
From traditional services such as readers’ advisory and borrowing print materials, to newer informational resources such as gaming and 3D printers, the SD&G County Library is excited to showcase all we have going on.
And we certainly have a lot to celebrate! We continue to develop our collections, including new resources like our Mobile Internet Hotspots, and participation in programs like our SDG Reads is growing. As well, we’re always looking for ways to connect to our communities - whether it’s new initiatives such as paint nights and outreach to community groups, to those tried and true practices such as storytimes and book clubs. Our connections to the community make the Library a truly wonderful place to be!
Canadian Public Library Month isn’t just about the resources we offer though. It’s also about celebrating those visitors that value and use our services. It’s an opportunity for Library staff to say “thank you” to those individuals that come in to see us; whether to borrow materials, attend a program, or use informational resources in branch. All our patrons help to make the Library an important part of our communities.
This October, all our branches are offering a range of celebratory activities to welcome new and old patrons into the Library. We’ve got Open Houses scheduled to showcase all of our resources, as well as special programs such as our author visits and contests. Join us at any of our branches and help share in the celebrations!

I have been working at the Crysler Branch for seven years. I started in August 2010. Vous travaillez avec la bibliothèque des comtés unis de SD&G depuis combien de temps? What do you love the most about working at the Library? I have worked close to people most of my life and I love having regular contact with patrons. I enjoy the fact that a library is a positive place and patrons are usually happy to be here, especially if they have ordered a book they are particularly thrilled to receive, their museum pass arrived at just the right moment, or they have attended a program we offered that they really enjoyed! Qu’aimez-vous le plus de votre travail à la bibliothèque? J’ai travaillé auprès des gens presque toute ma vie, j’aime avoir des contacts régulier avec les clients. J’apprécie le fait que la bibliothèque soit un endroit positif. Les clients sont habituellement heureux d’y être, spécialement s’ils ont reçu un livre qu’ils attendaient depuis quelque temps, ou que le laissez-passer pour un musée arrive juste au bon moment, ou lorsqu’ils ont profité pleinement d’une activité que nous avons organisée!
If you could tell people one thing about the SD&G County Library, what would it be? I would tell them that even if our branch here in Crysler is on the small side, our services are monumental because we can request items from our fifteen facilities. We offer the latest in technology, we offer numerous programs and our online services are growing continuously! What are you reading right now? I am reading Trois jours et une vie by Pierre Lemaître, a story about a whole town mourning for a child who has disappeared and the distress of the boy who is responsible for the disappearance. Que lisez-vous en ce moment? Je suis en train de lire Trois jours et une vie de Pierre Lemaître. Ce roman raconte l’histoire de la population entière d’un village qui pleure la disparition d’un enfant. On est également témoin de la grande détresse du garçon qui est responsable de cette disparition.

My Library Story: Connections to the SD&G County Library
“I have held a library card to many different libraries through my life, Cornwall, Ottawa and Winnipeg to name a few, and I have never received the kind of service I receive from the Long Sault Branch. I have always lived in a rural area but thought that I would read all the books in a year at a small rural library so I would buy a membership to a big city library. Now for free membership, Long Sault has proved me wrong by finding any book I want to read and ordering it for me.”

Programs presented by the SD&G County Library encourage children, teens, and adults to discover the magic of reading in their lives. Programs also offer a great way to meet people! Children aged five and under attending a program must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver; brothers and sisters of those who attend Library programs may also attend, with the same stipulation.

Patron Tales — Swedish Weaving Group (Ingleside)

Swedish weaving was almost a lost art! This type of embroidery is also known as “Huck Embroidery”, named for the fabric it was stitched on. It is a process of working a pattern on top of the fabric - the thread never appears at the back. It can be worked on a variety of materials such as huck toweling, monk’s cloth, waffle, and/or aida cloth with wool or pearl cotton thread. You start in the centre of the material and work to the side in abstract geometrical patterns under and over the weave in the material.
Three years ago at the Ingleside Branch of the SD&G County Library, we had a woman come to teach a group of five ladies this wonderful hobby. Now there are between 12-18 ladies that meet at the branch on Tuesday afternoons to share ideas, weave, and enjoy a lot of laughs. There is always someone there to help beginners and answer any questions that people may have. We also have starter kits for those looking for where to begin.
We hope, if you are interested in this hobby, you will come and see what we do on any Tuesday afternoon at the Ingleside Branch - we’d love to show you what we’re working on! SDG READS AUTHOR VISIT - LAWRENCE HILL - OCTOBER 12, 2017 2017

SDG Reads has been a very successful initiative by Library staff, beginning in October 2015 with a visit from author Elizabeth Hay, followed by Frances Itani in October 2016. This year’s visit by the author of The Illegal, Lawrence Hill, is revving up to be another successful event!
So, what has fostered the success of the SDG Reads program?
I think the success begins with the audiences’ joy of reading and realizing the value of imagination. Libraries encourage the love of reading and allow a safe space in which reading can occur. Reading forces you to learn new words and open your mind to new thoughts and ideas. In my few years working at the Library, I have witnessed children and adults who have discovered reading to be an absolute pleasure. They have developed that drive to want to turn the page, to know what happens next, and to keep going to see how it all turns out. Through reading, you also learn that your world does not have to be like it is. Reading encourages the development of empathy when the reader moves away from their own self-absorbed world and begins to feel the experiences and emotions of others, such as Dory getting safely home in Finding Dory, or the survival of the refugee Keita in The Illegal.
Through SDG Reads, we have come to value the non-virtual, powerful, ‘old-fashioned’, verbal interaction between the speaker/author and the audience/reader. As you have been reading the selected SDG Reads novels, have you ever wondered how the author’s life and experiences connect to their work? Author Frances Itani spoke last year about the “Home for the Deaf” she remembered from her past, learning sign language while writing her book to better understand how the deaf communicate, and how the characters from her first book would not rest in her imagination until she had completed their stories in Tell. What stories and experiences of life fueled Lawrence Hill’s creativity in The Illegal regarding the treatment of refugees or diagnosing diabetes? We can’t wait to find out.

SDG Reads - bringing our community together, one author at a time!
It’s that time of year again; time for our third annual SDG Reads event! Each year, the Library hosts an author and creates one massive book club. It is so exciting to see how the program unfolds - from the planning, unveiling, and lead up programs, to the final author visit. It really is a community effort to bring these authors to the Counties and create buzz around the book.
The Library continues to host award-winning authors who have been delighted by the reception they received and the engaged participants who have taken the time to read the book. People come from all over the Counties to meet the author, visit with their friends, and enjoy an evening of literary discussion.
Like the program in the past, this year will see many of the Library branches hosting activities that tie into the book. And ultimately, will lead participants to North Stormont Place in Avonmore for the final event, featuring author Lawrence Hill.
As with all great book clubs, this one will be filled with wonderful food and drinks, lively conversation and new friendships. SDG Reads is not only an amazing evening spent with an award-winning author, it is a way to connect our different communities and form bonds with people who, like you, have read the book and want to share it with their friends. It is a special event that brings our communities together to share in something that they are passionate about.

Great Reads! Young Adult Thrillers Have Much to Offer Older Readers By Alison Rowley
Many older readers will greet my title with skepticism. The kinds of young adult books that make a big splash with wider audiences tend to be works set in dystopian future or feature young magicians. Young adult thrillers have not tended to cross over in this way, despite the fact that some of them are frankly, very, very good!
To see what I mean, pick up Shelter by best-selling author Harlan Coben. Readers who have long delighted in Coben’s Myron Bolitar novels will find that Myron’s nephew Mickey is just as engaging a hero, and the surrounding cast - his friends Ema and Spoon - are as memorable as Win, Esmeralda and Big Cindy. Best of all, Shelter was followed by two more books: Seconds Away and Found. Mickey and company even found their way into Coben’s most recent title for adults, Home, and, given the twist at the end, it appears that we may see much more of Mickey in books to come.
A second gripping trilogy, is the Crusher series by Niall Leonard. I recognized his name from some of his screen-writing work. Leonard has written for some of the best British crime dramas, including Silent Witness and Wire in the Blood. Crusher chronicles 17 year old Finn Maguire’s search for his father’s killer, a search that is made much more difficult because our hero is dyslexic. Finn’s reluctant engagement with the London criminal underworld continues in the novels Incinerator and Shredder.
Finally, there is Barry Lyga’s simply outstanding trilogy, I Hunt Killers, Game, and Blood of my Blood. The premise of the story seems a bit of a stretch at first; Jasper Dent (Jazz) is the teenage son of one of the most successful serial killers (read more than 100 dead by his hand) in US history. When a dead body is discovered in his town, we see Jazz wanting to help the police, even if most of the local residents view him with fear and suspicion. It turns out Jazz has a special skill - he can see the world through the eyes of a serial killer, and thereby point out patterns and clues that others miss. But his childhood has also left Jazz with crippling fears that he is only one slip of the knife away from becoming the killer that this father wanted and trained him to be. Jazz’s struggles to come to terms with his family, and with himself, make these novels absorbing, rather than sensational. Readers who like tortured heroes, such Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole, will find that Jasper Dent also stays with them long after they turn the last page. And while sure, maybe it was cool when you were a kid and things like homework didn't exist, the idea of hanging around books all evening now seems like an afterschool nightmare.

Avez-vous déjà acheté des vêtements vert et blanc pour une journée en septembre? Pour les Franco-Ontariens?!
Et oui, le 25 septembre est la Journée des Franco-Ontariens et des Franco- Ontariennes. Cette date fut aussi appelée la Journée du drapeau mais le 30 avril 2010, par une initiative de l’Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario (AFO), le 25 septembre fut désignée comme la Journée des Franco-Ontariens officiellement par l’Assemblée législative de l’Ontario. Oui, c’est passé à l’unanimité au gouvernement ontarien!!!!!
Pourquoi cette date? Elle souligne la naissance du drapeau franco-ontarien qui eu lieu en 1975, à l’Université Laurentienne, à Sudbury. Monsieur Gaétan Gervais, professeur d'histoire à l'Université Laurentienne et Michel Dupuis, étudiant en sciences politiques de première année à la même université en sont les créateurs. Le vert représente l'été et le blanc, l'hiver de l'Ontario. La fleur du trille blanc à la droite est la fleur emblème officielle de la province de l'Ontario. La fleur de lys à la gauche est le rappel de l'appartenance au peuple Canadien français. Voilà pour l’histoire du drapeau!
Maintenant, que fait-on cette journée? Et bien, comme chaque communauté qui compose l’Ontario à sa couleur, c’est la même chose pour les festivités! Certains sont une levée du drapeau ; d’autres ont une cérémonie officielle ; d’autre encore une fête…. enfin, ici, dans la région de Glengarry Nord, l'École secondaire catholique Le Relais rassemble différents organismes dont le Centre culturel, la Caisse de la Vallée, la Fraternité et plusieurs bénévoles pour faire vibrer la culture franco-ontarienne pour tous les jeunes francophones de la région : un tintamarre dans les rues d’Alexandria, la levée du drapeau au parc et les chansons officielles (“Notre place” et “Mon beau drapeau”), des jeux ludiques et un dîner. Un avant- midi pour célébrer notre culture!

Le Sans-Papiers, par Lawrence Hill Critique de Livre par Sylvie Juteau, LSA, Succursale d’Alexandria
À la suite de l'immense succès d'Aminata (The Book of Negroes), Lawrence Hill nous émouvoit à nouveau avec Le Sans-Papiers. Il s'agit d'un récit poignant où il traite d'appartenance et d'exclusion ainsi qu'au sort des migrants démunis recherchant asile dans les pays choyés. Ce roman qui se déroule en 2018 dans deux pays fictifs: Libertude et le Zantoroland, raconte l'histoire de Keita Ali, un jeune marathonien clandestin qui lutte pour survivre dans un pays qui ne veut pas de lui. La mort subite de sa mère, et l'assassinat de son père l'entrainent dans une course pour la vie lorsque son nom s'ajoute à la longue liste d'exécutions du dictateur de Zantoroland. Keita se réfugie à Libertude, pays d'une richesse inouïe où des politiciens gardent le pouvoir en promettant l'exil forçé de tous les sans-papiers venus du Zantoroland. Reste sa soeur, tenue en otage, pour laquelle il tente à tout prix de gagner des courses pour payer la rençon... Keita cours et cours, pour elle et pour sa survie. Le Sans-Papiers nous plonge dans un marathon entrelacé d'amour, de destins et de courage se déroulant sur un circuit pavé de corruption et de division. Je ne suis pas habituellement avide de romans où la souffrance humaine domine, c'est donc avec un enthousiasme relatif que j'en ai entrepris la lecture. Ceci dit, je vous avoue avoir beaucoup aimé "Le sans-papiers". L'auteur a su tisser son récit d'un petit fil d'espoir faisant en sorte que mon expérience de lecture se soit couronnée d'un doux beaume au coeur.
