If you try to read Schreber’s dense, contradictory, and often disturbing writings on the nature of God, and one man’s relationship with him, you’ll misread it, too. Picking up this book in its most recent edition will cause us, if we follow the blurb on the back, to misread it as an account of the experiences of a man suffering from what we would now call schizophrenia.

Abstract I intend to locate Freud's contributions in relation to personal names and repression. His most spreaded idea of the unconscious is it is necessary to highlight the way in which the personal name is tied to a lack. Without lack the reality-test could not be installed a consequence of repression. Repression operates in three stages described in his metapsychology. In order to articulate his findings, and the separation between conscious and unconscious could not be established.     Journal of Literature and Art Studies, June 2020, Vol. 10, No. 6, 458-460 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2020.06.002 D DAVID PUBLISHING Daniel Paul Schreber’s Homosexuality and Schizophrenia Robert Dole Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, Québec, Canada Daniel Paul Schreber (1842-1911) was once the Presiding Judge in the Saxon Court of Appeal and a doctor of law in Germany, until he was afflicted with a severe mental illness in 1884. He was given the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. His delusional systems involved intimate contact with God and the overwhelming desire to become a woman and to be impregnated by God. He repressed his homosexuality throughout his life. He published an autobiographical account of his mental illness in 1903 in a book entitled Denkwürdigkeiten eines Nervenkranken (Memoirs of a Nervous Illness), which soon became a classic of psychiatric literature commented on by Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and other psychoanalysts. Scull, whose books constitute pillars of the anti-psychiatry movement, thus reveals that psychiatrists still know very little about the causes of horrendous mental illnesses like schizophrenia. In my various writings, I have striven to demonstrate that the repression of homosexuality can cause schizophrenia. I have already published articles in The Journal of Literature and Art Studies attempting to show that the repression of homosexuality provoked schizophrenia in the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, the Québec poet Émile Nelligan, and the American mathematician John Nash.

    Published in: The Psychoanalytic Review, 98(6):775-815, December 2011 The teachings of honorary professor of psychiatry Daniel Paul Schreber J.D. to psychiatrists and psychoanalysts, or dramatology’s challenge to psychiatry and psychoanalysis Zvi Lothane In 2011 we celebrate a milestone: Freud’s 1911 epochal essay on the historically ground- breaking Schreber’s (1842-1911) Denkwürdigkeiten eines Nervenkranken (Memoirs, 1955) and the 100th death anniversary of its author, unquestionably the most famous patient in the annals of psychiatry and psychoanalysis. If it were not for Freud, Schreber’s book, his father Moritz’s books, and the publications of his psychiatrists would have been consigned to the dustbin of history. In the spring of 1910, after Jung pressed a copy of the Memoirs into Freud’s hands, Freud raved in a letter to Jung about “the wonderful Schreber, who ought to have been made a professor of psychiatry and director of a mental hospital” (Freud/Jung Letters (FJL, p, 311) as he progressed with “the analysis of our dear and ingenious friend Schreber” (p. 369). Schreber’s book is indeed wonderful: not merely an account of his second illness but a literary work, a philosophical essay, an wellspring of seminal ideas for psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, philosophers, and writers ever since. Never was such an honorific professorship bestowed on a former asylum inmate for generations diagnosed as the paradigmatic paranoiac, let alone schizophrenic, which, as recent research indicates, he was not (Lipton, 1984, Lothane, 1989, 1992a, 2004, 2010a; Peters, 1990, 1995, 1998). Only a few psychiatrists cited the Memoirs (Jung, 1907; Bleuler, 1911, 1912b; Kraepelin, 1913; Jaspers, 1973), compared to legions of psychoanalysts and others, and the list is still growing.

In other words, the psychoanalytic method of interpretation is turned back on the theory itself. Considered are Freud's theories of sexuality, pleasure-unpleasure, masculinity-femininity and the metapsychology. The roots of these theories are located in Freud's intellectual "childhood" in a nineteenth"",century system of values and traced from that source through major portions of his later work. We imagine it as a place behind our eyes, hear it as an internal voice, talking silently to ourselves, picture it with the visual images of dreams and fantasies, and feel and sense it in other ways. We speak of psychological experience as occurring in "the mind" though "it" is certainly not a thing. Common usage employs all these metaphors of locating, picturing and hearing, derived from the various sense modalities. Psychologists and psychoanalysts rely on many of these same metaphors and use, in addition, symbols and analogies from other fields. The mind is described as a machine, a steam engine or telephone switchboard in the past or a computer, processing information, today. Biological analogies are employed: the mind as a "creature" that takes in nourishment in the form of stimuli and digests, assimilates or incorporates it.

Abstract We will discuss the masculinity considering what Daniel Paul Schreber has stated in his book “Memoirs of my nervous illness”. We will recourse to that book other than the discussion that Freud, Lacan and other authors produced on it. Next, we will extract the elements to our reflections about masculinity in psychoanalysis. In short, we will verify what the psychotic subject can teach us about becoming a man bearing in mind that in the psychosis, unlike what occurs in the neurosis, the castration complex is not the matrix of choice of the psychic sex. Public understanding of psychiatry and psychology has played an increasingly important role in mentally ill people’s prospects for recovery as inpatient care has given way to outpatient care supplemented by patients’ families and communities during the past half century. Many people with severe mental illnesses end up homeless or in prison not only because of cuts to services that help them work toward autonomy and social integration, but also because of how their communities treat them, from ignorance and misunderstanding of mental health issues to the stigma that often accompanies mental illness. Contemporary scholars and artists have much to learn about changing attitudes toward mental disorder through an examination of the schizophrenia concept’s migration from the mental health professions to fiction and cultural theory.

Fout has called 66 a ‘new,’ historically specific stage in the history of sexuality” (389). It is quite clear that our reading of what exactly happened around 1890 will be contingent in large measure on our assessment of Freud’s of the Oedipus complex and thus of psychoanalysis, just at this time. How to inter- pret this foundational event, however, is less clear. According to the “official” accounts endorsed by the psychoanalytic establishment, what hap- pened was simply that Freud’s attainment of psychological maturity- marked not least by the “over~oming~~of homoerotic desire-led to an advance in the theory of sexuality that made possible a great scientific dis- covery (Kris). According to critiques of Freud that currently enjoy hege- mony, on the other hand, the story is one of betrayal and abuse (Masson). According to this revisionist version, Freud originally asserted that abuse of girls by adult male relatives (usually fathers) is the cause of later hysteria in women, but he abandoned this correct understanding in favor of a theory of infantile sexual desire and fantasy because the “true” account was threaten- ing to patriarchal privilege. Neither of these extremes will do, neither Saint Sigmund nor Freud the fraud. There is something that hagiographers and demonologists of Freud alike have left out of accounts of this stage in the history of sexuality, the ways in which the foundations of psychoanalysis and the Oedipus complex are specifically embroiled in the homophobic-anti- Semitic movement of the fin de sihcle.’ GLQ, Vol.
