LISA MENNA a Superstition By Chloe Olewitz PHOTO BY JACQUE MENNA Lisa, age 17, performing for Muhammad Ali at the 1982 Desert Magic Seminar Lisa Menna was one of the last to compete at the Las Vegas Desert Magic Seminar’s open close- up session in 1982, when she was 17 years old. It was a long day, and she remembers how the checked-out audience had perked up at the sight of a young woman in a white, form-fitting, knit dress. Waiting in the wings before her set, Menna noticed a celebrity sitting in the front row that no one had called on yet. She decided to go for it, and walked straight toward him to ask, “Could you please come help me?” Whatever attention she had gotten for being a gender anomaly in the 20- person close-up competition was dwarfed by the fact that the girl had just picked Muhammad Ali. When he joined her on stage, Menna doubled down on her carefree clown character. “Hi! My name’s Lisa! What’s your name?” She had no idea that her feigned innocence would get such a big reaction. “My name’s Joe,” Ali responded. “Joe Frazier.” More laughter. “Gosh Joe, you sure have big hands,” Menna said. The room erupted. Menna was born in Connecticut in 1964. When she was four years old, her family relocated to St. Louis, where she encountered magical clown Steve “Ickle Pickle” Bender at her older brother’s birthday party. When she was seven, Menna received her first magic set as a gift from her mother, who during her own youth had mailed in 57 Popsicle wrappers collected over the course of a single summer in exchange for a set of multiplying billiard balls.

No part of this book may be reproduced in any form, without the prior written permission of the author. INTRODUCTION "It’s kind of fun to do the impossible." -- Walt Disney Just who and what is The Magic Lawyer®1? I’m asked that question quite a bit. It is a persona, a brand, and a real person, all in one. It is what happened when law mixed with magic. It is what a perfect stranger remembers when they see my card in their wallet months after we met. It is the hope that my clients have that, no matter how bad their situation is, they know that their lawyer is doing his best “magic” for them in court. It represents a refreshing way to practice law - - a way that reminds the client that life can be fun, no matter what happened to them, or why they are in their current situation. It is also a really cool way to market Robert Speer, Attorney at Law. When I was about ten years old, my dad let me travel with him when he made his sales calls around the southeast. On our travels, we would always look forward to stopping at one of the Stuckey’s gas stations along the road. Stuckey’s gas stations are long gone, but my memory of them, and my dad, are not. In Stuckey’s, you could always find a rack of tricks and pranks made by the S.S.

    With Jason Andrews

Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Jason Andrews Over the last months of 2009, Nick Lewin and I wrote several words praising the skill & performances of a young Magician in his early 20’s. That Magician’s name is Jason Andrews. Channing Pollock, Joanie Spina, Jeff McBride, Johnny Thompson and a whole Host of other top names in our business also rate Jason extremely highly. Ordinarily when reference is made to a “young” Magician it can sometimes be interpreted as a mite patronizing but I make the point in this instance to convey the exceptional and outstanding talent that Jason possesses ; he has the smoothness of performance and skill that usually only comes from decades of performing experience. His Stage presence is mesmerizing and without a doubt a gift from the Gods of Theater. Jason has taken that gift and honed it into outstanding skill. I lecture, consult & instruct on the Performance & Presentation of Magic. I have had the honor and privilege to be a judge at Magic contests alongside such names as Kendrick “Ice” McDonald, Rod Chow and Jon Racherbaumer. I therefore, do not lavish praise lightly. However, when it is earned and truly merited I do not hold back either; hence my praise of Jason Andrews. I have seen him perform over the last couple years and more recently at The Harmon Theatre in Vegas. Anyone who has been there will know that it is an “in“ place and not on the tourist maps. The audiences there are 98% made up of experienced Performers (mostly those working in Vegas).

This Article Originally Appeared in Genii Magazine in 2002 Review of Legends of Magic in October 2001 INTRODUCTION “I have waited over twenty years for a magic event like this… Now, I’m all about hope, but with all the commercialism in magic and then the Masked Magician, I stopped calling myself a magician. This conference restored my faith, and I am very proud to call myself a magician once again.” When Jim Snack, a professional speaker, shared those words with me, I knew Legends of Magic had been an extremely important and - dare I say - a life-changing event. “Legends” was a magicians’ retreat into the Nevada Mountains, away from the hustle and bustle of the Las Vegas strip, so that those who love our art might spend quality time with one another and with some of the great legends of magic history. It was a Mystery School production created by the insightful team of Jeff McBride, Eugene Burger, manager/director Tobias Beckwith and company. So many conventions are filled to the brim with lectures, shows and product pitches, that there is hardly time to connect with one another. This conference was designed to foster dialogue – real communication and as we each develop our own legends. It was definitely not Mystery School – that ended two years ago. Legends of Magic was fresh, creative, meaningful and truly legendary, truly a retreat. THE FACILITY The Mount Charleston Hotel, a few thousand feet above and forty-five minutes beyond The Strip, was an ideal location. Out most every window I could see pristine desert mountain vistas.
