Considered a living legend and sleight of hand expert, he was a columnist, author, lecturer and magic dealer. Howie was born in New York November 21, 1927 and first became interested in magic when only five. A family friend, Solo Goldsmith, taught him some simple magic including the Chinese Laundry Ticket and Howie discovered more in his local library. At age twelve he met Dr. Abe Hurwitz (Peter Pan, the Magic Man and the father of Shari Lewis) who was organizing a junior magic club under the auspices of the New York Parks Department. This club took the name Future American Magical Entertainers (F.A.M.E.) and it was there he met Dr. Victor Sendax, Ken Krenzel and Al Goshman. At Age 15, Howie discovered Erdnase and began to specialize in pure sleight of hand. His circle widened and he started hanging out with John Scarne, Ed Balducci, Jean Hugard, Harlan Tarbell, Blackstone Sr., and Cardini. By the time he entered high school he had five individual acts. Spare time was spent at Al Flosso’s, Max Holden’s, Stuart Robson’s and Lou Tannen’s. Another mentor was New York orchestra leader and magician Richard Himber, creator of the Linking Finger-Ring trick. Schwarzman often pulled pranks at Himber’s urging, including impersonating mentalist Joseph Dunninger. Doing so, he frequently did a toss- out deck effect where the thought-of card was always the Four of Clubs. For years after, in Himber’s honor, Howie would always name the Four of Clubs when asked to name a card. In 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was quickly placed into a unit entertaining troops. At first he played tuba in the band but eventually was assigned to Special Services where he performed magic more often. Out of the Army in 1948, Howie began performing magic professionally at night clubs and other venues. In 1955 he married his wife Laura and moved to Baltimore several years later. In 1962, Howie began mentoring the teenaged Denny Haney, whom he booked to perform at the Society of American Magicians convention. Howie edited Cliff Green’s book, “Professional Card Magic,” which included some of his effects. More of his tricks appeared in Harry Lorayne books and Bobo’s Coin Magic. He became a magic dealer in 1976 and specialized in imported tricks, notably from European magicians like Lubor Fiedler. He also wrote a popular column, “I’ve Said It Before,” for Tannen’s Magic Manuscript Magazine, and in M-U-M. He has been a member of the Parent Assembly No. 1 of the Society of American Magicians for 45 years, and was named “Magician of the Year” in 2007. He was also a long-time attendee at FFFF, “Fechter’s Finger Flinging Frolic,” an invitation-only convention for close-up magicians held in upstate New York. In 2008, Schwarzman was named the recipient of a performing fellowship at the Magic Castle. When Schwarzman first began to lecture at magicians clubs in 1961, Dai Vernon said of him, “In the last few years, you have certainly taken your place among the top flight card men in New York ... I think I’m familiar with the work of almost everyone interested in card handling, both professional and amateur, in this country. I unhesitatingly assert you can hold your own in the fastest company.” A dozen years before, Vernon wrote that Schwarzman was “one of the younger and better magic performers.” Vernon also called Howie “very enthusiastic, very skillful, very original and adept.” Schwarzman retired in 1993, but continued to attend many major magic conventions and gave occasional lectures until recent years. He also had his pilot’s license, and owned several aircraft. He currently lives in Baltimore, Maryland in an assisted living facility. Over the course of his active life he befriended and sessioned with all of the top sleight of hand performers. His collection featured in this auction is saturated with books, lecture notes, pamphlets, photographs and other items, all personally autographed to Howie by Vernon, Garcia, Racherbaumer, Cardini, Lyons, Krenzel, Dusheck, Slydini, Andruzzi, Lorayne, Elmsley, and many, many others. It could almost be called the “Autographed to Howie collection.” The auction is also supplemented with other desirable equipment, and ephemera from some of the nation’s leading collectors. Our thanks to noted magician Steve Friedberg for consigning Howie’s collection with Haversat & Ewing Galleries. The proceeds will be used to establish a non-profit foundation that will provide educational scholarships to promising young magicians, a fitting tribute for someone like Howie who spent his entire life developing magic talent. • Eugene Burger (1939-2017)
1 Eugene Burger (1939-2017) Photo: Michael Caplan A Celebration of Life and Legacy by Lawrence Hass, Ph.D. August 19, 2017 (This obituary was written at the request of Eugene Burger’s Estate. A shortened version of it appeared in Genii: The International Conjurors’ Magazine, October 2017, pages 79-86.) “Be an example to the world, ever true and unwavering. Then return to the infinite.” —Lao Tsu, Tao Te Ching, 28 How can I say goodbye to my dear friend Eugene Burger? How can we say goodbye to him? Eugene was beloved by nearly every magician in the world, and the outpouring of love, appreciation, and sadness since his death in Chicago on August 8, 2017, has been astonishing. The magic world grieves because we have lost a giant in our field, a genuine master: a supremely gifted performer, writer, philosopher, and teacher of magic. But we have lost something more: an extremely rare soul who inspired us to join him in elevating the art of magic. 2 There are not enough words for this remarkable man—will never be enough words. Eugene is, as he always said about his beloved art, inexhaustible. Yet the news of his death has brought, from every corner of the world, testimonies, eulogies, songs of praise, cries of lamentation, performances in his honor, expressions of love, photos, videos, and remembrances. All of it widens our perspective on the man; it has been beautiful and deeply moving. Even so, I have been asked by Eugene’s executors to write his obituary, a statement of his history, and I am deeply honored to do so.

Adrian Smith, then current Dean of the Society of American Magicians. At the time, Harold as he was known to his friends, had the largest magic library in the world. Often Harold was a dinner guest at our house and as usual after our meal “the boys” would discuss magic and collecting. Harold’s plan for his books and ephemera was to donate it all to his alma mater, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As we all know that’s what happened to his collection. Ed on the other hand disagreed with Harold’s plan and said that when the time came for him to dissolve his library he wanted everything to be sold; so that other collectors could enjoy what he had amassed.

  • LISA MENNA a Superstition by Chloe Olewitz PHOTO by JACQUE
LISA MENNA a Superstition By Chloe Olewitz PHOTO BY JACQUE MENNA Lisa, age 17, performing for Muhammad Ali at the 1982 Desert Magic Seminar Lisa Menna was one of the last to compete at the Las Vegas Desert Magic Seminar’s open close- up session in 1982, when she was 17 years old. It was a long day, and she remembers how the checked-out audience had perked up at the sight of a young woman in a white, form-fitting, knit dress. Waiting in the wings before her set, Menna noticed a celebrity sitting in the front row that no one had called on yet. She decided to go for it, and walked straight toward him to ask, “Could you please come help me?” Whatever attention she had gotten for being a gender anomaly in the 20- person close-up competition was dwarfed by the fact that the girl had just picked Muhammad Ali. When he joined her on stage, Menna doubled down on her carefree clown character. “Hi! My name’s Lisa! What’s your name?” She had no idea that her feigned innocence would get such a big reaction. “My name’s Joe,” Ali responded. “Joe Frazier.” More laughter. “Gosh Joe, you sure have big hands,” Menna said. The room erupted. Menna was born in Connecticut in 1964. When she was four years old, her family relocated to St. Louis, where she encountered magical clown Steve “Ickle Pickle” Bender at her older brother’s birthday party. When she was seven, Menna received her first magic set as a gift from her mother, who during her own youth had mailed in 57 Popsicle wrappers collected over the course of a single summer in exchange for a set of multiplying billiard balls.

JANUARY 2012 U.S. $6 PIT H A R T L I N G THE MOST SUCCESSFUL GERMAN MAGICIAN IN HIS WEIGHT CLASS! BY RICHARD HATCH The Giersch Museum, on the south bank of the Main River in the heart of Frankfurt’s museum district, is a renovated three-story neo- classical villa built in 1910. Its primary mission, since opening as an art museum in September 2000, has been to showcase artists with a con- nection to the region but whose importance transcends the region’s boundaries. To carry out its mission, it generally stages two major exhibi- tions annually. The current exhibit focuses on the Italianate landscapes of Carl Morgenstern (1811–1893), one of the city’s most success- ful and renowned 19th-century painters. But recently the museum hosted the first of a planned series of performances showcasing another kind of artist: Frankfurt-based magi- cian Pit Hartling. The son of a hospital’s head doctor and the executive secretary to the CEO in charge of licensing of Disney products in Germany, Pit was born on January 25, 1976, in the village of Nieder-Erlenbach, now a section of Frankfurt. PIT Eight years later, Pit discovered an old magic set in his maternal great-aunt Emma’s basement. “There was no one particularly interested in magic in the family,” Pit recalls. “Why she had H A R T L I N G that old magic set is somewhat of a mystery.” The wooden props made fascinating playthings. This discovery was the start of an increasingly obsessive interest in conjuring.
