This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

  • Here's What Seemed Like a Three-Part Recipe for Losing an Indy 500: 1
0 22 Here’s what seemed like a three-part recipe for losing an Indy 500: 1. Evict from the lobby of a plush hotel a year-old March rear-engine racing car; 2. Hire at the last instant a semi-retired old gaffer to race it; 3. Man it with a slap-dash and inexperienced crew whose members include an insurance-claims adjuster, a part-time truck driver, and a fabricator whose specialties aren’t dumping fuel or swapping rubber but boring into the insides of turbochargers Every odds-maker and Indy 500 handicapper going would have spent two minutes examining this hodge-podge and declared it the 1987 500’s biggest long- shot. And rightly so, because in its first and only experience of practicing together, which was during Carburetion Day’s final tune-up, the antique racing car, doddering racing driver, and butter- fingered crew successfully engineered ridiculous pit stops slower than two-thirds of the rest of the field of 33. Once the 500 started, the jittery old racing driver began performing to everybody’s worst expectations. First he barely escaped involvement in a big accident on the first corner of the opening lap. Next he fell a full lap behind – the worst thing that could have happened. And then, on his very first pit stop, his inexperienced crew did OK. But the 47-year-old racing driver was struck down with another case of nerves and stalled his engine. And then, after lots of odd things – very, very odd things – had occurred in the 500’s remaining 450 miles, this gang of no-hopes and their doddering driver had conquered the odds and won the Indy 71st 500.

  • Simon Pagenaud's Epic Win at Indy Spotlights the Historic Link Between
Simon Pagenaud’s epic win at Indy spotlights the historic link between the race and the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Colorado Springs----America’s oldest auto race is the fabled Indianapolis 500, getting off and running in 1911 and won by Ray Harroun. The nation’s second-oldest is the fabled Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, which got its start on America’s Mountain in 1916, held to commemorate the building of a new road, which was won by Rea Lentz driving a Romano Eight in a time of just under 21 minutes. The two legendary races are historically and anecdotally linked through the performances of the champions and other drivers through the decades. French driver Simon Pagenaud’s epic triumph in the 103rd running of the Indy 500 on May 25 added another chapter to the fascinating bond between the two races. “This race chooses its winners,” Pagenaud said after holding off Alexander Rossi in a frantic finish. “Today, I was the chosen one.” Pagenaud is the latest Indy 500 champion who also gritted his teeth on the historic Pikes Peak Highway in the race to the summit of the 14,115-foot mountain near Colorado Springs. That list includes Bobby Unser, Mario A ndretti, Rick Mears, Parnelli Jones and A l Unser, each a winner at Indy and Pikes Peak over the years. Though Pagenaud did not win at Pikes Peak, his 2013 ride on the mountain remains notable nonetheless. Driving a highly-modified Honda Odyssey minivan, Pagenaud was a crowd favorite in his Pikes Peak debut, powering up the 12.42-mile course to a second-place finish in the Exhibition Class with a clocking of 12:54.325.

  • Wilbur Shaw Race Car Driver
WILBUR SHAW Wilbur Shaw was a friend of the Peverill family and was arguably the greatest racecar driver of the twentieth century. I will make the case. Begin with the track record. Shaw won the Indianapolis 500 in 1937, 1939, and in 1940. He was runner-up in 1938 when, if he had won, he would have been the only driver to win three, let alone four times, in a row. He was the first and one of three drivers ever to win successive Indy 500 events and the only driver to have an opportunity to win three times in a row when in 1941 he led for 152 laps when a defective wheel put him in the Turn One wall. His racetrack career was one of only a few to span both a pre and post-war experience. Let us digress briefly. Speculation abounds pertaining to Tiger Woods’ prospects for exceeding Jack Nicklaus’ eighteen major (“Grand Slam”) golf wins. Seldom mentioned are Nicklaus’ nineteen runner-up “Grand Slam” performances. To my view, these should be taken as a whole because together these demonstrate consistent achievement at the pinnacle of this profession. Similarly, Shaw ranks only slightly behind Al Unser, Sr. for the most first and second place finishes in Indy races: No. of 1st Or 2 nd Races Al Unser, Sr. 7 27 Wilbur Shaw 6 13 A. J. Foyt 5 35 Rick Mears 5 15 Bobby Unser 4 19 Tom Sneva 4 18 Mauri Rose 4 15 Shaw not only won races but also ranks among the top five lap leaders in Indy history: TOP FIVE LAP LEADERS NO LAPS LED LAPS RACES PER RACE 1.
