The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

ROGER PENSKE: Well, I think we won one of the biggest races that we've ever had to get Helio back in this car. As you know, we've stayed together as a team for many months. And we talked about this when it started and obviously stayed in contact as he went through the ordeal. And I just have to say that I'm proud to see him be able to walk out and be able to get in the No. 3 car. It's amazing what happens in your life, and certainly Helio has gone through a chapter I'm sure he wants to close this book, this chapter in the book. IMS Museum honoring Andretti's legendary career with exhibit March 6, 2019 – The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum will honor 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti and his illustrious racing career with the exhibit, “Mario Andretti: ICON,” presented by Shell V-Power NiTRO+, opening to the public Wednesday, May 1. The exhibit is part of a comprehensive 50th anniversary celebration of Andretti’s victory at the Indianapolis 500. Andretti led 116 laps and delivered a popular, long-awaited victory for colorful car owner Andy Andretti with 1969 Indy 500 Granatelli, despite having to race in a backup car, battling race-long winning Brawner Hawk engine overheating issues and being forced to run all 500 miles on the same right-rear Firestone tire. “Mario Andretti: ICON,” presented by Shell V-Power NiTRO+, will bring together many of the most significant cars in Andretti’s career at the IMS Museum – cars which also represent significant milestones in motorsports history given Andretti’s accomplishments. The featured exhibits of “Mario Andretti: ICON,” are a full representation of the Nazareth, Pennsylvania, resident’s diverse career. A sampling of this can’t-miss exhibit includes: • The John Player Special Lotus Type 79-4, from the 1978 Formula One World Championship run • The 1974 Vel’s Parnelli Jones team Formula One car • 1967 Dean Van Lines Brawner Hawk II Indy 500 pole-winner • 1967 Watson Leader Card Sprint car • The 1967 Daytona 500-winning car • A 1994 Lola T9400 from his “Arrivederci Mario” farewell season • The Horn Offenhauser Sprint car, named “Baby,” from Andretti’s first Sprint car race.

This year will mark the Firestone brand’s 67th Indy 500 victory. Firestone has more Indy 500 wins than all other tire manufacturers combined. CAN HINCH GO FROM THE POLE TO VICTORY LANE: James Hinchcliffe wrote the latest chapter of his comeback story when he scored the pole for the 100th Indianapolis 500 last weekend. History will be on his side this weekend as the Indy 500 pole has gone on to win the race 20 times. Forty-three times, the winner has come from the front row, the last time in 2010 with Dario Franchitti. Will Hinch covert his Verizon P1 Award into the Borg-Warner Trophy? Chris Jones/IMS Photo WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS MONTH: IT’S NOT WHERE YOU START…: The last four Indianapolis 500 winners have started outside the top 10, including Juan Pablo Montoya, who came from 15th to win in 2015. With depth throughout the 33-car field for the Indy 500, including former winners Montoya, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan starting from the fifth row or further back, can another star drive through the field to win the race? SECOND-GENERATION STARS HOPE TO ADD TO FAMILY LEGACY: The latest generation from two of open-wheel racing’s most familiar families comes to Indianapolis in hopes of adding to the family legacy. Marco Andretti—the grandson of 1969 winner Mario Andretti and son of Michael Andretti—has finished in the top three at Indy three times in his nine previous starts. He hopes to give his father’s team its fourth Indianapolis 500 win.

Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.
