WILL POWER Team Penske 180 2. HELIO CASTRONEVES Team Penske 135 3. JAMES HINCHCLIFFE Andretti Autosport 123 4. RYAN HUNTER-REAY Andretti Autosport 121 5. SIMON PAGENAUD Schmidt Hamilton Motorsports 118 WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: PENSKE SEEKS HISTORY: Team owner Roger Penske has won the Indianapolis 500 a record 15 times and brings three strong entries in 2012 with IZOD IndyCar Series championship leader Will Power, three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves and 2012 Indianapolis 500 polesitter Ryan Briscoe (right). Can the three drivers become the first team to lock out the podium and complete the Captain’s sweep? DIXON EYES SECOND WIN: Another former Indianapolis 500 winner has a shot at adding a second Baby Borg to his collection. 2008 winner Scott Dixon returns with the formidable Target Chip Ganassi Racing team. Dixon led the most laps in the 2011 race, but didn’t lead the lap that matters the most. Can the Kiwi score his second Indianapolis win? HINCH AND HUNTER-REAY ON HOT STREAKS: Andretti Autosport drivers and front-row starters James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay enter Indianapolis as two of the series’ strongest challengers to Team Penske’s dominance of the series. Hinchcliffe, who narrowly missed winning the pole, is the only driver to finish in the top six in each of the first four races of the season, while Hunter-Reay, who qualified on the front row for the first time in his career, has a pair of second-place finishes. Can either driver maintain his form and come away with another Indianapolis 500 win for Michael Andretti? A BRIDESMAID NO MORE: A driver from Panther Racing has finished second in the Indianapolis 500 the last four years with JR Hildebrand coming a few hundred yards from scoring the team’s first win last year. This year, Hildebrand returns to the team and is joined by 2011 front-row starter Oriol Servia through the team’s new partnership with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. Can either driver finally deliver Panther Racing’s first Indianapolis 500 win?.

  • The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500
The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. Baker Department of Geography School of Liberal Arts IUPUI We thank Terri Talbert-Hatch and Pete Hylton for their comments and support of Motorsports Studies. Please direct correspondence to Robert White ([email protected]), Professor of Sociology and Director of Motorsports Studies, or Andrew Baker ([email protected]), Lecturer, Department of Geography, School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 425 University Boulevard, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46202. 1 The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Abstract Over the course of its lengthy history, the popularity of open-wheeled automobile racing in the United States has waxed and waned. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.
