Nuremberg at a glance

Nuremberg is famous for its bratwurst, gingerbread and its “Christkindlesmarkt” Christmas Market. Albrecht Dürer and the Imperial Castle are also terms that are inseparably linked with the Franconian city. Almost 1.5 million people visit Nuremberg each year; one third comes from outside . Nuremberg is one of 14 cities in the north of which have joined together in a consortium of Franconian cities. Each of these towns is distinguished by special cultural, architectural and culinary features.

Location . The Franconian city of Nuremberg is located in northern Bavaria. . It is the second largest city in Bavaria (after Munich) and is one of the 15 largest in Germany. . “Franconian Switzerland”, a low mountain range with up to 600-meter-high peaks, and the city of Erlangen are located north of Nuremberg. The nearby holiday regions of the Steigerwald, Franconian Lakes Area, Romantic Franconia and Nürnberger Land offer a variety of activities and places of interest.

Travelling to Nuremberg . Nuremberg has a good infrastructure and is easy to reach with various means of transportation. . With an auto: The Autobahns A3, A6 and A9 lead directly to Nuremberg. . With a train: Nuremberg is a rail-traffic hub: Several high-speed ICE- and IC-connections with non-stop services to and from Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Bremen, Berlin and Vienna pass through Nuremberg. . With a bus: Nuremberg can be conveniently reached with long-distance buses, which service terminals in the city center (ZOB) and at the Nuremberg Airport. . With a plane: Nuremberg’s “Albrecht Dürer” Airport in the north of the city is easy to reach with national and international flights. . With a ship: Nuremberg is located on the waterways network and is an important stop for river cruises between the Danube and Rhine. . With a bicycle: The city is linked with the pan-European Burgenstraßen, Regnitz and Fünf- Flüsse Bicycle Trails and the long-distance Ostsee – Oberbayern Bicycle Trail.

Top Sights . The Nuremberg Zoo is one of the largest zoological parks in Europe. . The Imperial Castle, a symbol of Nuremberg, was once the residence of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. . The Albrecht Dürer House, the residence of the Nuremberg painter Albrecht Dürer, still exists and offers insight into the life of the artist. . The Church of Our Lady, a Gothic church on the Main Market Square, is one of three historically important churches in Nuremberg. . St. Lorenz’s Church is one of the landmarks of the city. Inside are found precious evidence of the skill of Nuremberg’s artists, including Veit Stoss’s Annunciation and Adam Kraft’s magnificent tabernacle. 1

. The late Romanesque St. Sebald’s Church with its Gothic towers and hall choir is not only special because of its architectural style. It is also home to St. Sebald’s tomb, an extraordinary shrine created by the Nuremberg sculptor Peter Vischer. . The Craftsmen’s Courtyard welcomes visitors with a medieval flair: In its tiny alleyways, shops in half-timbered houses offer Franconian delicacies and the work of a variety of artisans. . The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg is one of the most important cultural- historical museums in Germany. . The former Nazi Party Rally Grounds is the largest remaining monumental construction from the National Socialist era and today houses an important Documentation Centre. . The Memorium Nuremberg Trials contains an information and documentation center focusing on the trial of representatives of the National Socialist regime which took place 1945/1946 in Nuremberg. . In the heart of the Old Town is the Toy Museum, which, in 1,400-square-meters of space, exhibits an abundance of unusual objects from 600 years of toy history. . The oldest Train Museum in Germany is located in Nuremberg. As early as 1882, this collection of railway heritage was formed.
