Weiser’s Nathan McDaniel winds up to pitch against New Plymouth on Saturday at the Pilgrims’ field. McDaniel came in to relieve Jayden Mink, who pitched three strong innings. It was a chilly afternoon, but the Wolverines’ bats got hot and they won both games of a doubleheader to start the season. Weiser had 15 hits in the first game and 11 hits and 9 RBIs in the second game. Photo by Katie von Brethorst Weiser’s Westi Walker gets the out at first as she catches a throw in time to beat a Caldwell player. The Lady Wolverines traveled to Caldwell for a non-conference doubleheader last week. Weiser’s bats were working early and players got on base, but the offense sputtered and they were unable to get across homeplate for runs. The Cougars jumped on Weiser’s pitchers in both games to run up the score. The Lady Wolverines were competitive in the second game of the doubleheader and jumped out to a four-run lead. Reed steps down as WHS varsity girls basketball coach After 11 years as the head varsity girls basketball coach at Weiser High School, and more than 20 years as a coach in the girls basketball program, Nick Reed is stepping down from his position, the school said in a news release. A 1993 graduate of Weiser High School, Reed began his coach- ing career as an assistant at Weiser in 1996 under Tim Erhard. He had two separate stints leading sub-varsity programs before taking over the girls basketball program after Erhard’s retirement from coaching in advance of the 2008-2009 basketball season. “We are so thankful for coach Reed’s time, efforts, and dedica- tion to our girls basketball players over the past two decades,” WHS athletic director Tyler Grant said. “His passion and desire to succeed, as well as his devotion to his program, our school, and our community exemplify some of the many characteristics that make Weiser such a great place to live. He will be sorely missed in our athletic department.” Reed steps away with a varsity record of 135-125 at Weiser. His 11 seasons include three district championships, five state tournament appearances, and a third place finish in 2010. The Lady Wolverines were just one win away from going to state this year after a nice run at the SRV District tournament. An announcement for a ceremony at a home athletic event to recognize Reed for his service and accomplishments as coach Weiser High School varsity girls basketball coach Nick Reed celebrates with the team after winning will be made at a later date. the SRV District title in 2015-16 season and earning a trip to state.
