Educated Youth Should Go to the Rural Areas: A Tale of Education, Employment and Social Values* Yang You† Harvard University This draft: July 2018 Abstract I use a quasi-random urban-dweller allocation in rural areas during Mao’s Mass Rustication Movement to identify human capital externalities in education, employment, and social values. First, rural residents acquired an additional 0.1-0.2 years of education from a 1% increase in the density of sent-down youth measured by the number of sent-down youth in 1969 over the population size in 1982. Second, as economic outcomes, people educated during the rustication period suffered from less non-agricultural employment in 1990. Conversely, in 2000, they enjoyed increased hiring in all non-agricultural occupations and lower unemployment. Third, sent-down youth changed the social values of rural residents who reported higher levels of trust, enhanced subjective well-being, altered trust from traditional Chinese medicine to Western medicine, and shifted job attitudes from objective cognitive assessments to affective job satisfaction. To explore the mechanism, I document that sent-down youth served as rural teachers with two new county-level datasets. This is a preprint draft of a chapter that appeared in Jeremy Brown and Matthew Johnson, eds. Maoism at the Grassroots (Harvard University Press, 2015). Youth and the "Great Revolutionary Movement" of Scientific Experiment in 1960s-70s Rural China Sigrid Schmalzer1 During the 1960s and 1970s, millions of young Chinese people moved to the countryside to be tempered by the "three great revolutionary movements." Originating in a May 1963 quotation from Chairman Mao, this became a stock phrase in the Cultural Revolution. But what were these three movements? The first two are familiar enough. Class struggle: political study meetings, criticism/self-criticism sessions, violent and sometimes deadly assaults on people identified as "class enemies." The struggle for production: back-breaking labor that defined life for rural people and offered a profound, and often bitter, lesson for sentdown urbanites. But what of the third? Rarely discussed in secondary literature, the “great revolutionary movement” of scientific experiment was nonetheless a significant experience for millions of people in rural China, and especially educated youth. In some areas, as many as one-third of urban, sent-down youth participated in scientific experiment.2 Whether cultivating bacterial fertilizer in makeshift laboratories, observing insect behavior to develop more effective control technologies, or designing new agricultural machinery, youth provided key support to the state's goal of transforming agriculture, and participating in scientific experiment presented opportunities for 1 young people to pursue both intellectual and revolutionary dreams. The idea that science should be pitched to youth is common in modern societies, but the Chinese case stands out because of the degree to which science itself was characterized as youthful, and youth themselves understood as agents of revolutionary scientific transformation. -

From" Morning Sun" to" Though I Was Dead": The Image of Song Binbin in the "August Fifth Incident" Wei-li Wu, Taipei College of Maritime Technology, Taiwan The Asian Conference on Film & Documentary 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract This year is the fiftieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. On August 5, 1966, Bian Zhongyun, the deputy principal at the girls High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, was beaten to death by the students struggling against her. She was the first teacher killed in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution and her death had established the “violence” nature of the Cultural Revolution. After the Cultural Revolution, the reminiscences, papers, and comments related to the “August Fifth Incident” were gradually introduced, but with all blames pointing to the student leader of that school, Song Binbin – the one who had pinned a red band on Mao Zedong's arm. It was not until 2003 when the American director, Carma Hinton filmed the Morning Sun that Song Binbin broke her silence to defend herself. However, voices of attacks came hot on the heels of her defense. In 2006, in Though I Am Gone, a documentary filmed by the Chinese director Hu Jie, the responsibility was once again laid on Song Binbin through the use of images. Due to the differences in perception between the two sides, this paper subjects these two documentaries to textual analysis, supplementing it with relevant literature and other information, to objectively outline the two different images of Song Binbin in the “August Fifth Incident” as perceived by people and their justice. -

The Digital Revolution: Documentary- Making and Citizenship in Contemporary China Margherita Viviani Student number 20333142 BA, MA Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia 2002 This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Western Australia School of Social and Cultural Studies Discipline of Asian Studies 2012 ii Abstract This thesis examines the development of social-issue independent documentary films produced in China between 2004 and 2010. The analysis draws upon ethnographic research conducted in different Chinese cities during independent documentary film festivals and film workshops, through personal communication and interviews, and on material collected in libraries, bookstores, and, especially, online. I argue that documentary-making contributes to the creation of public spheres in which networks of production, distribution and consumption are integrated, and where different social and technological actors interact towards a common end. Independent documentary films in China are shot mainly by non-professionals. They generally depict normal people’s everyday lives, but with special attention to the ‘others’, that is, those who can be described as the ‘weaker’ or ‘disadvantaged’ social groups (ruoshi qunti) suffering more from the consequences rather than the benefits of China’s rapid industrialization and urbanization. In the last few years, independent documentaries in China began dealing with challenging topics such as governance in rural communities, the economic and social impacts of reform, and ‘social scandals’ detailing the underbelly of Chinese officialdom. This is all part and parcel of a more general growing sense of civil rights awareness and activity in many quarters. The social world of the documentaries is therefore an opportunity to examine, warts and all, a microcosm of ‘civil society’. -

Lee ©2011 Dáša Pejchar Mortensen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT DÁŠA PEJCHAR MORTENSEN: Cultural Revolution Narratives: Rethinking History through the Prism of Post-Mao Literature (Under the direction of Michael Tsin) Chinese “educated youth,” or zhiqing, who were sent to the countryside for re- education during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), began to re-frame their historical narratives of this tumultuous decade in the post-Mao period. This essay examines how two distinct genres of post-Mao literature, the “Literature of the Wounded (shanghen wenxue)” and “Nostalgic Literature (huaijiu wenxue),” reproduced an imaginary binary between individual memories of the Cultural Revolution and the officially-sanctioned history of this period, while a third genre of literature, the “Narration of the Absurd (huangdan xushi),” rejected a memory/history dichotomy. Instead of relying on a single narratorial voice, which silences the plurality of voices located in and out of the historical record, the Narration of the Absurd opened up radically new possibilities for narrating, in a non-linear fashion, a multiplicity of perspectives, memories, and uncertainties about the past. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter I.
