This will be followed celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Beckett by a 10 minute documentary film, featuring an International Foundation at the University performance’ interview with Billie Whitelaw. His recent edition of the journal Green Letters, ‘Performance and Ecology: What Can Theatre Do?’, will be published as a book by Routledge in 2018. He is currently ﬁnishing a new monograph, Interrogating the Human: Ecology,Theatre, and Theatricality. 5 Andrew Lennon is a PhD candidate at the University of Birmingham supported by the AHRC Midlands3Cities DTP. His research focuses on the mobilisation of documentary strategies in contemporary performance. He completed an undergraduate degree at Trinity College Dublin and studied at the Motley School of Design. He has worked in Ireland and 10 England as a lighting technician and designer. Anna McMullan is Professor of Theatre and Co-Director of the Beckett International Foundation at the University of Reading. She was Principal Investigator of the AHRC Staging Beckett project, a collaboration between the universities of Reading and Chester, and the Victoria and 15 Albert Museum, London, from 2012 to 2015. McMullan is author of Performing Embodiment in Samuel Beckett’s Drama (2010) and Theatre on Trial: The Later Drama of Samuel Beckett (1993), and co-editor of Reﬂections on Beckett (2009) with Steve Wilmer. Signature _________________________ iii Summary This thesis is the first sustained study of Samuel Beckett’s career-long engagement with confinement, examining both his use of institutions of coercive confinement as well as the closed spaces of his later prose and drama. Focussing on twenty-two case studies from Beckett’s critical, poetic, dramatic and prose writing, including the seven prose works in which institutions of confinement feature as key locales, it combines a historicist approach to institutional and performance space with the methodologies of genetic criticism (which studies an author’s manuscripts to investigate the geneses of his/her works) and spatial theory. Close readings of Beckett’s texts form the basis for a re-evaluation of his development as a writer and director. Chapter 1 analyses Beckett’s use of images of confinement, which allowed him to formulate key aesthetic problems in his critical monograph Proust, his posthumously published novel Dream of Fair to Middling Women and his short stories ‘Dante and the Lobster’ and ‘Fingal’. Chapters 2 and 3 examine the function of institutional space in Murphy and Watt, two novels in which an asylum setting is central to the narrative development, as well as to the development of Beckett’s own poetics.

LISA DWAN: BECKETT TRILOGY Friday, April 8 , 2016 The Broad Stage, Santa Monica WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE THE SHOW • Samuel Beckett (1906–1989) was an Irish avant-garde writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. Most famous for his play Waiting for Godot, he is widely considered one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. • Lisa Dwan’s Beckett Trilogy is composed of three of Beckett’s later works: “Not I,” “Footfalls,” and “Rockaby.” • The performance is 55 minutes of almost complete darkness, with several three-minute pauses that are in total blackout. All lights will be switched off, including emergency exit lights. In the event of an emergency, lights will be immediately switched back on. LISA DWAN Lisa Dwan (b. 1977) is an actor from rural Ireland. “Despite no formal acting training, she has burst upon the London theatre scene as a Beckett prodigy,” writes the New York Times. Dwan trained in ballet before turning her attention to acting. After a long-running role in the television series Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog, a recurring role on the Irish soap opera Fair City, and a few film roles, she moved to London in hopes of pursuing a serious acting career in the theatre. While working a day job at a London literary publicity agency in 2005, Dwan happened upon the script for Samuel Beckett’s “Not I.” Immediately struck by it (“I saw a transcript of how my mind works,” she told the New York Times), she auditioned for a production of “Not I” at London’s Battersea Arts Center.

10 December 2019 Open Letter to Westmeath County Council from People of Athlone and the World We refer to the new Church Street sculpture intended to “address Athlone town's urban context, the location of the artwork close to the River Shannon and the Old Rail Trail cycleway, as well as the heritage, memory and environment of the town.” As you know, the piece selected by Westmeath County Council is adapted from the Custom House in Dublin where it is claimed to represent a Shannon river deity.1 On behalf of hundreds of people from Athlone, people who have settled in Athlone, and Athlone’s national and international diaspora, and on behalf of concerned people nationally and the world over, we object to the intended statue. It represents misappropriation of Athlone’s and Ireland’s heritage, an affront to Mná na hÉireann and to people who value parity. The Custom House iconography is neo-classical and is not at all connected with Irish heritage. It claims a vacuous male god to represent our river while in Irish mythology the river is female. The name Shannon stems from Sínann (Sinann, Sionann, Sionnainn, Sinand, Sineng, etc.)2 and may derive from “Old Honoured One”. It is personified as a goddess – it is female, not male, and millennia older than the Custom House. The Metrical Dindshenchas (our native recount of the origins of place-names and traditions, committed to writing over a thousand years ago) relates how Sionann drowned at Connla’s well in her pursuit of wisdom. “Rivers in Ireland … were envisaged as divine figures to whom were attributed the gift of poetical inspiration, mystical wisdom and all-encompassing knowledge.”3 Ours is a rich and ancient mythology, one we should be proud of and take inspiration from.

It is a great honour and comes with the delivery of responsibilities to which EXCITING YEAR I am totally committed. I would like to acknowledge the work of my predecessor, Dr. Bryan McMahon, who served as Chair for the previous 11 years, and who completed FOR THE ABBEY his term on 29 January 2017. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks for the welcome and support I have received from the existing Board members, as well as the work they did in the interregnum to ensure that the Board met its governance requirements and supported the Theatre. An early duty involved the appointment of three further Board Members, and I was delighted that Pádraig Cusack, Jane Daly and Michael Wall were able to join the Board in the latter half of 2017. The new Co-Directors, Graham McLaren and Neil Murray took over the helm of the Abbey Theatre in late 2016. Under their leadership, the Theatre has seen an increase in the volume and variety of its activities, with many new co-productions and presentations in addition to the Abbey Theatre’s own productions on both the Abbey and Peacock stages.
