Duncan, Ph.D. James Swindal, Ph.D. Dean, McAnulty Graduate School of Chair, Department of Philosophy Liberal Arts Associate Professor of Philosophy ________________________________ Dr. James Swindal, Ph.D. Chair, Department of Philosophy iii Associate Professor of Philosophy ABSTRACT KIERKEGAARD‘S ETHICS OF REPETITION: A REEXAMINING OF THE ETHICAL IN THE 1843 AUTHORSHIP By Grant Julin August 2011 Dissertation supervised by Dr. Ronald Polansky, Ph.D. Conventional interpretations of Kierkegaard‘s ethical theory during his 1843 authorship fall into two general categories: In the first, Kierkegaard‘s understanding of the ethical is reducible to some duty bound, Kantian reading of Judge William in Either/Or II; in the second, Kierkegaard is depicted as an advocate of some form of Divine Command theory through the Abraham story in Fear and Trembling. Both interpretations not only lack textual and scholarly support, but also result in a faulty rendering of Kierkegaard‘s philosophical teachings, namely the idea that the ethical is a derivative ―stage‖ to be surpassed for the religious. Such a reading not only grossly misinterprets Kierkegaard‘s stages—for no ―stage‖ is surpassed, but only enhanced and enriched in its successor—but also overlooks the importance of the ethical in iv Kierkegaard‘s philosophy. The essence and foundation of Kierkegaard‘s teachings is the subject, i.e., the existing individual, and it is only when one transitions into the ethical that the subject is said to truly exist. From this perspective, the ethical is the foundation and core of Kierkegaard‘s philosophy. Unfortunately, the 1843 work that speaks to the question of becoming ethical—Repetition—has gone largely overlooked by scholars of Kierkegaard. While Repetition has gained popularity in recent years as the ―darling of deconstruction,‖ few scholars acknowledge the ethical importance of this work. In this dissertation, I argue that Repetition puts forth a very unique contribution to existential ethical theory and in particular to the problem of ethical subjectivity. I focus on three questions: what is Johannes view of faith, what is Anti-Climacus’ view of faith and how are these Kierkegaard’s conclusions? I argue that stemming from Johannes’ and Anti-Climacus’ points of view, Kierkegaard’s view of faith is the aligning of the self in a trusting relationship with the God-man. One outside of faith can perceive faith to be a paradox or find faith offensive; one must have faith to avoid offense and overcome the paradox. Chapter 1 focuses on the connection between Kierkegaard and his pseudonyms using his work The Point of View. In this chapter I map out Kierkegaard’s method of communication and the purpose for his use of pseudonyms. Chapter 2 focuses on Johannes’ view of faith in Fear and Trembling.

    INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS 30 Other Moral Theories: Subjectivism, Relativism, Emotivism, Intuitionism, etc. 1 Jan Franciszek Jacko Metaethics includes moral theories that contain assumptions which answer some metaphysical and epistemological questions about moral goods and values. The metaphysical questions (such as What are, and how do moral goods and values exist?) are about the nature and existence of moral goods and values. Epistemological questions (such as Can we know moral goods and values? If so, what are the sources of knowledge about them?) regard sources of knowledge about moral goods, values and criteria of moral evaluations.2 Assumptions of ethical subjectivism, relativism, decisionism, emotivism and intuitionism are exemplary answers to these questions. We call their answers “normative assumptions.” There are at least three good reasons to ask and answer such questions. First, without answering them, moral judgments remain ambiguous. For example, if I say, “Action X is wrong,” the judgement has several meanings. To specify its sense, I should clarify my normative assumptions. For example, I can assume metaphysical subjectivism (anti-realism) or realism in metaethics. According to the former assumption, my above judgment about X is not about reality; it is about my or someone’s opinion. In this case, the exact meaning of this judgement is: someone evaluates X as morally wrong. If I assume the counter-assumption of metaphysical realism (anti-subjectivism), I mean that it is true that X has the property of moral wrongness. Second, these assumptions are conductive to peculiar practices. To specify the practice, which follows from moral judgments, one has to determine some normative assumptions.

Allusion A brief, often implicit and indirect reference within a literary text to something outside the text, whether another text (e.g. the Bible, a myth, another literary work, a painting, or a piece of music) or any imaginary or historical person, place, or thing. Ambiguity When we are involved in interpretation—figuring out what different elements in a story “mean”—we are responding to a work’s ambiguity. This means that the work is open to several simultaneous interpretations. Language, especially when manipulated artistically, can communicate more than one meaning, encouraging our interpretations. Antagonist A character or a nonhuman force that opposes, or is in conflict with, the protagonist. Anticlimax An event or series of events usually at the end of a narrative that contrast with the tension building up before. Antihero A protagonist who is in one way or another the very opposite of a traditional hero. Instead of being courageous and determined, for instance, an antihero might be timid, hypersensitive, and indecisive to the point of paralysis. Antiheroes are especially common in modern literary works. Archetype A character, ritual, symbol, or plot pattern that recurs in the myth and literature of many cultures; examples include the scapegoat or trickster (character type), the rite of passage (ritual), and the quest or descent into the underworld (plot pattern).

    Dr. Hallett ELEMENTS OF FICTION – NARRATOR / NARRATIVE VOICE Fundamental Literary Terms that Indentify Components of Narratives “Fiction” is defined as any imaginative re-creation of life in prose narrative form. All fiction is a falsehood of sorts because it relates events that never actually happened to people (characters) who never existed, at least not in the manner portrayed in the stories. However, fiction writers aim at creating “legitimate untruths,” since they seek to demonstrate meaningful insights into the human condition. Therefore, fiction is “untrue” in the absolute sense, but true in the universal sense. Critical Thinking – analysis of any work of literature – requires a thorough investigation of the “who, where, when, what, why, etc.” of the work. Narrator / Narrative Voice Guiding Question: Who is telling the story? …What is the … Narrative Point of View is the perspective from which the events in the story are observed and recounted. To determine the point of view, identify who is telling the story, that is, the viewer through whose eyes the readers see the action (the narrator). Consider these aspects: A. Pronoun p-o-v: First (I, We)/Second (You)/Third Person narrator (He, She, It, They] B. Narrator’s degree of Omniscience [Full, Limited, Partial, None]* C. Narrator’s degree of Objectivity [Complete, None, Some (Editorial?), Ironic]* D. While a few early chapters are historically organized, my goal in the historical chapters is to trace a developmental progression of thought that introduces basic philosophical methods and frames issues that remain relevant today. Later chapters are topically organized. These include philosophy of science and philosophy of mind, areas where philosophy has shown dramatic recent progress. This text concludes with four chapters on ethics, broadly construed. I cover traditional theories of right action in the third of these. Students are first invited first to think about what is good for themselves and their relationships in a chapter of love and happiness. Next a few meta-ethical issues are considered; namely, whether they are moral truths and if so what makes them so.

  • IN SEARCH of AUTHENTICITY: from Kierkegaard to Camus 1
    In Search of Authenticity ‘This man has, I repeat, no place in a community whose basic principles he flouts without compunction…’. I tried to explain that it was because of the sun, but I was only too conscious that it sounded nonsensical… I explained that I didn’t believe in God… I told him that I wasn’t conscious of any ‘sin’; all I knew was that I’d been guilty of a criminal offence… In Camus’s The Outsider, Meursault’s struggle with authenticity leads to his being judged more than just a criminal. Other fictional heroes, or anti-heroes, have been created by philosophers to explore certain ideas or theories: like Meursault, Kierkegaard’s Abraham, Nietzsche’s Zarathustra and Sartre’s Mathieu all embody the contradictions of trying to live outside society’s accepted norms. Jacob Golomb’s In Search of Authenticity examines these characters in his analysis of the ethics of authenticity. His own passionate commitment to the quest for such an ideal is clearly evident in his writing. Golomb is particularly concerned that postmodernism devalues the subjectivity and pathos that inextricably link an individual’s search for authenticity. He argues that this search is now all the more pertinent and relevant when set against the general disillusionment characterizing the mood of the late twentieth century. In Search of Authenticity provides invaluable insight into the heroes and anti-heroes of the great Continental philosophers. Like them it marries philosophy and literature by looking at the rational model of ethics compared with the romantic ideal of authenticity. Consequently, it will prove vital reading for students of both philosophy and literature.
