Featuring iconic formal portraits alongside little-known pictures from private collections, this captivating book explores how each new development of the medium has been embraced to record royal life. It also considers the art of royal photography through the monarchy’s patronage of such major 20th-century photographers as Cecil Beaton and family members Lord Snowdon and Patrick Lichfield, and such contemporary photographers as Chris Jackson. Members of the Royal Family have always been keen photographers themselves. The Crown in Focus includes pictures from their own albums, and looks, too, at the publication of photographs by the royals, from Queen Alexandra to the Duchess of Cambridge, where the personal view has become the public image. Written by an expert curator from Historic Royal Palaces and published to coincide with a major new exhibition at Kensington Palace, the book is arranged into thematic chapters presenting 200 extraordinary royal images alongside extended captions that reveal the story behind each photograph. • A fascinating account of the British Royal Family’s relationship with photography and how it has been used to shape their public image • Presents 200 photographs from the past two centuries, including iconic formal portraits and rarely seen images from private collections • Accompanies a major new exhibition at Kensington Palace CLAUDIA ACOTT WILLIAMS is a Collections Curator at Historic Royal Palaces, specializing in royal, court and dress history from the 18th century to the present day. Since 2002 the estate, which occupies an ancient site, has been transformed into a remarkable plein-air museum, and the number of installations – most created in situ, especially for this location – grows every year. In this stunning new book, Robert Ivy and Alistair Hicks explore each artwork and structure in depth. Their insightful commentaries are accompanied by specially commissioned images by the acclaimed architectural photographer Alan Karchmer. Ivy’s introduction outlines the creation of the property by its owner, Patrick McKillen, and thereafter the book takes the form of a walk through the domaine, so that the reader is able to experience Château La Coste as a visitor would, from Tadao Ando’s minimalist concrete gate – an emphatic statement of modernity in the landscape – to Jean-Michel Wilmotte’s repurposed exhibition space, the Old Winestore Gallery. Throughout the pages, the reader is transported to idyllic Provence, to this enthralling, varied collection of art and architecture. • The first in-depth survey of the art and architecture at Château La Coste, a unique destination with site-specific installations • Includes works by such distinguished artists and architects as Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Frank Gehry, Kengo Kuma, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano, Sean Scully and Richard Serra • With forewords by Tadao Ando, JR and Ai Weiwei, who have all either created projects or exhibited at Château La Coste ROBERT IVY is CEO of the American Institute of Architects. His rise to prominence as a specifically American modernist was based largely on the visual influences that he encountered in 1912–15 in the vibrant cities of Paris, Berlin and Munich, which he then synthesized through a New England perspective. Solitary by nature, Hartley never lost his wanderlust, and throughout his life found inspiration in many other landscapes and cultures, including in southern France, Italy, Bermuda, New Mexico, Mexico and Canada. Marsden Hartley: Adventurer in the Arts offers a fresh appraisal of this pioneering modernist, whose work continues to be celebrated for its spirituality and experimentation. Rick Kinsel’s introduction provides an overview of the manifold ways in which Hartley’s peripatetic life shaped his artistic vision. Essays by William Low, Emily Schuchardt Navratil and Kinsel explore works and artefacts in the Marsden Hartley Memorial Collection of Bates College Museum of Art in Maine; Hartley’s love of the circus, a recurrent theme that reflected his desire for escape; and the painting Schiff, created in Berlin in 1915 with imagery from both Native American material culture and German folk art. The catalogue section, by Navratil, features over 100 paintings, drawings, photographs and postcards, arranged into six country- or state-themed chapters, with a concluding chapter on Hartley’s possessions, which – because he had no permanent home of his own – held extraordinary significance for him. • An authoritative study of Marsden Hartley’s lifelong passion for travel and its importance for the development of American modernism • With 215 illustrations of Hartley’s works and personal possessions, including full reproductions of a photograph album and a typescript • Accompanies an exhibition opening at Bates College Museum of Art, Maine, in October 2020, then travelling to New York in 2021 RICK KINSEL is President of the Vilcek Foundation, New York, where he oversees the curation, stewardship and exhibition of the foundation’s art collections. Sessler Foreword by Elizabeth Broun For the serious collector and connoisseur of American art of the 19th and 20th centuries, this illuminating series of essays will be invaluable. Twenty-eight chapters, each written by an acknowledged expert in their field, offer thought-provoking examinations of a wide variety of topics. The book is divided into three sections. Part I, ‘The Historical Overview’, explores subjects ranging from the Hudson River School to the art of the American West, American artists in Europe, American Impressionism, modernism, African American art, and the major artists John Sloan, Everett Shinn, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Arshile Gorky, John Graham, Willem de Kooning and Guy Pène du Bois. Part II deals with ‘Connoisseurship and the Collector’, and covers such topics as developing an instinct for quality; dealing in fine art; conservation; choosing wisely in making a collection; researching paintings you may be considering acquiring; the role of qualified art advisers; the anatomy of an auction; and legal issues when buying and selling art. Featured in these discussions are prominent collectors who have contributed so greatly to the American art scene over many years.
