WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME LETTER FROM THE president PLEASE JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE THOSE IN OUR LOCAL ART COMMUNITY MORE INFORMATION AT WWW.ARTSGLENALLEN.COM Dear Friends, The sta at The Cultural Arts Center continues to seek ways to bring the arts into your lives during the pandemic. We are working with Henrico County to create outdoor Sunday Fundays for families in October and will host a great concert on October 25 featuring the awesome Super Sugar Beats! What better way to chase the Pandemic Blues than with the upbeat sound of bubblegum music from the ‘60s and ‘70s? And on November 6, 7, and 8, the phenomenal Debra Wagoner will be on stage. All seating will be socially distant and masks are required in the theater as well as throughout the building. Our doors are open with art exhibits on the walls, wonderful wares in the gift shop, classes in progress, and performances coming up in the theater. We have policies in place to protect and comfort you as you enter our buildings. We do require masks… and encourage you to be creative with art-inspired masks. We will get through this together. But it is time to put the arts and their amazing healing powers into action. I hope to see you at The Center as soon as you are comfortable to visit. And nally, thank you to our wonderful patrons. You have been overly generous in supporting The Center with contributions and by donating your tickets and class registrations from last year back to The Center. The pianist, composer and arranger performed in the orchestras of Jan Garber, Raymond Scott and others; as well as led his own bands. In addition, he oversaw other musical endeavors, including serving as Musical Director at the Orpheum Theatre in Kansas City. Among his original compositions are Sunburst, Carmel By The Sea, and A Million And One Pine Trees. Tiff died September 23, 1998. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Don Tiff Collection was donated to the Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections by Mrs. Don Tiff and was delivered to the department by Don F. Downing. The collection focuses on Tiff'‟s extensive collection of sheet music and songbooks. Additional material include eight 8x10 photographs, several of which include Tiff; and two original scores by Tiff, Carmel By The Sea and A Million And One Pine Trees. Other miscellaneous items include three programs from the Orpheum Theatre from 1936, where Tiff acted as musical director; a song request card; and a newspaper clipping about Tiff. Alone or with a co-writer (especially her one-time husband Gerry Goffin), King has written such resounding hits as “The Loco-Motion,” “You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman”), “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Oh, No Not My Baby,” “Go Away Little Girl,” “Up on the Roof,” “One Fine Day,” “I’m Into Something Good,” “Take Good Care of My Baby,” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” among others. Considered alone, such a body of work would be enough to make King one of the great, original talents of rock and pop, but, for her, her ample 1960’s songwriting success was only a prelude. In 1971, King crafted one of the most enduring and influential albums of all time, a perfect showcase for her songwriting talents and performing abilities. Her album, “Tapestry,” was produced by Lou Adler and released on the Ode label. It contained the songs “I Feel the Earth Move,” “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Where You Lead,” and “You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman).” The album would go on to rank on the “Billboard” album chart for over 300 weeks. Four of its cuts would become major hits. It would win the Grammy that year for “Album of the Year” as well as Grammys for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance,” “Record of the Year” (for “It’s Too Late”) and “Song of the Year” (for “You’ve Got a Friend”).

The Monkees was my first. My parents will attest to the fact that I was pretty obsessed. Back in the day before the Internet was a big thing, we had the post. We made friends through the mail. We had little booklets that we made, wrote in, and passed on to the next person. I made my own Monkees Stationary and wrote letters on it! I wrote to my Monkees pals all the time! I had every episode recorded on VHS! I was a very big fan! Then, Davy came out with a book, They Made a Monkee Out of Me… We lived in Central Illinois, and it’s only about 2.5 hours to get to Chicago. Eventually, every- thing comes to Chicago. As it happens, The Monkees were coming to play a show, and better yet (as he was my favorite), because of his new book, Davy was doing a book signing before the show! Oh. My. God. My poor little obsessed heart was overwhelmed! And, bless my parents’ hearts for taking me for this experience (is it because of this that I now love cons?).

If instrumen- tal accompaniment was added, it was very much in the background so as not to detract from the voices. The term “doo-wop” itself derives from the ad-lib syllables used while singing the harmony parts. The origins of doo-wop are traceable to nineteenth-century barbershop singing and to the music of such flagship groups as the Ink Spots in the 1930s and the Orioles in the late 1940s. The Orioles were one of the first prominent doo-wop groups, demonstrating their sound in 1948 with the #1 hit “It’s Too Soon to Know.” From 1948 to 1954, they recorded over 120 sides, hitting the charts with memorable songs such as “Crying in the Chapel” (1953). In the mid-1950s The Castelles and The Penguins innovated new doo-wop styles, most famously up-tempo doo-wop. The Penguins’ “Earth Angel” (recorded in 1954) is an excel- lent example of the matured popular doo-wop sound. The song “Get a Job” by The Silhouettes (that hit #1 in 1958) is arguably the most successful doo-wop song of all time. This song inspired the early Motown release of The Miracles’ “Got a Job” in the same year.
