Festal Eucharist on

Easter Day

President:

The Right Reverend Dr of Dunwich

Sunday 4 April 2021 11.00 am

Welcome to

A warm welcome to the Cathedral for this Easter Day Sung Festal Eucharist as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. The service today is led by the , the Right Reverend Dr Mike Harrison.

At the start of today’s service, during the hymn, the Paschal Candle (from Latin Pascha for ‘Easter’) blessed at the Vigil and used at baptisms and special celebrations throughout the coming liturgical year, will be brought in.

The Paschal candle contains a twofold symbolism. First, it represents the pillar of fire that went before the Israelites during their flight from Egypt. Second, it represents Christ, the light of the world, risen from the tomb, whose Easter life we celebrate throughout the coming weeks of the year. Alleluia!

The service is sung by the Edmund Consort. We are grateful to our musicians for continuing to lead the music of our cathedral within current pandemic guidelines. Thanks go today to William Saunders who is overseeing our music at this time.

Mass setting:

The Gathering

After words of welcome, everyone stands and the Dean says

We meet in the name of the Father,  and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.

Alleluia! Christ is risen. All He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

The Edmund Consort sings

The Processional Hymn

During which the Paschal (Easter) Candle, blessed and illuminated at the Easter Vigil service, is borne through the Cathedral.

This joyful Eastertide, away with sin and sorrow. My love, the crucified, hath sprung to life this morrow:

Had Christ, who once was slain, ne’er burst his three-day prison, our faith had been in vain. But now hath Christ arisen, arisen, arisen, arisen.

My flesh in hope shall rest, and for a season slumber: till trump from east to west shall wake the dead in number:

3 Death’s flood hath lost its chill, since Jesus crossed the river: Lover of souls, from ill my passing soul deliver:

Words: George Ratcliffe Woodward, 1848-1934 Music: Melody from David’s Psalmen, Amsterdam, 1685 harmonised by Charles Wood, 1866-1926

All remain standing. The Paschal Candle is placed in its stand.

Bishop May the light of Christ, rising in glory, banish all darkness from our hearts and minds.

Deacon We have sometimes lived by the light of our own eyes, faithless and unbelieving: Christ, have mercy. All Christ, have mercy.

Deacon We often live for this world alone, and doubt our home in heaven: Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy.

The Absolution

Bishop May the God of love and power forgive you  and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.

6 ¶ The Liturgy of the Word

All sit as Terry Stark, Cathedral Warden, reads

The First Reading

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

Then Peter began to speak: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ – he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. Acts 10.34-43, NRSV

For the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

7 All remain seated as the Edmund Consort sings The Gradual Hymn

Thine be the glory, risen, conqu’ring Son, endless is the vict’ry thou o’er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay.

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.

Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing,

for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting:

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.

No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife; make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love;

bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above:

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.

Words: ‘A toi la gloire’, Edmond Louis Budry, 1854-1932 tr. Richard Birch Hoyle, 1875-1939 Music: Maccabæus, G F Handel, 1685-1759

The Edmund Consort sings the Alleluias.

The Gospel Reading

Deacon The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Deacon Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. All Glory to you, O Lord.

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.’ So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Mark 16.1-8, NRSV This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

Choir Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

The Profession of Faith

Bishop Brothers and sisters, as we celebrate the Lord’s resurrection, I ask you to join with me in professing the faith of the Church.

Bishop Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Bishop Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Bishop Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Deacon In joy and hope, let us pray to the Father.

10 All remain seated or kneel as Margaret Ellis leads the

Heavenly Father, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: grant that, as his death has recalled us to life, so his continual presence in us may raise us to eternal joy; through Christ our Lord. All Amen.

11 ¶ The Liturgy of the Sacrament

All stand as the Bishop leads The Peace

Bishop The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then they were glad when they saw the Lord. Alleluia!

Bishop The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you.

Deacon Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

If you have other members of your household with you, you may wish to share the peace with them now. If are alone, know Christ’s Peace to be with you now.

As the altar is prepared, the Edmund Consort sings

The Offertory Hymn

The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; the passover of gladness, the passover of God; from death to life eternal, from earth unto the sky, our Christ hath brought us over, with hymns of victory.

Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection-light; and listening to his accents, may hear, so calm and plain, his own ‘All hail’ and, hearing, may raise the victor strain.

12 Now let the heavens be joyful, and earth her song begin, the round world keep high triumph, and all that is therein; let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend, for Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end.

Words: St John of Damascus, c. 675-750, translated by James Mason Neale 1818- 1866 Music: German melody, 18th century

The Preparation of the Table

Everyone remains standing as the Bishop prays

Creator of all, you wash away our sins, you give us new birth by the Spirit, and redeem us in the death of Christ. As we celebrate the resurrection, renew your gift of life within us, in Jesus Christ our risen Lord. Amen.

13 The Eucharistic Prayer

The Bishop and Edmund Consort sing the Sursum Corda.

Bishop It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, almighty and eternal Father, and on this day of our redemption to celebrate with joyful hearts the memory of your wonderful works.

For by the mystery of his passion Jesus Christ, your risen Son, has conquered the powers of death and hell and restored in us the image of your glory.

He has placed us once more in paradise and opened to us the gate of life eternal.

And so, in the joy of this Passover, earth and heaven resound with gladness, while angels and archangels and the powers of all creation sing for ever the hymn of your glory:

14 Choir Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Holy, holy, holy Lord Dominus Deus sabaoth. God of hosts, Pleni sunt coeli et terra heaven and earth are full gloria tua. of thy glory: Hosanna in excelsis. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Benedictus qui venit Blessed is he that cometh in nomine Domini. in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

Bishop Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Deacon Jesus Christ is Lord. All Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.

You are the Saviour of the world.

15 Bishop And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy

to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, James, Edmund, and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. All Amen.

All sit or kneel as the consecrated bread and wine are raised in the sight of the people and the Sanctus bell is rung.

Silence is kept.

16 The Lord’s Prayer

Bishop Rejoicing in God’s new creation, we pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us, saying

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Bishop Jesus says, I am the bread of life, whoever eats this bread will live for ever. All Lord, our hearts hunger for you; give us this bread always.

Hear my prayer, O God, incline Thine ear! Thyself from my petition do not hide. Take heed to me! Hear how in prayer I mourn to Thee, Without Thee all is dark, I have no guide.

The enemy shouteth, the godless come fast! Iniquity, hatred, upon me they cast! The wicked oppress me, Ah where shall I fly? Perplexed and bewildered, O God, hear my cry!

My heart is sorely pained within my breast, my soul with deathly terror is oppressed, trembling and fearfulness upon me fall, with horror overwhelmed, Lord, hear me call!

O for the wings, for the wings of a dove! Far away, far away would I rove! In the wilderness build me a nest, and remain there for ever at rest.

Words: derived from Psalm 55 Music: Felix Mendelssohn, 1809-1847

Amen.
