Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s. -

The idea is not to replace government funded refugee sponsorship program, it is simply to augment it so that the collaborative resources can be leveraged to help more refugees given an average of 24 people were being forced to flee a minute worldwide as recently as 2015. United States and Canada have many similarities. Canada has a private sponsorship model that it augments with its government sponsorship model. If this approach has been working in Canada since the 1970s, it is also worth considering in the United States. One out of 100 humans are now displaced from their homes per a Pew Research Center publication as of October 2016. If all of these individuals created a country, it would be the world’s 24th biggest country. -

Kane 2013 i ABSTRACT This dissertation explores ways in which the graphic narrative (graphic novel) format for storytelling, known as sequential art, can be adapted for undergraduate-level introductory textbooks across disciplines. Currently, very few graphic textbooks exist, and many of them lack the academic rigor needed to give them credibility. My goal in this dissertation is to examine critically both the strengths and weaknesses of this art form and formulate a set of standards and procedures necessary for developing new graphic textbooks that are scholastically viable for use in college-level instruction across disciplines. To the ends of establishing these standards, I have developed a four-pronged information-gathering approach. First I read as much pre factum qualitative and quantitative data from books, articles, and Internet sources as possible in order to establish my base of inquiry. Second, I created a twelve-part dissertation blog (graphictextbooks.blogspot.com) where I was able to post my findings and establish my integrity for my research among potential interviewees. Third, I interviewed 16 professional graphic novel/graphic textbook publishers, editors, writers, artists, and scholars as well as college professors and librarians. Finally, I sent out an online survey consisting of a sample chapter of an existing graphic textbook to college professors and asked if the content of the source material was potentially effective for their own instruction in undergraduate teaching. -

It will not be like revolutions of the past. It will originate with the individual and with culture, and it will change the political structure only as its final act. It will not require violence to succeed, and it cannot be successfully resisted by violence. […] This is the revolution of the new generation. Charles A. Reich, The Greening of America (1970) During the late 1960s and early 1970s television produced, through a series of innovative and at times unusual shows, what M. Keith Booker terms a “cognitive estrangement” (Booker 2). These shows encouraged viewers to “look at the world in new and different ways, rather than merely act as passive consumers of the television signal” (2). Yet, despite its crucial impact, television cannot be seen as a significant force for social and cultural change at the time. As a matter of fact, it was rejected by the counterculture movement, notably by one of its gurus, Charles A. Reich. Television was envisioned by Reich as an instrument of social control which deeply influenced “public consciousness” (Reich 95). Nevertheless, the present study will try to show how television eventually impacted the counterculture movement. In order to substantiate my claim, I will, therefore, examine how certain television series and films played, to a certain extent, a part in the social upheavals as well as mirrored, through a number of visual echoes, the growing scepticism of the younger generation of the late sixties and early seventies. -
