If you are my age or older, you can probably remember when every Catholic parish had several priests. Growing up in my home parish of St. Paul the Apostle in Irvington, there were always four resident priests and weekend assistants. In the neighboring parish of St. Leo, there were five priests as well as weekend assistants. Prior to my arrival at St. Justin, there were three priests (Fr. Bill Nolan, Fr. Ben Amora and Fr. Al Ricciardelli) and three retired priests who helped on weekends (Fr. O’Leary, Fr. Cooper and Fr. Moran).

In our time, when fewer men are answering God’s call to serve as priests, this is no longer a reality. In July 2020, our parish and St. Clement Parish in Matawan became parishes with only one priest. Here at St. Justin Parish, we are fortunate to have Father Bob LaFerrera, a retired priest from the Newark Archdiocese helping us on weekends. Sadly, there are even less retired priests available to help in parishes.

In 2019, our Diocese did not have any ordinations to the priesthood. In 2020 and 2021 we only had one priest ordained each year. In 2021, we did not ordain anyone to the transitional diaconate; which means there will be no priestly ordinations in 2022. The number of ordinations each year does not match the number of deaths or retirements among priests. Sadly, Catholics in many parts of this country do not even have Mass every Sunday and all will not have available to them the priestly ministry and sacraments as conveniently and as readily as they are today, or as they were a generation ago.

In the future there will be less priests in parishes due to an aging presbyterate and the lack of men pursuing a vocation to the priesthood. Another important consideration that is often overlooked is that of clergy burn-out. Too many of our priests are already celebrating three or more Masses on a Sunday. This is both spiritually and liturgically unhealthy.

The Sunday schedule of Masses is not one which will please everyone. Some people have asked me about changing our schedule. Let me state upfront, it will not be possible to add any additional Masses other than what we have now (Saturday Vigil Mass and three Masses on Sunday).

So the question is not whether we add any Masses but do we change the time of our Mass schedule. At the present time we have the Saturday Vigil Mass at 5:00pm and Sunday Masses at 8:00am, 10:00am and 12 noon. I will not consider changing the time of the Saturday Vigil Mass and the Sunday morning Mass at 8:00am. Our weekday Masses are at 8:00am and St. Luke Parish has their first Mass at 7:00am and St. Joseph Parish has their first Mass at 7:30am. This gives people more options in a reasonable geographic area.

The only question is whether we have Sunday Masses at 8am, 10am and 12 noon or at 8am, 9:30am and 11:30am.

I am open to either schedule so I have decided to put the question to a vote. There are three ways you can voice your preference.

You can either fill out the form on our website, drop the form below in the collection hopper or at the parish office. Any changes would not be effective until January 2022. Please indicate your changes no later than Sunday, October 10, 2021.

Our lives drastically changed in March 2020 with the pandemic and the State of New Jersey going into shut down mode. Unfortunately, the doors of churches were closed until June 2020 when the Governor allowed us to celebrate public Mass once again, but with severe restrictions. Now that the 0514-pg. 5 restrictions have been lifted we are able to celebrate Mass as before. On the Feast of Corpus Christi June 2021, the Bishops of New Jersey voted to remove the dispensation for attending Mass due to the pandemic and now Catholics are encouraged to return to Mass and the gift of receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. However, I realize some parishioners, for various reasons, are still hesitant to attend Mass.

We are not out of the woods yet with the new strands of the virus, which again creates anxiety. I have noticed, while masks in the Church are optional throughout New Jersey, many parishioners are returning to the practice of wearing a mask at Mass. Bishop O’Connell has asked all priests, deacons and extraordinary ministers during this time of uncertainty to wear a mask when giving out Holy Communion. Please know that our Church is electrostatically cleaned weekly to kill any viruses.

I am thankful and grateful for your continued financial support during those challenging days to help us meet our weekly and monthly expenses. Many mail their contributions in and continue to do so. Thankfully, the parishioners of Saint Justin always come through.

Once again I am asking all parishioners, according to your means, to continue to support your parish during these challenging days to help us meet our expenses. At this time we will not resume taking up the collection at Mass. Here are some ways for you to help your parish:

x Place your offering in the receptacles at the doors as you enter or leave church. x Mail in your envelopes weekly/monthly. x Have your bank send us weekly/monthly check automatically from your checking account made out to Saint Justin Church with your envelope number on the check to get proper credit – at this time several individuals and families are doing this.

Thank you for giving the above some consideration to help support your parish financially, and know it is greatly appreciated!

Finally, thank you for your prayers and support during these difficult times. Please keep me and all priests in your prayers and know that I keep all the members of our parish family in mine.

In Christ,
