Brachiopods from the Mobarak Formation, North Iran
GeoArabia, 2011, v. 16, no. 3, p. 129-192 Gulf PetroLink, Bahrain Tournaisian (Mississippian) brachiopods from the Mobarak Formation, North Iran Maryamnaz Bahrammanesh, Lucia Angiolini, Anselmo Alessandro Antonelli, Babak Aghababalou and Maurizio Gaetani ABSTRACT Following detailed stratigraphic work on the Mississippian marlstone and bioclastic limestone of the Mobarak Formation of the Alborz Mountains in North Iran, forty-eight of the most important brachiopod taxa are here systematically described and illustrated. The ranges of the taxa are given along the Abrendan and Simeh Kuh stratigraphic sections, located north of Damgham. The examined brachiopod species date the base of the Mobarak Formation to the Tournaisian, in absence of age-diagnostic foraminifers. Change in brachiopod settling preferences indicates a shift from high energy, shallow-water settings with high nutrient supply in the lower part of the formation to quieter, soft, but not soppy substrates, with lower nutrient supply in the middle part of the Mobarak Formation. Brachiopod occurrence is instead scanty at its top. The palaeobiogeographic affinity of the Tournaisian brachiopods from North Iran indicates a closer relationship to North America, Western Europe and the Russian Platform than to cold-water Australian faunas, confirming the affinity of the other biota of the Alborz Mountains. This can be explained by the occurrence of warm surface-current gyres widely distributing brachiopod larvae across the Palaeotethys Ocean, where North Iran as other peri- Gondwanan blocks acted as staging-posts. INTRODUCTION The Mississippian Mobarak Formation of the Alborz Mountains (North Iran) has been recently revised by Brenckle et al. (2009) who focused mainly on its calcareous microfossil biota and refined its biostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy and paleogeography. -
Biodiversity Patterns Across the Late Paleozoic Ice Age

Kocsis ABSTRACT The Late Palaeozoic Ice Age (LPIA, Famennian to Wuchiapingian) witnessed two transitions between ice- and greenhouse conditions. These alternations led to drastic alterations in the marine system (e.g., sea-level, habitat size, sea-surface temperature) forcing faunal changes. To reassess the response of the global marine fauna, we ana- lyze diversity dynamics of brachiopod, bivalve, and gastropod taxa throughout the LPIA using data from the Paleobiology Database. Diversity dynamics were assessed regarding environmental affinities of these clades. Our analyses indicate that during the LPIA more taxa had an affinity towards siliciclastic than towards carbonate environ- ments. Deep-water and reefal habitats were more favored while grain size was less determining. In individual stages of the LPIA, the clades show rather constant affinities towards an environment. Those bivalves and brachiopods with an affinity differ in their habitat preferences, indicating that there might have been little competition among these two clades. Origination and extinction rates are similar during the main phase of the LPIA, whether environmental affinities are considered or not. This underlines that the LPIA marine fauna was well adapted and capable of reacting to changing environ- mental and climatic conditions. Since patterns of faunal change are similar in different environments, our study implies that the changes in faunal composition (e.g., diversity loss during the LPIA; strong increase of brachiopod diversity during the Permian) were influenced by the habitat to only a minor degree but most likely by yet unknown abiotic factors. -

Abstract.—A species of the genus Cyrtospirifer, collected from beds in the south-south-west of the Mount Morgan district, is described and named, and the age of the beds is determined as Upper Devonian. INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS. The species of Cyrtospirifer described in this paper was collected by Mr. J. H. Reid, near the boundary of portions 18 and 21, Parish of Calliungal, County of Raglan, Queensland. The specimens used are the first to have been collected and described from this locality, and indicate the age of the beds here, previously regarded as Lower Carboniferous, to be Upper Devonian. Lenina 39, Yakutsk, 677980, Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Russia; 3National Park Service-Geologic Resources Division, 1201 Eye Street, NW (Room 1146), Washington, D.C. 20005, Abstract—We describe a new genus and species of Middle Devonian (Givetian) brachiopod, Alaskothyris frosti n. gen., n. sp., found in Middle Devonian (Givetian) strata exposed near Nigtun Lake, Howard Pass 1:250,000 scale quadrangle, northwestern Alaska. The species occurs in a single monotaxic, coquinoid brachiopod accumulation within Noatak National Preserve. This rensselandiinid brachiopod is significant in that it represents only the fourth species of a Middle Devonian brachiopod ever described from the northwestern Alaska, an area with thick Devonian platform carbonate and siliciclastic-dominated strata successions. Despite the great areal extent of Devonian strata here, the area has had only limited paleontological study, and remains almost a terra incognita for Devonian fossils. The strata hosting the new brachiopod genus and species are part of the Arctic Alaska superterrane (Blodgett et al., 2002). Evaluation of the taxonomic diversity and character of the Devonian fauna found here is important in determining the paleogeographic origin of this superterrane and the paleobiogeography of the Bering Strait region separating northeast Russia and northwestern Alaska. -

Executive summary Geology and geomorphology are the rocks, fossils, minerals and landforms, and the natural processes which form and change them. The variety of these can be described as geodiversity. Geodiversity provides many economic, social and cultural benefits. Recent research effort into the value of nature (see De Groot 1992; Daily 1997; English Nature 2002; Gray 2004) suggests that these benefits may be considered under four main value classes: appreciation, knowledge, products and ecosystem/natural functions. -

DOI: 10.4202/app.2007.0066 Latest Famennian (UD−VI, “Strunian”) brachiopod fauna from Kowala (Kielce Region, Holy Cross Mountains, Poland) consists of eighteen species within 6 orders, eleven of them reported in open nomenclature. Characteristic taxa include: Schellwienella pauli, Aulacella interlineata, Sphenospira julii, Novaplatirostrum sauerlandense, Hadyrhyncha sp., Cleiothyridina struniensis. New morphological details of Schellwienella pauli, Sphenospira julii, and Aulacella inter− lineata are provided. The described latest Famennian brachiopod fauna is distinctly richer than that from underlying up− per Famennian deposits (11 species within 4 orders). Majority of species from Kowala seem to have been adapted to deep water settings and/or poor nutrient availability. The stratigraphic separation between Planovatirostrum in the UD−III to UD−V and Novaplatirostrum in the UD−VI observed in Sauerland and in Thuringia is valid also in the Holy Cross Moun− tains. This is the first comprehensive report of a relatively diversified latest Famennian brachiopod fauna from surface outcrops of Poland.
