More than just a great science-fiction adventure, A Deepness in the Sky is a universal drama of courage, self-discovery, and the redemptive A Deepness in the Sky of love. This book won the for good reason. It has everything you want from a scifi epic. The characters were very believable and very interesting. The villains were over the top, and worth while for the most part. The concepts featured in the book about the state of human civilization were extremely interesting, and the conclusion to the book was worth while. I read a fire upon the deep. It was a good book but the ending was unsatisfying. Although this book was set on a far smaller stage than a fire upon the deep, it came much closer to home when it spoke of the state of the human condition. I here that Verner Vinge is writing another book set in this Universe. The sequeal to a fire upon the deep. I will be very interested in reading it, but I am even more interested in reading about Pham Nuwen, and a sequal to A deepness in the sky. The only gripe that I had about this book was that it was a bit A Deepness in the Sky, and seemed to drag on at times. Other than that the book was excellent. Loryndalar Mar 19, For eight-thousand years humanity has been spreading out into space. Thanks to cold-sleep and interstellar ramjets, humans have colonized planets and founded new civilizations. Unfortunately, like their predecessors on Old Earth in the Dawn Age, these civilizations fall into decay, often ending in the near annihilation of life on their planets. Then slowly, the cycle A Deepness in the Sky itself. Pham Nuwen, one of the founders of the Qeng Ho traders, has a dream. Can the Qeng Ho become more that interstellar merchants? Can they save humanity from itself by intervening before a nuclear apocalypse ravages a planet or a solar system? One-hundred-sixty years after their fleet departs, the Queng Ho arrive in the system of the mysterious OnOff star and its sole planet Arachna. They discover an emerging technological civilization of spider-like creatures. The spiders are only the third intelligent alien species that humans have encountered. Another fleet, the Emergents, have also arrived. For the most part, their technology is less sophisticated than that of the Queng Ho, except in one critical area. The Emergents have a way to condition the minds of their slaves, making them useful tools. Vinge has created an exciting filled with memorable characters, both human and arachnid, with realistic heroes and villains in each species. Decades of espionage, subterfuge and tense action are played out against a backdrop of deep space as the author explores the social conflicts that arise from commerce, conquest, individual liberty, authoritarianism, and the desire to dominate and control the actions of others individually and collectively using computer technology. Well, so far. Unfortunately, there's at least one more book coming in this series, and it takes him a A Deepness in the Sky time to release them, so I'll be waiting a long time to pick that one up. This series has a lot going for it. I read this one first, then what's listed as 3 The Children of the Skywhich follows this book in time order, and then read 2 A Deepness in the Skywhich is set far before either of these. That was fine. Deepness can be read as a standalone book at any point, though just for some of the plot twists in Fire, I'd recommend not reading Deepness as the first book you read in this series. This is hard Sci Fi with a , and massive, far reaching scales of thought, time, and space, all wrapped around very human experiences of this amount of vastness. It's more of a prequel, than a sequel, A Deepness in the Sky hundreds or thousands years in the past its been awhile since I read the first book. And the story is good, really really good. The comparison between the trade society Queng Ho, and the Emergents, a totalitarian society bent on domination. I appreciate an author who knows where his boundary is. I suspect the character of Pham Trinli is based on the author. This character is old, and grew up in a very patriarchal society. Pham knows that his values are long passed, but also out of date and has trouble reconciliating them. As for the Spider Society, by setting the society on a star that goes "dead" for 30 A Deepness in the Sky bringing the entire world to go into hibernation is a bit of brilliance for the book - this means that the individual spiders have similar lifespans of the humans - that humans are on shift for a bit of time, than go into cold sleep while off shift. The author writes about the Spiders as people. Description are very minor, until the very end, when humans and Spiders meet A Deepness in the Sky the first time. This allowed readers to see the Spiders as people, rather than insects. Its a neat writing tool, and worked effectively for this book. As for the writing, the book manages to hit the sweet spot of technologically interesting, with interesting flawed characters. The end of the book came from left field, but, was hinted at throughout the story, if a reader could read between the lines. TheDivineOomba Aug 3, Better character development than the first novel. The story is a bit narrower in scope, so there's not quite the same sense of wonder the first one inspired in me, but it's very good nonetheless. Home Groups Talk More Zeitgeist. A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge | Audiobook |

The Qeng Ho and their rivals clash disastrously, leaving the Qeng Ho defeated and the remnants of both fleets under the sinister Tomas Nau and his even more sinister colleague Ritser Brughel. This is mainly told from the point of view of the young but dynastically senior Ezr Vinh. Nau's civilisation has developed a nasty type of mental enslavement and has various hi-tech security devices to aid A Deepness in the Sky. Meanwhile the Spiders' technology is developing fast, mostly under the guidance of Sherkaner Underhill and his family. The watching humans will need to use the resources available on the planet simply in order to get home; but how and when will they contact the Spiders? Vinge's future galaxy A Deepness in the Sky a big place, but only slower-than-light travel is allowed. A Deepness in the Sky get around this using ships with ramscoops and "cold sleep". Also this galaxy is an old place. The OnOff star and its planet must surely be artificial, constructed by some elder civilisation for reasons unknown. A "Deepness" in Spider culture is a secure place for hibernation during the Dark periods of their star's cycle; Underhill's biggest ambition is to find a way for his people to stay awake and active throughout the periods of Dark. I liked the Spiders a lot. In fact, too much. The humans A Deepness in the Sky this book seemed too alien to me - much important background was simply not given What is the name of Nau and Brughel's civilisation? The Qeng Ho call them Emergents, but that doesn't seem to be what they call themselves. Why are both Nau and Brughel "Podmasters" and what does that title mean? And the aliens are too human; Spiders are basically people with a few extra legs. Vinge did much better in A Fire upon the Deepwhich I read subsequently and enjoyed much more. You will by now have guessed that this was my least favourite of the Hugo nominees. While I found the political message congenial Qeng Ho free- market traders are morally superior to Nau and his fellow slave-owners; Underhill's constitutional monarchy is a nicer place than the neighbouring religious dictatorship it A Deepness in the Sky too heavy-handed. Nau and Brughel were just too evil to be believed. It turns out that a completely unexpected group of humans has been in secret communication with the Spiders for years and somehow escaped everyone's notice. Given all we had been led to believe about the sophistication of Nau's surveillance and mental control techniques, and the efforts made by Pham and Ezr to wrest control of the former and neutralise the latter, this had a real sense of "With a bound Jack was free" about it. Mind you, when I posted this view to rec. I went back and had another look, and agree that the secret communication itself is indeed flagged up to the attentive reader but I still think it's inconsistent with what we are led to believe about the surveillance techniques. However the Hugo voters rated it higher than I did and it won the award for Best Novel. This is the only one of the nominees to actually feature aliens, or spaceships, and basically it is much more than the A Deepness in the Sky Ruritanian environment of A Civil Campaign. I have found nothing but rave reviews of this book on the net, and am left wondering what I missed. Tell me what you think! I think it won only because of the uncompromising bluntness of its political propaganda, which I found rather disgusting. I didn't like the book at all. The politics were inconsistent as well as wrong. Both A Civil Campaign and would have been much more worthy winners. Though I think A Deepness in the Sky was also favoured by the voters because it was the only nominated book that actually had spaceships in it! Longyear, Enemy Mine Vonda N. McIntyre, George Mann ed.
