The (October, 2005) Journal Page 27 NE of the most important tasks of the Greyhound OAdoption Program is the promotion of greyhounds as pets. It is so important to take our dogs Kirsty O'Brien into the public so people can meet the dogs for themselves and experience the wonderful nature of the greyhound. Many people have misconceptions about the breed, and we spend a lot of time talking to people as they pat and cuddle our dogs, to dispel some of the GAP News commonly held myths about the breed. So many people are surprised to hear greyhounds in retirement do not require a lot of exercise, and are quite happy to have just a short daily walk. They imagine the greyhound is a highly-strung and hyperactive animal intent on chasing small pets around. It is very satisfying to be able to enlighten people about the placid nature of our breed, and paint them a picture of a loving docile animal that will happily lie quietly around the house and fit in with the busy lifestyle of normal families with other pets. In the past couple of months, GAP has attended quite a few promotions, and this has led to an increase of adoptions. The promotions have included the Ekka, Redland Spring Festival, and Fernvale Produce Expo. These promotions would not be possible if it was not for the friendly group of volunteers who turn up with their pet greyhounds. If you have any ideas for GAP promotions, please contact us on 0417 725 684 or email at [email protected].
