Mick The Miller The Killeigh greyhound who became world-famous 1. Mick The Miller was born on 29th June 1926 at Millbrook House, Killeigh. His owner was parish curate Fr Martin Brophy who had a great passion for greyhounds. 2. When Mick was born, he was the runt of the litter. Michael Greene, who worked for Fr Brophy, insisted on keeping Mick and hand-reared and trained him around Killeigh, up to track-racing age. 3. Mick was the first greyhound to win the English Derby twice in succession. Mick actually won a 3rd time but lost the re-run which had been called due to dogs fighting behind him. 4. Mick is one of that rare breed of sporting greats who outgrew their own sport and became famous in their own right. He was well known even by those who knew little about greyhounds. 5. Mick was so intelligent, that he knew he didn`t have to catch the hare. In a race, he would sit back, take stock of the situation and then make a burst in the last few yards, to pass the dogs beside him. 6. He has had a 240 page book written about him, The Legend Of Mick The Miller by Michael Tanner (published by Highdown in 2003). 7. Between March 19th and August 20th in 1930, Mick won an unprecedented 19 races in a row. This record was not broken until 1974. 8. Days after he passed away (on May 5th 1939), Mick was donated to the British Natural History Museum. He is still on display in the History Museum in Tring, Hertfordshire.

Despite my best efforts, I put down roots in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara, a town of 90,000, sits on a narrow spit of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains on California’s Central Coast. It’s just far enough from Los Angeles to make frequent trips to Southern California’s megalopolis impracticable, and its vineyards, beaches, and sky-high real estate prices have earned the city its reputation as the American Riviera. Nothing about the place, in other words, suggested graduate school life. But when I arrived on campus in 2011, I encountered an extraordinary community. For better or worse, during my first years of course work the history department graduate student offices served as a social nexus. Any time day or night at least one of the following people could be found there, either working hard or looking to be distracted.
