Diversidade, composição e distribuição espaço-temporal de Loricariidae (Actinopterygii: Siluriformes) na bacia hidrográfica do Alto rio Uruguai. Dissertação (Mestrado). Universidade Comunitária da Região de Chapecó, 2012. 52p. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a composição, diversidade e distribuição espaço-temporal da família Loricariidae na bacia hidrográfica do alto rio Uruguai. Foram realizadas 13 campanhas trimestrais de junho de 2007 a junho de 2010. As artes de pesca empregadas consistiram de redes de espera de altura e comprimento variando de acordo com os pontos. Durante o periodo amostrado foram coletados 1.501 individuos, pertencentes a duas subfamilias, seis genêros e 14 espécies. O genêro que apresentou a maior riqueza foi Hypostomus com seis espécies. No ponto UCX (rio Uruguai) foi registrado o maior valor de CPUE média com 84,6 ind./1000m2 de rede/dia. No rio Uruguai foi registrado os maiores valores CPUE media, com o ULH 6.3 Kg/1000m2 de rede/dia e UCX com 5.9 Kg/1000m2 de rede/dia. A maior riqueza foi observada no rio Uruguai (ULH) com 11 espécies. O ponto com o maior número de espécies constantes foi UCX (rio Uruguai) com quatro espécies. A maior diversidade (H’) e equitabilidade (J’) foram registrados em dois pontos no rio Uruguai: ULH (H’=0,82; J’=0,72) seguido por UP (H’=0,64; J’=0,56). Através da análise de agrupamento foi observada a formação de um grupo com maior similaridade contendo os pontos do rio Uruguai (URMD, URME, URC e UP) e os principais rios afluentes (RPF, RCH e RIR). A ordenação foi semelhante, para CPUE em individuos e biomassa, separando os rios de maior porte dos menores, com destaque para o ponto no rio Uruguai UCX, que apresentou composição distinta dos demais. Durante o período amostrado a maior riqueza média foi registrada no verão (2,51; dp= 1,83) seguido pelo outono (2,1; dp= 1,77). A maior abundância média foi registrada durante o outono com CPUE média de 54,4 ind. 1000m2 de rede/dia (dp= 57,5). A biomassa média dos Loricariidae foi maior no verão com 3,7 Kg/1000m2 de rede/dia (dp= 4371). A sazonalidade demosntrou exercer pouca influência na composição da familia Loricariidae. As variáveis abióticas análisadas não exerceram influência na composição das espécies. Através deste estudo foi possível conhecer composição e a distribuição da família Loricariidae ao longo da bacia hidrográfica do Alto rio Uruguai, bem como avaliar quais fatores influênciam nesta distribuição. Diversity, composition and spatial-temporal distribution of Loricariidae (Actinopterygii: Siluriformes) in the basin of the Upper Uruguay River. Dissertation (Master’s degree). Communitarian University of Chapecó, 2012, 52 p. The objectives of this study was to evaluate the composition, diversity and spatial-temporal distribution of the family Loricariidae in the basin of the upper Rio Uruguay. 13 quarterly campaigns were conducted from June 2007 to June 2010. The fishing gear used consisted of gillnets of varying height and length according to the points. During the period sampled were collected from 1501 individuals belonging to two subfamilies, six genera and 14 species. The genre with the highest wealth was Hypostomus with six species. In point UCX (Uruguay River) was recorded the highest CPUE average with 84.6 ind./1000m2 Network / day. In the Uruguay river was recorded the highest average CPUE, with ULH 6.3 Kg/1000m2 network / day and UCX with 5.9 Kg/1000m2 Network / day. The highest richness was found in the river Uruguay (ULH) with 11 species. The point with the largest number of species constant was UCX (Uruguay River) with four species. The highest diversity (H ') and evenness (J') were recorded at two points on the river Uruguay: ULH (H '= 0.82, J' = 0.72) followed by UP (H '= 0.64; J '= 0.56). Through cluster analysis, we observed the formation of a group with greater similarity containing the points of the Uruguay River (URMD, URME, URC and UP) and major tributaries (RPF, RCH and RIR). The ranking was similar for individuals in CPUE and biomass, separating the larger rivers of minors, especially the point on the river Uruguay UCX, which showed a distinct composition. During the sample period the highest average wealth was recorded in summer (2.51, SD = 1.83) followed by autumn (2.1, SD = 1.77). The highest average abundance was recorded during autumn with average CPUE of 54.4 ind. Network 1000m2 / day (SD = 57.5). The average biomass of Loricariidae was higher in summer with 3,7 Kg/1000m2 Network / day (SD = 4,3). Seasonality demosntrou exert little influence on the composition of the family Loricariidae. The abiotic variables analyzed had no influence on species composition. Through this study it was possible to know the composition and distribution of the family Loricariidae along the basin of the Upper Uruguay River, as well as evaluate which factors influence this distribution. ARMBRUSTER Loricariid catfishes have evolved several modifications of the digestive tract that • appear to fWIction as accessory respiratory organs or hydrostatic organs. Adapta­ tions include an enlarged stomach in Pterygoplichthys, Liposan:us, Glyptoperichthys, Hemiancistrus annectens, Hemiancistrus maracaiboensis, HyposWmus panamensis, and Lithoxus; a U-shaped diverticulum in Rhinelepis, Pseudorinelepis, Pogonopoma, and Po­ gonopomoides; and a ringlike diverticulum in Otocinclus. Scoloplacids, closely related to loricariids, have enlarged, clear, air-filled stomachs similar to that of Lithoxus. The ability to breathe air in Otocinclus was confirmed; the ability of Lithoxus and Scoloplax to breathe air is inferred from morphology. The diverticula of Pogonopomoides and Pogonopoma are similar to swim bladders and may be used as hydrostatic organs. The various modifications of the stomach probably represent characters that define monophyletic clades. The ovaries of Lithoxus were also examined and were sho~ to have very few (15--17) mature eggs that were large (1.6-2.2 mm) for the small size of the fish (38.6-41.4 mm SL). Armbruster1 Two new ancistrin genera and species are described from main channels and tributaries of the upper Orinoco River in Amazonas, Venezuela. Micracanthicus vandragti is black with white spots and distinguished by its small body-size, large gas-bladder capsules, and highly protrusible mandibles with short tooth cups and five to eight long teeth per tooth cup. The known range of Micracanthicus vandragti is restricted to the lower Ventuari River and portions of the Orinoco River near its rocky, anastomose confluence with the Ventuari River. Soromonichthys stearleyi is green with small yellow-gold spots on the head and thin vertical bars on the body and has long dentary and premaxillary tooth cups with 39–69 teeth per tooth cup. It is distinguished by its coloration and by its unique pattern of plate loss on the snout: plates absent from mesethmoid surface and anteriormost margin of snout. Soromonichthys stearleyi is known only from Soromoni Creek, a northern tributary of the upper Orinoco draining southern slopes of Mount Duida. Lefebvre Masters of Science Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Toronto 2014 Abstract The suckermouth armoured catfishes (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) are a diverse group of predominantly detritivorous fishes inhabiting rivers of South and Central America. Their distinct jaws are specialized for scraping a wide range of substrate. Though it is hypothesized that specialization of loricariid feeding morphology may have played a role in their diversification, little is known about the ecological and evolutionary processes involved. The present study quantifies variation in jaw functional traits and body morphology in a phylogenetic context. Morphological variation was compared to species’ relative position in assemblage isotope space (for both δ13C and δ15N) to test for correlations between diet and feeding morphology. Results show that although jaw functional traits are decoupled from body morphology, both are correlated with δ13C values. Partitioning of terrestrial and aquatic resources can be explained by both jaw functional traits and body morphology, however further partitioning of diet is only attributed to the former. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Nathan K. Armbruster*** Baryancistrus demantoides and Hemiancistrus subviridis are two new species of loricariids from southern Venezuela with an olive ground coloration and white to cream-colored or golden-yellow spots. Baryancistrus demantoides is known only from the upper río Orinoco drainage while H. subviridis is also known from the río Casiquiare drainage. In addition to its coloration, B. demantoides can be distinguished from all other ancistrins by having the dorsal and adipose fins connected by an expanded posterior section of the dorsal-fin membrane, golden-yellow spots confined to the anterior portion of the body, and greater than 30 teeth per jaw ramus. Hemiancistrus subviridis can be separated from all other ancistrins by coloration, lacking a connection between the dorsal and adipose fins and having less than 30 teeth per jaw raSmus. Baryancistrus demantoides e Hemiancistrus subviridis são duas espécies novas de loricariídeos do sul da Venezuela, de cor de fundo verde-oliva e manchas brancas a creme ou amarelo-douradas. Baryancistrus demantoides é conhecida somente da bacia do rio Orinoco superior, enquanto H. subviridis é também conhecida da baFcia do rio Casiquiare. Além da coloração, B. demantoides pode ser distinguido de todos os outros ancistríneos por ter as nadadeiras dorsal e adiposa conectadas por uma secção posterior expandida da membrana da nadadeira dorsal, manchas amarelo-douradas restritas à porção anterior do corpo, e mais de 30 dentes por ramo mandibular.

Resumen El proposito´ de este trabajo es investigar los procesos que originaron y mantienen la gran di- versidad de peces continentales neotropicales. Para abordar esta tematica´ se ha elegido estudiar a cuatro generos´ de la familia Loricariidae de la cuenca del Plata. En este territorio se encuentra la mayor variedad de ambientes acuaticos´ y la mayor cantidad de especies de peces de Argentina, presentando un gran numero´ de endemismos. Sin embargo, los procesos evolutivos causales de esta gran riqueza biologica´ son aun´ poco conocidos y son escasas las hipotesis´ que actualmente dan cuenta de ella. Con el objetivo de comprender el origen de la diversificacion´ de especies dentro de la cuenca del Plata, se han realizado una serie de estudios filogeneticos´ de numerosos individuos de cuatro generos´ de la familia Loricariidae, Hypostomus, Loricariichthys, Rineloricaria y Ancistrus. Las filogenias moleculares basadas en marcadores mitocondriales y nucleares, y sobre datos con- catenados, han sido establecidas para cada grupo. Se utilizaron los arboles´ filogeneticos´ obtenidos para realizar la calibracion´ molecular y la reconstruccion´ de las areas´ ancestrales de cada genero.´ A partir de estos datos y de la distribucion´ actual de las especies, se evaluo´ una hipotesis´ que propone como causa de la diversificacion´ una incursion´ marina en la cuenca del Plata ocurrida hace 15-5 Ma.

The present paper is an enumeration of the fishes so far recorded from the streams and lakes of South America, with a few preliminary remarks on the extent, peculiarity, and origin of the fauna an<l the division of the ueotropics into provinces. An attempt has been made to include those marine forms which have been found in the rivers beyond brackish water and to exclude those which probably enter fresh waters, bnt have not actually been found in any streams. Central American species are not enumerated. The aim being to present a synopsis of what has been accomplished rather than a list of the species which in our estimation are valid, all the doubtful species are enumerated and the synonyms of each species are given. All the names given to South American fishes prior to 1890 are therefore to be found here. We have endeavored to adopt and incorporate the results of the latest investigations, chiefly those of Giinther, Gill, Cope, Boulenger, Steindachner, and Eigenmann and Eigenmann. Since works of a re- visionary character on South American fishes are few, and many of the species have been recorded but once, many changes in the present list will doubtless become necessary. Ballen1 and Richard P. Vari2 The loricariid catfish genus Dolichancistrus is reviewed and four species recognized. Species of Dolichancistrus are distinguished from each other by the degree of development of the pectoral-fin spine, the form of the distal margin of the pelvic fin, the relative size and form of the cheek plates, the pattern of odontodes along the margin of the snout, the presence versus absence of a buccal papilla at the premaxillary symphysis, and the relative lengths of the anal- versus pelvic-spines. Dolichancistrus atratoensis is known from the río Atrato system and the río Cubarradó on the Pacific versant of Colombia; D. carnegiei occurs in the eastern río Magdalena basin in the departments of Boyacá and Santander, Colombia; D. cobrensis inhabits southern tributaries of the Lago Maracaibo basin in Colombia and Venezuela along with some highland rivers of the Cordillera de Mérida in Venezuela draining into the río Orinoco system; and D. fuesslii is known from the Andean piedmont portions of the río Meta basin in the western río Orinoco system. Pseudancistrus pediculatus is considered a junior synonym of Ancistrus fuesslii. Chaetostomus setosus previously assigned to Dolichancistrus, was found to lack features characteristic of its putative congeners and is rather more closely related to other members of Chaetostoma group. Consequently, the species is herein considered as incertae sedis within that group. Dolichancistrus is diagnosed, a key is provided to the members of the genus, and diagnoses and redescriptions are provided for all of the recognized species.
