Penguin Books India Pvt Ltd. Paperback. Condition: new. BRAND NEW, The Menagerie and Other Byomkesh Bakshi Mysteries, Saradindu Bandyopadhyay, Sreejata Guha, Byomkesh Bakshi's appeal as the self-styled inquisitor, a detective not by profession but by passion, has found him a dedicated following among generations of readers. The present collection of stories, all set in Calcutta of the fiies and sixties, brings together four mysteries that put the sleuth's remarkable mental agility to the ultimate test. In "The Menagerie" (adapted by master film-maker Satyajit Ray for his 1967 film "Chiriakhana") Byomkesh cracks a strange case involving broken motor parts, a seemingly natural death and the peculiar inhabitants of Golap Colony who seem capable of doing just about anything to safeguard the secrets of their tainted pasts. In "The Jewel Case", he investigates the mysterious disappearance of a priceless necklace, while in "The Will That Vanished" he solves a baling riddle to fulfil the last wish of a close friend. And in "The Quills of the Porcupine", the shrewd detective is in his element as he expertly foils the sinister plans of a ruthless opportunist. Sreejata Guha's translation captures brilliantly the thrill and ingenuity of Byomkesh's exploits just as it does Bandyopadhyay's remarkable portrayal of a city struggling to overcome its colonial past and come into its own. • Chapter 6. Re-Reading Select
Re-reading Select Sherlock Hohnes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 296 CHAPTER 6. RE-READING SELECT SHERLOCK HOLMES AND BYOMKESH BAKSHI STORIES: - Several Sherlock Holmes narratives other than A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band" and 'The Adventure of the Three Students", are also replete with Arthur Conan Doyle's anti-subaltern and Orientalist ideologies. Likewise, with the exception of "The Inquisitor", "The Gramophone Pin Mystery", "Where There's a Will" and "Picture hnperfecf, several other Byomkesh Bakshi nairatives assert their author's anti-imperial stance and exemplify specific areas in which the Bengali inquisitor challenges the hegemony of the Eurocentric detective stories, particularly the Sherlock Holmes canon. Kshetra Gupta observes, "Like Saradindu, his detective...[and detecdve stories are]...overwhelmingly Bengali though belonging to a later generation" (Gupta, Satyajiter 8). As demonstrated before, the Byomkesh Bakshi stories written before 1947 banish the colonisers from the Indian colony they themselves have so strenuously developed and modernised, and the remaining twenty three written after the Indian independence develop the former colony as an independent nation with an independent Bengali literature that has, even after being permeated by the colonial conventions, retained an Indianness and has developed itself as an alternative power against the British detective stories like those written by Doyle, Agatha Chiistie and G.K.Chesteiton. Re-reading Select Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 297 Doyle's support of the British colonial expansion and his advocacy of the domination of the Orientals are also present in "A Scandal in Bohemia", the third story of the Sherlock Holmes canon to be first published in the July 1891-edition of The Strand Magazine.

VEDA’S JOURNAL OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (JOELL) Vol.5 Issue 1 An International Peer Reviewed Journal 2018 http://www.joell.in RESEARCH ARTICLE POLICE-DETECTIVE RELATIONSHIP IN THE DETECTIVE STORIES OF SARADINDU BANDYOPADHYAY— A POSTCOLONIAL APPROACH Sunit Kumar Barui (Research Scholar,Seacom Skills University.) Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT As the generic nomenclature suggests, detection of the criminal constitutes the chief narrative interest in a detective fiction. In Saradindu Bandyopadhyay’s detective stories that palpably bear the impress of the classical detective fiction, crime and criminal are treated as an infection in the society that needs the healing touch of the private detective, Byomkesh Bakshi, for restoration of status quo. Prevention and investigation of crime and protection of the innocent are the official assignment of a law enforcing authority. The private investigator and an investigating police officer operate in the same direction, though their methodology, commitment and competency level differ significantly, prompting thereby a mutuality of clash and coalescence in their relationship. The present paper invokes the spirit of postcolonial criticism that encourages ambivalent mechanism in any decolonization agenda, to study the political import of police-private detective interaction in select detective stories of Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. Keywords: Detective, Postcolonial, Police, Crime, Ambivalent. CONTEMPORARY LITERARY REVIEW INDIA CLRI The journal that brings articulate writings for articulate readers. ISSN 2250-3366 eISSN 2394-6075 ANANDA DAS GUPTA Byomkesh Bakshi of Kolkata and the Sleuth on the Baker Street Abstract For 80 years, Byomkesh has been Bengal’s favourite literary character, his only competition coming from Satyajit Ray’s Feluda who made his debut in 1965. However, there is a crucial difference between the two. The Feluda stories were written for teenagers; whereas Saradindu Bandopadhyay wrote for adults. The mysteries that confront Byomkesh quite often hinge around lust, adultery, promiscuity, even incest. This paper analyses the annals of Byomkesh in the context of the works of the international masters of mature detective fiction, such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Raymond Chandler. Keywords: Byomkesh Bakshi, detective stories, Feluda stories, Satyajit Ray, Saradindu Bandopadhyay, Bengali literature, Indian English literature. Scholar Department of English Visva-Bharati Abstract The eminent Bengali litterateur Saradindu Bandyopadhyay is famous for his two extremely popular characters, notably Baroda, the bhutanweshi or the ghost-hunter and Byomkesh Bakshi, the satyanweshi or the truth-seeker. However, the frameworks within which these two figures operate are entirely different from each other. Whereas Byomkesh Bakshi, being the detective uses his scientific and logical reasoning faculty to search the truth and solve the case; Baroda encounters supernatural events in his life and proceeds to narrate his occult experiences which are devoid of any apparent rationality. Nevertheless, the author presents a unique glimpse when these two fictional characters confront each other attempting to establish the supremacy of their respective ideas and thinking processes. My paper entitled “When Detective seeks the Ghost: Exploring the Paranormal in Saradindu Bandyopadhyay’s Baroda and Byomkesh Stories” is a modest attempt to explore the intricate structure of both detective fictions and ghost stories of Saradindu Bandyopadhyay.

  • Chapters. Postcolonial Narratives: Byomkesh Bakshi. A. "The Inquisitor":
"The hiquisitof 242 CHAPTERS. POSTCOLONIAL NARRATIVES: BYOMKESH BAKSHI. A. "THE INQUISITOR": - As far as the conversations between Byomkesh Bakshi and his associate and litterateur Ajit Bandyopadhyay are concerned, 'The Inquisitor" (1933), originally published as "Satyanweshi" in Bengali, appears to be the first narrative of the Byomkesh Bakshi canon, through chronologically "Father Kanta", which Sreejata Guha translates as "The Gramophone Pin Mystery" in Picture Imperfect and Other Byomkesh Bakshi Mysteries. was the first story to be written and published in 1932. "Father Kanta" was followed by "Shiraonto Heera" (1932) before "Satyanweshi" was published. It is in 'The hiquisitof that Byomkesh Bakshi and Ajit Bandyopadhyay meet for the first time at a Calcutta boarding house in the locality of Chinabazar (Sen 7). This can be compared to the first introduction of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson to one another in A Study in Scarlet. The period of publication of the first Bakshi story is significant because the 1930s was the decade of intense armed nationalist movement in Bengal and Punjab (Chandra, et al., 188). hi "The hiquisitof Saradindu Bandyopadhyay has identifiably incorporated elements of anti-colonial resistance by depicting the detective and the narrator of his adventures as typical Bengali characters who reveal their distinctively Indian identity in their hybridity and in their actions as distinct from the European fictional detectives like Holmes and Hercule Poirot "The Inquisitof 243 who are pronouncedly Eurocentric and exhibit imperial ideology in their characterisation. 1925 - the time earmarked as the year in which Ajit Bandyopadhyay first meets Bakshi - denotes a cmcial phase in the stmggle for independence in southern Bengal in wake of violent inter-racial killings which reached their nadir in Calcutta riots in 1926 (Chandra, et al, 1960).
